Bucks-Pistons Preview

The Milwaukee Bucks have been one of the top defensive teams in the NBA this season, but putting the ball in the basket continues to be an issue.

The Detroit Pistons are hoping a return home can help them solve a host of problems.

The Bucks look to avoid their first five-game losing streak since 2008-09 when they open their season series with the Pistons on Friday night.

While Milwaukee (5-9) is limiting opponents to a league-low 90.5 points and 42.8 percent shooting per game, it is scoring an NBA-worst 90.6 points on 40.9 percent from the field.

Coach Scott Skiles wasn't pleased with his team's effort on either end during an 83-81 loss at Cleveland on Wednesday. The Bucks shot 37.8 percent (31 of 82) overall and were outscored 49-37 after halftime - 31-24 in the third quarter.

"We were a little bit soft on both ends," said Skiles, whose team's last five-game skid was March 18-28, 2009. "They got back in it. We have to assume just because we're up, we're not going to blow them out. When plays need to be made and when we really need to execute, we're just kind of milling around and not being real professional about it.

"As a result, we're 5-9 and that's one of the main reasons why."

Detroit is 5-10, due in large part to its poor play in the third quarter. The Pistons are shooting a league-worst 38.9 percent during that period and averaging 21.1 points.

Leading by three at halftime, Detroit was outscored 33-18 in the third during a 105-84 loss at Memphis on Wednesday. Pistons opponents are shooting 49.7 percent in that quarter.

"I've got to do a better job of getting us more prepared going into that third period," coach John Kuester told the team's official website. "We had that edge going into the Dallas game (an 88-84 loss Tuesday). I thought we competed for four quarters. We didn't compete for four quarters tonight."

Detroit, which has dropped four of five, will try for a complete effort Friday as it opens a stretch of four of six at home.

Milwaukee, loser of three road games by four points or fewer, won 91-85 in its last visit to Auburn Hills on Feb. 19. Despite shooting 38.3 percent, the Bucks earned a split of the four-game season series behind a team-high 19 points from John Salmons, who was making his Milwaukee debut.

Andrew Bogut had 12 points, 12 rebounds and five blocks while former Piston Carlos Delfino had 16 points and six assists in the matchup, but both will likely be unavailable Friday. Bogut missed Wednesday's contest with back spasms while Delfino has been sidelined the last seven games with a neck strain.

Bucks point guard Brandon Jennings will try to get back on track after shooting 25.5 percent (12 of 47) in the last three contests and having Mo Williams hit the winning shot over him Wednesday. Jennings was 7 for 33 from the floor in two games at Detroit last season, going 1 for 13 on Feb. 19.

Pistons leading scorer Rodney Stuckey averaged 15.8 points and 7.3 assists versus Milwaukee in 2009-10.

DETROIT(AP) Almost everybody was hitting shots for the Detroit Pistons and almost no one was hitting them for the Milwaukee Bucks.

Rodney Stuckey had 18 points and seven assists, Richard Hamilton contributed 15 points and nine assists and the Pistons beat the Bucks 103-89 on Friday night.

Charlie Villanueva added 15 points and eight rebounds for Detroit, which had seven players score in double figures. The Pistons shot 56 percent from the field.

"This was probably one of our funnest games of the season. I think everybody was into it, everybody shared the ball," Hamilton said. "Everybody was making the extra pass and things like that. When we do that, the game is fun for everybody."

Tayshaun Prince had 14 points, Will Bynum a season-high 13, Ben Gordon 11 and Jason Maxiell 10.

Brandon Jennings had 25 points and six assists for Milwaukee, which lost its fifth straight.

The Bucks only shot 38.6 percent, missing several layups and open shots throughout the game.

"We had whatever we wanted tonight, we just had to execute," Jennings said. "... The main thing is we need to put the ball in the basket."

He was also taxed by guarding point guards Stuckey and Bynum, who both took Jennings into the post and ran him into screens.

