Cavaliers-Pacers Preview

The Indiana Pacers are returning home from possibly their most impressive victory of the season. The Cleveland Cavaliers would likely take any win they can get right now.

Losers of four of their last five, the Cavaliers will try to break out of their slump by continuing their recent success at Conseco Fieldhouse on Tuesday night.

The Pacers (6-6) have alternated wins and losses in their last seven games but were happy to continue that pattern Monday night. After falling at home to Orlando on Saturday, Indiana bounced back with a 93-77 victory over Miami on Monday night, limiting Heat All-Star guard Dwyane Wade to a career-worst 1 for 13 from the field.

"(The Miami Heat) have been anticipating doing a lot of things before the season even started so to get the win on the road, this is a big win for us," forward Danny Granger said. "It was a really good team effort on the defensive end."

Granger and Brandon Rush had 20 points apiece to lead the Pacers.

"It is definitely a momentum builder for us," said Rush, whose previous season high was 16.

The Cavaliers (5-7) are coming off a pair of road losses to the NBA's elite. One night after falling 108-101 to New Orleans, Cleveland suffered a 116-92 rout Saturday at San Antonio.

"We wanted to use these two games as a measuring stick," forward Antawn Jamison said. "We showed signs, but it's just not consistent 48 minutes."

While poor defense has done in Cleveland in the last two games, an inability to score doomed the Cavs in a 99-85 home loss to the Pacers on Nov. 13. Granger scored a season-high 34 points for Indiana in that game, while Jamison had a team-best 19 for the Cavaliers, who shot just 38.6 percent.

Granger, averaging 21.2 points this season, also scored 36 points in last season's final meeting with Cleveland, a 116-113 road victory April 9. The Cavaliers are focused on limiting him this time.

"We're going to throw numbers at him. It's going to be a group of guys," Cleveland swingman Joey Graham said. "There's a lot of guys we're going to throw at him."

While Cleveland has lost consecutive matchups in the overall series, it has won six of seven in Indianapolis. In their last visit, the Cavaliers limited the Pacers to 33.7 percent shooting and Granger to 13 points in a 94-73 blowout Jan. 29.

Indiana is trying to win consecutive games for the second time this season. The first pair of wins also came on back-to-back nights, Oct. 29 and 30 against Charlotte and Philadelphia.

Granger helps Pacers beat Cavs 100-89

INDIANAPOLIS(AP) Danny Granger and the Indiana Pacers picked up right where they left off from South Beach.

Granger scored 24 points and the Pacers beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 100-89 on Tuesday night, building on their impressive victory over LeBron James and Miami.

Granger got off to a slow start but scored 10 points in the second quarter as Indiana expanded an eight-point lead into a 62-37 margin at halftime.

"This had to be a big win for us because we came off of a good road game," Granger said. "And it means nothing if you come back and lose."

Granger made only 6 of 21 shots in Indiana's 93-77 victory over the Heat on Monday. But Granger also had 11 rebounds and six assists, and Brandon Rush added 20 points in the impressive road win.

Back at home against James' former team, it was more of the same.

"We definitely carried it over from last night," said Rush, who scored 16 against the Cavaliers. "It was definitely big. It was definitely important for us not to let that win get over our heads. We didn't want to lay an egg."

Ramon Sessions had 15 points, six rebounds and five assists for Cleveland (5-8), which lost its third consecutive game.

"We have to understand that we have to come out with a sense of urgency and do that for 48 minutes," Cavaliers coach Byron Scott said. "This isn't even close to rock bottom. It's a good test for us. This team and this franchise have not had to play through adversity in the last seven years.

"The Pacers are a pretty good team and we played that bad."

Darren Collison scored 13 of his 18 points in the first half for Indiana (7-6), which won for the third time in four games.

"To go in and have a big win in Miami and not have any letdown is a great credit to the leadership in the locker room," Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said.

Granger scored the Pacers' first five points of the second half and Indiana extended the lead to 34 with just over two minutes remaining in the third quarter.

Granger was coming off a rough shooting night in Miami, when he went 6 for 21 from the field in Indiana's 93-77 victory Monday.

Brandon Rush had seven points in the first quarter - including a 3-pointer from just inside half court at the buzzer - to help Indiana build a 24-16 lead. But the Pacers really got going in the second period.

