Some wondered if the Miami Heat would lose six games before the All-Star break, but that's how many the NBA's newest star-studded cast has before Thanksgiving after an embarrassing defeat.

The Orlando Magic have plenty of incentive to add to the Heat's misery.

Miami delivered a 26-point rout of Orlando in the season's opening week, a performance the Magic will be eager to avenge Wednesday night at the Amway Center as they try to hand their Southeast Division rivals a third straight defeat.

As soon as LeBron James and Chris Bosh joined Dwyane Wade and the Heat (8-6), many speculated whether Miami had a chance to challenge the 1995-96 Chicago Bulls' regular-season record of 72 wins.

That mark is looking safer by the day, particularly after Monday's performance. Wade scored three points on 1-of-13 shooting while nursing a sprained left wrist in the Heat's 93-77 home loss to Indiana, adding insult to injury hours after the team learned Udonis Haslem would be out indefinitely with a torn foot ligament.

"I don't think we anticipated anything like this. We're just going to have to deal with it," Bosh said after posting 21 points and 11 rebounds. "When we came into this situation we all knew that it wasn't going to be an easy road, so we have to just embrace the fact that it's not easy."

The Heat have been outrebounded 95-71 in their consecutive losses to Memphis and Indiana, a disparity that has to have Orlando's Dwight Howard smiling.

James, who has fewer rebounds (eight) than turnovers (10) in the last two games, thinks his new team's problems come down to something less measurable.

"We need to have more fun," said James, averaging a career-high 4.2 turnovers. "We are lacking two things, that is having fun and a little bit of swag right now. We are not playing with the same atmosphere, pride and fun as we did early on in the season when we were playing some good ball."

Miami's best stretch came after its opening-night loss to Boston, a four-game winning streak in which it shot 47.9 percent from 3-point range and outscored opponents by an average of 22.8 points.

The most impressive of those victories came Oct. 29 against Orlando (9-4). Wade scored 26 points in a 96-70 blowout of the Magic, a satisfying win after the Florida foes spent the offseason exchanging verbal barbs.

"They came out, they threw an uppercut, and as a team we kind of went down," Howard said.

Howard had 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting before fouling out, but Orlando's other starters didn't give him much help. Rashard Lewis, Quentin Richardson, Jameer Nelson and Vince Carter combined for 18 points while shooting 4 for 30.

Howard had 26 points and 18 boards Monday in San Antonio, but Orlando couldn't hang on to a three-point lead heading into the fourth quarter. Carter exited midway through the final period with a sprained left knee, the Magic had five turnovers in the final 12 minutes and the Spurs took over to win 106-97 - their 11th straight victory.

"I think these are statement games," Lewis said. "It went down to the wire, but we weren't able to pull it out. Sixteen turnovers against a good team won't get the job done."

Carter's status for this game is uncertain, but Orlando certainly needs him to produce. The Magic are 7-1 when he scores at least 13 points and 2-3 otherwise.

The eight-time All-Star had four points in the loss to Miami last month.

Magic hand rival Heat third straight loss

ORLANDO, Fla.(AP) First came "The Decision." Then the expectations. Now the pressure is on the Miami Heat more than ever.

Even from the White House.

Dwight Howard had 24 points and 18 rebounds, J.J. Redick scored 20 points and the Orlando Magic beat Miami 104-95 on Wednesday night to hand the Heat's All-Star trio its first three-game losing streak.

The slower-than-expected start for the Heat has resonated all the way to Washington, where President Barack Obama said before the game in an interview with ABC that it "takes some time for the team to come together."

Nobody could have imagined it would take this long.

"If we had the answer right now, we wouldn't be sitting at one game over .500," LeBron James said of his Heat's 8-7 start. "We're a few games out of first. We're a few games out of eighth."

And they just hit a new low.

Jameer Nelson had 17 points and a career-high 14 assists, coming up with some big shots late to help Orlando pull away and avenge a 26-point loss at Miami earlier this season.

James had 25 points, Chris Bosh finished with 21 and Dwyane Wade scored 18 for Miami in the latest blow to the collection of stars who came together this summer hoping for a championship. Miami also lost to Memphis and Indiana in the last week, but the loss to its Sunshine State rival might sting most.

Even Magic coach Stan Van Gundy, told of Obama's comments, joined in the fun.

"I know there's a lot of time in the day, but I'd be more confident if he didn't know what was going on in the NBA," Van Gundy said, chuckling about Obama's remarks. "We got to get some people back to work. I don't think he needs to be worried about turning the Heat around. Let (Heat coach) Erik (Spoelstra) worry about that, because Erik certainly isn't turning the economy around."

At this rate, Spoelstra might contribute to the job losses.

The Heat's disappointing start has fueled fodder for the Heat's critics. Even Lakers coach Phil Jackson intimated that Spoelstra's job could be in jeopardy if the Heat don't start winning more - and fast.

