Warriors-Timberwolves Preview

The Minnesota Timberwolves nearly stole a game from one of the NBA's best teams earlier in the week, but once again fell apart down the stretch.

They'll look to come out with a full 48-minute effort against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday night in a bid to avoid a third straight loss at home.

Minnesota led by as much as 21 in Wednesday night's 113-109 loss to 13-2 San Antonio, but allowed a season-worst 35 points in the fourth quarter and went 1 for 5 from the field in overtime to lose for the fifth time in six games.

Despite its recent slide, Timberwolves coach Kurt Rambis remains confident in his team's ability to learn from its mistakes.

"It's all part of it," Rambis said. "It's being able to be in those situation multiple times over many years. ... Guys just didn't have the poise and confidence to be able to make the right decisions at the right times in crucial junctures of the ballgame."

Kevin Love, who is averaging 18.9 points and an NBA-best 14.5 rebounds, scored a season-high 32 and pulled down 22 boards against the Spurs and has recorded four consecutive double-doubles versus the Warriors.

Darko Milicic is averaging 22.0 points over his previous three games after scoring 6.1 in his first 13, and knows Minnesota (4-12) needs to come out more focused going forward.

"The few games that we lost, it kind of got in our heads," Milicic said. "We're thinking too much. We're just not enjoying playing basketball in the fourth quarter. It's kind of like we're scared to win. I don't know why. We're up 20, just keep playing."

The Warriors (7-9) received some good news Friday as David Lee, who is averaging 14.3 points and a team-best 11.3 rebounds, was cleared to return after two elbow operations. He is considered a game-time decision versus Minnesota.

Lee, who has averaged 12.3 points over 10 games against the Timberwolves, suffered a lacerated elbow against the New York Knicks on Nov. 10, and has missed the previous eight games, over which Golden State has gone 1-7.

"We'll look forward to seeing him and that happy face and the personality he brings to this team," Warriors coach Keith Smart said before Friday night's 116-111 loss to Memphis. "The good players figure out a way to do something in the little bit of time until they know their bodies are catching up with what their minds want to do."

Andris Biedrins recorded season highs of 28 points and 21 rebounds as Golden State fell to 2-7 on the road, where it is averaging 97.1 points compared to 107.1 at home.

"We had a real good opportunity to win this game, and we just had a couple of mental mistakes that we shouldn't do," Biedrins said.

Monta Ellis leads the team with 24.9 points per game but has been held to 15.6 against the Timberwolves over his career.

Golden State has allowed 115.0 points per game over its season-worst five-game losing streak.

The Warriors have won five of six at Minnesota.

MINNEAPOLIS(AP) On the list of big signings over this blockbuster NBA free agent summer, Dorell Wright landing in Golden State barely even registered.

Everyone is starting to take notice now.

Wright scored a career-high 30 points and set a franchise record with nine 3-pointers to lead Golden State to a 104-94 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Saturday night, snapping the Warriors' five-game losing streak.

"It's been 10 times better than what I thought it would be," said Wright, who had averaged 6.3 points a game in his first six seasons with Miami. "I'm enjoying myself. We've struggled the past few games, but I think we're going to get back on the right track when we get everybody healthy."

Monta Ellis had 26 points, 10 assists and seven steals in 48 minutes and David Lee returned from an eight-game absence for the Warriors, who won for just the second time since Lee went down with a staph infection in his left elbow on Nov. 10.

Kevin Love had 21 points and 22 rebounds for the Timberwolves, his fourth 20-20 game of the season. The Timberwolves turned the ball over 22 times, leading to 32 Golden State points and negating a 55-32 advantage in rebounds.

Michael Beasley had 28 points and nine rebounds for the Wolves, who have lost four in a row.

"I was disappointed with our focus and effort," Wolves coach Kurt Rambis said. "For the first time all season long, I don't think our guys were there."

Wright has flourished with starter's minutes with Golden State. He never averaged more than 7.9 points a game with the Heat, but entered the night scoring 14.6 for the Warriors.

Wright hit four 3-pointers during a three-and-a-half minute-stretch of the third quarter to help the Warriors take control. With Ellis and Steph Curry breaking the Wolves defense down with dribble penetration, Beasley continued to leave him to help other defenders. Wright just kept burying open jumper after open jumper.

He only missed three of his 12 3-point attempts to break Jason Richardson's team record of eight, and the Warriors held an opponent under 100 points for the first time since a win over Detroit on Nov. 15.

His final 3 of the barrage gave Golden State a 76-64 lead.

"He's been doing that all season," Ellis said. "We've just got to continue to get him the ball. We had the faith in him to knock it down, he had the faith to knock it down."

It wasn't just his shot-making that helped the Warriors on Saturday night. The Wolves pulled within eight with seven minutes to play and Ellis was furious after a foul call on the defensive end. The star guard was throwing his hands up in frustration, but Wright grabbed him and calmed him down before he could draw a technical foul for demonstration that would have put the Wolves at the line again.

After a defensive stop, Lee scored on a putback and Ellis drilled a jumper to push the lead back to 12, and the Wolves never threatened after that.

The Warriors (8-9) improved to 7-2 with Lee in the lineup.

"First of all, I know we can get some wins and beat some teams," Lee said. "I told you I wanted to be judged on wins and losses and so far that's going pretty good when I'm in there. I just need to find a way to stay healthy and keep helping our teams."

It was a big step back for the Timberwolves, who had been playing pretty well lately. They took the San Antonio Spurs into overtime on Wednesday and played Atlanta, Charlotte and Oklahoma City tough on the road in the last two weeks. But the losing may be starting to take a toll on the youngest team in the league.

"You could see that blank look on their face for the majority of the ballgame," Rambis said.

Love, the NBA's leading rebounder, outdid the Warriors all by himself in the first half, 14-13. He was so dominant on the glass that Golden State coach Keith Smart was forced to keep Andris Biedrins in the game despite his foul trouble. He grabbed 11 of his team's 13 rebounds, but picked up his fourth foul late in the first half.

Love didn't have as many opportunities for boards in the second half, with Wright hitting every shot he took.

"He just needed a shot," said Beasley, who played with Wright for the previous two seasons in Miami. "He just needed some minutes. I practiced with him for two years and I've seen it in him."

NOTES: Love is the first player since Kevin Willis in 1991 to record four 20-20 games in one month. ... Lee finished with 10 points and six rebounds in 43 minutes. ... THE FACTS: The Golden State Warriors shot better than 50 percent from the floor and made 12-of-18 3-pointers in their 104-94 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves Saturday night. Monta Ellis had 26 points, 10 assists, seven steals, four rebounds and shot 50 percent from the floor.

THE STAT: Golden State came into the game second in the league in steals (behind Memphis). In this game they forced 21 Minnesota turnovers and recorded 16 steals (compared to four for Minnesota). Ellis had seven of his team's 16 steals while David Lee and Stephen Curry had three each.

TURNING POINT: The third quarter. After trailing 51-48 at the half, Golden State dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Wolves 36-17 on nearly 60 percent shooting. Minnesota made a run in the fourth quarter but never got closer than eight points.

HOT: Dorell Wright scored a career high 30 points and was 9-for-12 from beyond the arc, including a perfect 5-for-5 in the decisive third quarter. His nine made 3-pointers set a franchise record.

NOT: Minnesota tallied 21 turnovers which led to 32 points for the Warriors. Every Wolves player had at least one turnover except Kevin Love.

NOTABLE: Love recorded his fourth 20 point-20 rebound game (21 points, 22 rebounds) this month. The last player to record four 20-20 games in a month was Kevin Willis in Nov 1991.
