Pistons-Grizzlies Preview

It's not often a victory in the first month of the season can have the potential to propel a team to greater success the rest of the way.

The Memphis Grizzlies, however, hope that's the case as they look to build off their latest win while trying to avoid a sixth consecutive home loss to the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

Rudy Gay hit a fadeaway jumper over LeBron James at the buzzer to help Memphis (5-9) snap a five-game skid with a 97-95 home win Saturday over a Miami Heat team without an injured Dwyane Wade.

Zach Randolph had 21 points with 13 rebounds, Mike Conley added 16 points and Gay 15 with eight rebounds as Memphis put forth the kind of spirited effort coach Lionel Hollins had hoped would be a regular occurrence for his team this season.

"This was the most unified we've been," Hollins said. "That's how you win tough, close games, everybody rooting for each other, everybody picking each other up."

Though it was their third win 11 contests, the Grizzlies hope an emotional victory over a potential championship contender could provide enough of a spark to help the club get out of its early rut.

"We put ourselves in the situation where any win can be big for us," Gay told the Grizzlies' official website.

For the moment, the Grizzlies hope it's enough to begin a run at home.

After going 23-18 at home last season, Memphis is 3-4 at the FedEx Forum. The Grizzlies are 1-8 at home against Detroit since the franchise moved from Vancouver. That victory came Dec. 11, 2004.

The Pistons (5-9), however, fell to 2-6 on the road after an 88-84 loss at Dallas on Tuesday.

Gay averages a team-leading 21.9 points on the season, but 15.8 in four home games versus Detroit.

Randolph, averaging 18.6 points and 12.6 boards since missing four games with a back injury, had 24 with 13 rebounds in a 99-93 win at Detroit in the teams' most recent contest Jan. 27.

Richard Hamilton has averaged 19.8 points on 50.3-percent shooting in nine games at Memphis, but 9.3 while shooting 32.9 percent on the road this season. He was held to five points on 1-of-7 shooting at Dallas.

Tayshaun Prince and Rodney Stuckey each had 19 points, but Detroit shot 42.5 percent and was held to fewer than 90 points for the fourth time this season - three of which have come on the road.

Despite an overall poor shooting effort, Detroit led by five after three quarters.

"This is a tough loss because we controlled the game pretty much throughout," Prince said

The Pistons have averaged 98.8 points during their five-game winning streak at Memphis.

Grizzlies pull away in third, beat Pistons 105-84

MEMPHIS, Tenn.(AP) The Detroit Pistons haven't played well in the second game of back-to-backs this season, and the Memphis Grizzlies took advantage of that after halftime.

Zach Randolph had 21 points and 14 rebounds, Rudy Gay added 17 points, and the Grizzlies used a third-quarter spurt to beat the Pistons 105-84 on Wednesday night.

After a close first half, Memphis outscored Detroit 33-18 in the third, then added 10 unanswered points to open the fourth, building the advantage to 22 and running away from the Pistons, who were coming off an 88-84 loss at Dallas on Tuesday night.

"We just needed to get out there, and try to grind and wear them down in the second half," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said.

Mike Conley and Darrell Arthur added 14 apiece for Memphis, which won its second straight and snapped Detroit's five-game road winning streak in the series.

Rodney Stuckey led the Pistons with 17 points, 13 in the first quarter, while Richard Hamilton had 12 before being ejected late in the third quarter. Charlie Villanueva finished with 11 points, while Ben Gordon and Will Bynum scored 10 apiece as Detroit fell to 0-4 in the second game of back-to-backs.

"We had eight quarters and played well in six of them," Pistons coach John Kuester said of the consecutive losses. "The last two quarters, we didn't have the competitive edge I know you need to have on the road. You have to be so mentally tough to play in this situation, and we weren't as mentally tough as I know we could have been."

The Grizzlies outscored the Pistons 58-34 in the second half, eventually holding a 25-point lead in the fourth quarter.

"It's not going well," Pistons center Ben Wallace said. "I don't count quarters. I count wins and losses. We're just not winning as much as we are losing. I'm not going to get into how many quarters we played well. We're just not doing the things I know we're capable of doing."

