Rockets-Bobcats Preview

The Houston Rockets were pleased with how they finally closed out an opponent. The Charlotte Bobcats have played well in the fourth quarter of their last two games, but it hasn't translated into any wins.

Houston looks to post consecutive victories for the first time in nearly two weeks Friday night in Charlotte, where it will face a Bobcats team trying to avoid a season high-tying third straight defeat.

In three of their previous five losses, the Rockets (4-10) were outscored by an average of 8.7 points in the fourth quarter. Houston, though, outscored Golden State by six in the final 12 minutes of Wednesday's 111-101 victory that snapped a four-game skid. The Rockets went on an 11-0 run after the Warriors pulled within 88-86 with 8:35 left.

"We played with a sense of urgency in that fourth quarter," point guard Kyle Lowry said after scoring 14 points with 10 assists and seven rebounds. "It was very positive for us and it was definitely a stepping stone for us and our future play. We just have to finish."

With Aaron Brooks sidelined the last nine games with a sprained left ankle, Lowry has stepped in nicely, averaging 12.7 points, 10.0 assists and 5.0 rebounds over the last three.

"He's finding people out on the floor. He's getting us easy opportunities," coach Rick Adelman told the Rockets' official website. "He's just getting a feel for the game he plays."

Lowry will likely be matched up with Bobcats guard D.J. Augustin, who is also making a smooth transition to starter, averaging career highs with 13.0 points and 7.1 assists. Augustin took over for Raymond Felton, who signed with New York in the offseason and helped the Knicks sweep a home-and-home set with the Bobcats (5-10) this week.

After outscoring the Knicks by 11 points in the final 12 minutes of Tuesday's 110-107 loss at Madison Square Garden, Charlotte held New York to 18 fourth-quarter points in a 99-95 loss Wednesday.

"We're fighting hard at the end, but you've got to have that same attitude at the beginning of the game," said Augustin, averaging 18.0 points, 6.3 assists and 6.3 rebounds in the last three.

Coach Larry Brown praised the Bobcats for not quitting and was equally impressed with center Tyrus Thomas, who posted season highs with 26 points and 11 rebounds in his first start of the season.

"He played great," Brown said. "Matchups, a lot of times, determine his minutes as a starter. But I don't think we can play that lineup against most of the teams in this league."

Nazr Mohammed could return to the starting lineup after sitting Wednesday, but Thomas will likely see plenty of action against an undersized Houston team missing Yao Ming (ankle) and starting 6-foot-6 Chuck Hayes at center.

Bobcats forward Stephen Jackson scored 16 of his career- and franchise-high 43 points in the fourth quarter as host Charlotte snapped a seven-game skid to the Rockets with a 102-94 victory Jan. 12.

Diaw, Wallace lead Bobcats over Rockets 99-89

CHARLOTTE, N.C.(AP) Boris Diaw arrived at the arena about two hours before tipoff riding a Segway. He maneuvered the motorized two-wheeler through the halls and drove it straight into the locker room.

It fit right in with the forward's eccentric, laid-back personality. It allows him to never get rattled, but his easygoing style at times can infuriate his teammates.

On Friday night, Diaw was aggressive and focused, showing his versatility in scoring 20 points, grabbing 10 rebounds and fueling the Charlotte Bobcats' comeback in their 99-89 victory over the slumping Houston Rockets.

"When Boris plays like that we're hard to beat," said Gerald Wallace, who shook off a poor shooting night to add 21 points and 14 rebounds. "We tell him that every night. He thinks pass first and shoot second. We want him to think shot first and pass second. Because when he's aggressive we're a whole lot better as a team."

With owner Michael Jordan sitting courtside, the Bobcats dominated the second half, with Diaw doing a little bit of everything. He hit 9-of-14 shots to make up for Wallace's 6-of-21 night.

And as usual, Diaw just shrugged about his big role as Charlotte rallied from an 11-point first-half deficit to end a two-game losing streak.

"It depends on what the defense is doing," Diaw said. "If they make me shoot I'm going to shoot the ball."

Shooting is what did in the Rockets, who wilted in the second half under a barrage of bricks.

Chase Budinger scored 19 points off the bench and Kevin Martin added 16, but they combined to shoot 12 of 32 from the field. The Rockets lost for the fifth time in six games as they play without the injured Yao Ming and Aaron Brooks.

"It's a make-or-miss league. By that, when you miss shots, the sky is falling down," said Shane Battier, who was 1 of 9 from the field. "When you make shots everything is honky-dory. Sometimes it is as simple as that."

Things sure looked simple for Diaw.

He scored on a post move, a mid-range jumper and a driving layup in just over a minute to put Charlotte ahead 82-76 with 7:03 left. After Budinger's two free throws cut the deficit to two, Diaw hit another jumper, scored in the lane and then grabbed a contested rebound that led to Stephen Jackson's clinching 3 in transition to make it 93-82 with 2:41 left.

"He brings so much - when he's aggressive," Wallace said of Diaw. "Be aggressive, look to attack. Don't be laid back and sassy and look to pass."