Granger went 3 for 3 from the field in the second, including a pair of 3-pointers, as Indiana outscored Cleveland 38-21 in the quarter.

Rush finished with 16 points for Indiana, which finished with 12 3-pointers, compared to three for Cleveland.

Daniel Gibson scored 15 for the Cavaliers and Antwan Jamison had 12 points and 10 rebounds in a reserve role. Joey Graham had 11 points.

"This is definitely a loss where we can't let nights like this happen again," Gibson said. "We definitely need to understand that. We have to use nights like tonight so that we never had this feeling again."

Indiana has held its last four opponents under 100 points.

"We're very together defensively," O'Brien said. "That's a nice position when your players are talking about the defensive side of the game. They don't want to not be there for each other. That's a very positive sign early in the season."

NOTES: The Pacers' victory over the Heat created excitement among fans and on the talk radio airwaves about a team that has missed the playoffs the last four seasons. O'Brien made a point of not being excited about it. "Buzz is great," he said before the game. "It's just not something I'm into." ... Scott inserted Graham into the starting lineup at forward over Jamario Moon. ... Pacers center Roy Hibbert left with a head injury in the third quarter and did not return.

THE FACTS: Danny Granger scored 24 points and Darren Collison added 18 as the Indiana Pacers followed an emotional Monday night in Miami with a wire-to-wire, 100-89 victory over the Cleveland Cavaliers at Conseco Fieldhouse in Indianapolis.

The Pacers had beaten the Miami Heat, 93-77, Monday, and the primary issue for Indiana entering the game was, "Could they back it up?"

The answer from the start was a decisive yes.

Granger and Collison scored 13 points each as Indiana took a 62-37 lead at halftime. The Pacers led by as many as 34 in the third quarter.

Reserves Daniel Gibson and Ramon Sessions led the Cavaliers with 15 points.

Indiana (7-6) won for a third time in four games. The Cavaliers (5-8) lost their third consecutive game.

THE STAT: The Pacers entered the game talking about the difference aggressiveness and hustle has made this season. They had taken 29 charges in the first 12 games, including five in a 16-point victory at Miami Monday. They took two Tuesday, with James Posey, Danny Granger each taking one in the first half as Indiana took control.

TURNING POINT: The Pacers controlled much of the first quarter, but Cleveland cut the lead to five and had a chance to cut it to two or three. Ramon Sessions missed a 10-foot jump shot with 5.9 seconds remaining. Pacers forward Brandon Rush rebounded, dribbled just past midcourt and hit a 3-point field goal at the buzzer to give Indiana a 24-16 lead. The Pacers got hot early in the second quarter and continued to pull away in the third.

QUOTABLE II: "A really terrific 27 hours of basketball for us." --- Pacers coach Jim O'Brien

HOT: Rush, after missing the first five games of the season on an NBA-mandated suspension, continues to make an impact for the Pacers. A night after scoring a season-high 20 points and registering season-high seven rebounds and four assists in his second start of the season, Rush didn't start, but came off the bench and gave Indiana an early lift. He hit his first two jump shots from just inside 3-point range, and finished with 16 points and four rebounds. Rush has 16 20, 14 and 14 points in his last four games.

NOT: Anthony Parker missed all five field goal attempts for the Cavaliers.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Collison missed three games last week with an ankle injury. He scored four points with three assists in his first game back Monday at Miami, but was critical Tuesday as the Pacers pulled away early. He had seven points in the first quarter and six in the second, finishing with 18 points, seven assists and six rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: Pacers coach Jim O'Brien moved Mike Dunleavy back into the starting lineup after starting Rush against Miami to take advantage of Rush against the Cavaliers' bench. Dunleavy scored seven points in the first half and Rush scored nine as the Pacers jumped to a 25-point lead.

NOTABLE: The Pacers were coming off perhaps their biggest victory in recent memory, having beaten the Miami Heats, 93-77, in Miami Monday. The victory understandably created a bit of buzz around Indianapolis, to which Pacers coach Jim O'Brien said, "Buzz is great. It's just not something I'm into." . . . After starting flat in recent losses at New Orleans and San Antonio, Cavaliers coach Byron Scott inserted Joey Graham into the lineup at forward over Jamario Moon. . . . . . Pacers center Roy Hibbert sustained a third-quarter head injury and did not return. . . . The Pacers have held their last four opponents under 100 points.