"I was trying to establish (posting up) early. When the game started, I got down there and got some assists," Stuckey said. "Guarding other point guards, always coming off pick-and-rolls, you get tired. You keep going with it. Jennings is a great player and fortunately, we won tonight."

Detroit capitalized on the absence of Andrew Bogut, who missed his second game because of a sore back.

"Bogut is an All-Star type of player," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "Not having him allowed our availability to get to the basket. He's an outstanding basketball player."

The Bucks, who also got 14 points and 11 rebounds from Ersan Ilyasova, have struggled offensively for much of the season but had played well defensively. That wasn't case Friday night.

"We weren't sharp ... right from the beginning," Milwaukee coach Scott Skiles said. "I could see we were a couple of steps slow."

Jennings' driving lay-in cut the Bucks' deficit to nine points, 73-64, with 46 seconds left in the third. But Hamilton's jumper with 32 seconds left pushed Detroit's advantage back into double digits.

Detroit led by as much as 23 in the fourth quarter.

Drew Gooden's jumper with 10:43 left in the third pulled Milwaukee to 55-50. But Maxiell's reverse layup, Prince's jumper, a floater by Hamilton and a scoop shot by Ben Wallace gave the Pistons a 63-50 advantage with 7:51 remaining in the period.

THE FACTS: The Detroit Pistons had seven players in double figures as they romped to a 103-89 victory over the Milwaukee Bucks Friday night. The Pistons shot a season-high 56.2 percent from the field while leading from start to finish.

QUOTABLE: "I just told myself, 'It's Thanksgiving.' I've got a lot of family in town and they want to see me play. I had to do my job just to stay on the floor tonight."

-- Pistons guard Richard Hamilton, who had been ejected for arguing calls in two of the Pistons' previous four games.

THE STAT: 28. The Pistons had a season-high 28 assists on 41 field goals, leading to their hot shooting. They were averaging 17.7 apg, second worst in the NBA. Four players had at least four assists, led by Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey (7).

TURNING POINT: After Milwaukee whittled the Pistons' early 14-point lead to three, 33-30, Pistons coach John Kuester sent in starting point guard Stuckey in place of backup Will Bynum. That gave an immediate jolt to the offense. Stuckey scored seven points and assisted on a Charlie Villanueva 3-pointer to restore Detroit's double-digit advantage before Stuckey picked up his third foul and retreated to the bench with 3:24 left in the half

QUOTABLE II: "We're obviously struggling and I feel bad for the guys. I can see the frustration setting in and simple plays for us to make, we're having difficulty making."

HOT: Stuckey has averaged 17 points over the last 10 games, scoring in double figures each of those outings. That came after he was benched for one game by Kuester for disciplinary reasons. Stuckey is doing most of his damage on drives to the basket and mid-range jumpers.

NOT: Bucks guard John Salmons is averaging just 11 points over the last five games and has made just 4 of his last 15 3-point attempts. He scored 11 points Friday and had difficulty guarding Hamilton.

GOOD MOVE: Kuester decided to use a zone at the start of the fourth quarter with his team up by 11. He went with a three-guard alignment and was also trying to protect Stuckey, who had five fouls. By the time Kuester went back to a more conventional look and called off the zone, the Pistons' lead had ballooned to 91-73.

BAD MOVE: Skiles started Jon Brockman for the injured Andrew Bogut. The Pistons scored the first six points of the game and never looked back. Brockman was quickly pulled and didn't return until fourth-quarter garbage time.

ROOKIE WATCH: Bucks forward/center Larry Sanders tied his season high with eight points and also grabbed a career-best 10 rebounds.

NOTABLE: Milwaukee forward Corey Maggette reached the 12,000-point mark for his career with a fourth-quarter jumper. He now has 12,005 points. ... The Pistons' previous biggest margin of victory was seven. ... Tracy McGrady played just six scoreless minutes and did not return to the bench in the second half because of muscle soreness. ... Bynum's 13 points were a season high.