Miami's struggles certainly delight its neighbor to the north.

After the Heat acquired James this summer, Magic president of basketball operations Otis Smith questioned the two-time MVP's competitiveness for leaving Cleveland. Heat President Pat Riley then took a shot at Smith's personnel decisions, and Van Gundy - the former Heat coach - fired back at Riley.

This time, Orlando finally responded with its play.

On one stretch late in the fourth quarter, Nelson made back-to-back shots and then came up with one of his best defensive plays of the year. With James and Wade on a 2-on-1 break, Nelson jumped up and swatted James' alley-oop pass to Wade, Nelson drove back down and found Redick for a jumper that put Orlando ahead 95-89.

Nelson also made some big free throws in the final minutes to put away the game. But he was ejected with 39 seconds remaining after receiving his second technical foul of the game, the last for taunting Eddie House.

Not that it mattered.

The Magic had already put their stamp on this one.

"We talked in the huddle that we had worked so hard to win this game and to not let that lead we had built completely slip away," said Redick, who started in place of an injured Vince Carter. "It was a big win."

The Heat, hardly resembling a championship contender, went down 12 points in the first half but managed to keep it close. James was showered with boos - reaching a decibel usually reserved only for Shaquille O'Neal in Orlando - every time he touched the ball, but he and Wade came on strong late to push the Heat ahead 88-87 midway through the fourth quarter.

Then it all fell apart - again.

"We're going through a tough time right now," Spoelstra said. "There's no question about it. The guys want to do it. They want to make it right. Guys are competing, and we just have to go through the process."

The win was huge in more ways than one for the Magic.

They've put the Heat in an early hole deeper than they could've ever imagined, and Miami also has several other concerns - most notably injuries.

Bosh left the game briefly in the first quarter with back spasms and never looked the same; Udonis Haslem's season may be over after surgery this week to repair a torn ligament in his left foot; Mike Miller isn't expected back until after Christmas because of a broken thumb and ligament damage; Wade has been playing through a sprained left wrist; James has been dealing with a shin problem for a couple weeks; and Juwan Howard is playing with a broken nose.

"It will eventually" turn around, Wade said. "Right now it's not. I wish I had the answer to it."

THE FACTS: Jameer Nelson scored eight points late in the fourth quarter to go with a career-high 14 assists before being ejected in the final minute of the Orlando Magic's 104-95 victory over the Miami Heat. Dwight Howard scored 24 points and grabbed 18 rebounds for the Magic, who avenged a 26-point loss at Miami a month ago. LeBron James' 25 points and 21 by Chris Bosh couldn't keep the Heat from losing their third straight.

QUOTABLE: "I don't think there is anything missing. If I had the exact answer, then it would be easy to figure out . . . The guys know what it takes to win and once it gets going, then we will know what the difference is."

THE STAT: After shooting .304 (21-for-69) in their 96-70 loss at Miami, the Magic shot .514 (36-for-70) on Wednesday night.

TURNING POINT: After Bosh tied it, 89-89, with a free throw with 4:36 left, Nelson hit a jumper, drove for a layup, assisted a J.J. Redick jumper and then beat the shot clock with a jumper from the corner for an eight-point Magic lead.

QUOTABLE II: "Like I said after the San Antonio game, I have to make smarter decisions down the stretch. I don't know if being ejected is smarter, but the plays I made are the plays I should have made in the San Antonio game. They were there, and I just didn't make them. Tonight we made them as a team and I made them as an individual."

HOT: Brandon Bass came off the Magic bench to hit 9-of-12 shots, most of them from the perimeter.

NOT: Dwyane Wade is 11-for-47 in his last three games, including 1-for-12 from 3-point range.

GOOD MOVE: Redick, in the starting lineup in place of the injured Vince Carter, scored a season-high 20 points and had five assists.

BAD MOVE: The Magic's Jason Williams, who played only 41 seconds, was ejected for the second time this season after throwing a ball at Jamaal Magloire's face with the clock stopped.

IN THE ARENA: Milwaukee Brewers slugger Prince Fielder, who lives in Orlando, showed up as a fan. Magic coach Stan Van Gundy was amazed at the media congregation. When told that even Barack Obama had weighed in on the Heat's struggles, Van Gundy suggested that the president concentrate on turning the economy around and let Eric Spoelstra worry about the Heat. "Because Eric is certainly not going to turn the economy around," Van Gundy quipped.

NOTABLE: The Heat have to go 65-2 to justify Jeff Van Gundy's prediction that they would break the NBA record for wins (72) in a season . . . Bosh left the game in the first quarter with back spasms, but was back before halftime . . . Three of Quentin Richardson's six points came as a result of a foul on James with 0.9 seconds left in the first half . . . The Magic missed 13 free throws, eight of them by Howard.