Jackson added 16 points and Nazr Mohammed had 15 points and seven rebounds two nights after he was benched for a smaller lineup in a loss to New York. It was a needed win for the Bobcats, whose early season struggles contradicted Jordan's bold proclamations that they were a better team than last season.

Jordan, who sits at the end of Charlotte's bench, was animated in the first half.

"I heard my owner say 'We have to start guarding,"' coach Larry Brown said. "I think he's pretty knowledgeable. I don't think we guarded great the first half."

The second-half defensive intensity wore down the Rockets, who wasted a good start.

Budinger, shooting 18 percent from 3-point range coming into the game, buried 3 of 5 in the first half in which the Rockets led by as many as 11 and became the latest team to frustrate Wallace.

Coming off his first All-Star appearance, Wallace's slump continued with a 2-of-10 shooting first half that included another charge as he struggles to get to the basket. With Jackson getting into early foul trouble, the Bobcats had few offensive options.

That changed in the third quarter, when Wallace was able to get to the foul line and the Rockets started settling for - and missing - jumpers.

Charlotte started the period on a 9-0 run and the Rockets shot 7 of 23 from the field as the Bobcats took a 72-68 lead entering the fourth.

"We need to be ready to play when we know they're going to push and try to make a run to win the game," said Luis Scola, who was held to 11 points on 4-of-11 shooting. "We've got to know those runs are coming and we've got to not let that happen."

Notes: Rockets coach Rick Adelman repeated Yao and Brooks are still "weeks away" from returning. ... Bobcats G Gerald Henderson missed his seventh straight game with a sore left knee. ... Rockets undrafted rookie G Ishmael Smith was a popular guy before the game in his return home. The Concord, N.C., and Wake Forest product has seen increased minutes with Brooks sidelined. "I've had to throw him out there in situations, but he's handled it very well," Adelman said. "We really like him."

THE FACTS: Gerald Wallace had 21 points and 14 rebounds and Boris Diaw added 20 points and 10 boards as the Charlotte Bobcats rallied in the second half to beat the Houston Rockets 99-89 on Friday night at Time Warner Cable Arena in Charlotte. Chase Budinger scored a season-best

19 points off the bench for the Rockets.

QUOTABLE: "I don't think we guarded great in the first half. The fact that they get it up so quickly puts you back on your heels. Our offense was so good in the second half that we kept them from running.For the most part, we kept them out of transition in the second half and then our defense got set and played better."

THE STAT: Bobcats center Nazr Mohammed scored 15 points and pulled down seven rebounds in making his first start since Nov. 23 at New York. He hit 6 of 9 from the field and 3 of 4 from the line to record his seventh double-figure game of the season.

TURNING POINT: With the Rockets leading 52-45 at the halftime break, the Bobcats opened the third quarter with a 15-2 run to take the lead for good. Stephen Jackson hit a hook shot with 9:25 left to give Charlotte its first lead, and Mohammed capped the run with a pair of free throws to put the Bobcats up 60-54 with 6:59 left.

QUOTABLE II: "They just jumped on us, We talked about that during halftime. ... They came out and scored eight straight points, and that set the tone for the rest of the game."

TURNING POINT II: The Rockets managed to cut the Bobcats lead down to two points eight times in the second half, the last at 82-80 with 5 minutes remaining, but Charlotte responded with a 13-2 run to take its biggest lead of the game and snap a two-game losing streak.

HOT: Diaw hit 9 of 14 from the field -- including 2 of 3 on 3-pointers-- and recorded his first double-double of the season for the Bobcats. He also had two assists.

NOT: Rockets forward Shane Battier was held to two points on 1 for 9 shooting, including a 0-for-6 effort from 3-point range. He also had three rebounds, five assists and two blocked shots in 25 minutes.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Wallace recorded his fifth double-double of the season despite having his problems shooting. He hit just 6 of 21 from the field -- including 2 of 7 on 3-pointers -- but made up for that with 7 of 8 from the free throw line. He also had four assists, three steals and two blocked shots.

ROOKIE WATCH: Rockets guard Ishmael Smith scored two points and had two assists in a little over nine minutes. He was 1 of 2 from the field, hitting a driving layup with 7:56 left in the fourth quarter, but also turned the ball over three times.

NOTABLE: Brown is now nine wins shy of passing Lenny Wilkens for second place on the NBA's career coaching victories list, and 12 short of moving into the No. 1 spot ahead of Don Nelson. Brown now has 1,324 wins to 1,332 for Wilkens and 1,335 for Nelson. ... The Rockets hold an 8-5 lifetime edge over the Bobcats, but have now lost two of the last three meetings. ... Jackson, who entered Friday's game as the league leader in 3-pointers made with 41, hit just 1 of 3 attempts.... Shaun Livingston scored 10 points off the bench for the Bobcats, the third time in the last five games he's finished in double figures.... Charlotte guard D.J. Augustin tied his career high with 11 assists Friday. ... Budinger also had a season-best eight rebounds for the Rockets.