Memphis made a lineup adjustment for the game, keeping rookie Xavier Henry starting at shooting guard, and letting O.J. Mayo come of the bench. Hollins said the goal is to get more offensive punch from his reserves.

Henry managed two points, hitting his only shot, and Mayo had nine, helping Memphis score a season-high 41 points off the bench.

"We got the win, and we had 41 points off the bench," Hollins said. "I think it played out the way that I hoped it would play out."

Stuckey got the Pistons off to a good start with all of his 13 first-half points in the opening quarter. But Detroit couldn't maintain the advantage, and the game settled into an exchange of leads. There were 10 in the first half.

Villanueva made all but one of his six shots for his 11 points, and Detroit eventually carried a 50-47 lead into the locker room despite Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince going a combined 1 of 9 from the field.

The shooting inaccuracy spread to the rest of the Pistons, as Detroit missed its first eight shots of the second half before a 3-pointer from Hamilton.

Memphis, which leads the league in turnovers forced, turned up the defense after halftime. Detroit committed a handful of miscues that led to fast-break baskets, stretching the Grizzlies' lead to double digits. Meanwhile, the Pistons connected on 5-of-19 shots in the quarter.

"The second half, we were going to wear them down a little bit, try to pick them up full court, push the ball every chance we got, and take advantage of the opportunities," Conley said.

The frustration showed with 51 seconds left in the period as Hamilton earned his second technical and was tossed. That enraged Kuester, who earned another tech. By the time Gay finished shooting the technical free throws, the lead had expanded to 80-66, helping the Grizzlies carry an 80-68 lead into the fourth.

"They just outplayed us," Wallace said. "They executed, got stops, and scored when they needed to. We didn't."

NOTES: The game was the 200th in Hollins' coaching career, all coming in three stints with the Grizzlies. The Grizzlies had not won a home game against Detroit since Dec. 11, 2005. The Grizzlies' previous season high for bench scoring was last Saturday, 35 against the Miami Heat. The Pistons had four points off eight Grizzlies' turnovers, a season low for a Memphis opponent. Conley had seven assists, the 14th time in the last 15 games he has led Memphis in that category.

THE FACTS: Zach Randolph scored 21 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Memphis Grizzlies in a 105-84 home victory over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday, the Grizzlies' first home win over the Pistons since Dec. 11, 2004. Memphis had dropped five straight regular-season games to the Pistons at FedEx Forum, but outscored Detroit 58-34 Wednesday in the second half to win back-to-back games for just the third time this season.

QUOTABLE: "It worked out pretty well. Different. But, you know, I've just gotta play through it."

THE STAT: As has been the case all season, the Grizzlies dominated the paint offensively, outscoring the Pistons 68-43 inside. Memphis' 68 points in the paint set a new season high, surpassing the 66 it scored in a 116-110 overtime loss to Boston on Nov. 13. Randolph and frontcourt mates Marc Gasol and Darrell Arthur combined to go 20-for-30 from the floor.

TURNING POINT: Memphis outscored Detroit 20-9 over the final 5:27 of the third quarter after the Pistons cut the Grizzlies' lead to 60-59 midway though the quarter on a Tayshaun Prince layup. Rudy Gay scored 13 of his 17 points in the quarter after scoring just two points in the first half on 1-for-8 shooting. Randolph added 10 of his 21 in the decisive quarter.

HOT: Arthur was 7-for-9 from the field in a 14-point, six-rebound effort off the bench.

NOT: After going 12-for-18 from the floor in the second quarter and taking a 50-47 lead into halftime, the Pistons went ice cold in the second half, shooting just 30.2 percent (13-for-43).

NOTABLE: Henry made his second straight start in place of Mayo. Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said before the game the move was to help improve the Grizzlies' bench scoring. For the second straight contest, the Grizzlies, who had been averaging just 21.6 bench points, set a new season high with 41 points from their reserves against Detroit. ... Richard Hamilton was ejected from game with 51.1 seconds left in third after picking up his second technical foul for arguing with an official.

QUOTABLE II: "We got the win and we had 41 points off the bench. I think it played out the way that I hoped it would play out. We have a lot of guys that can play."
