The Boston Celtics may have been mentally unprepared for their previous two games, but they are likely to come out focused against the Atlanta Hawks.

The Celtics, who are coming off consecutive defeats for the first time all season, will look to avoid their fifth straight loss to the Hawks on Monday night.

After losing to the Oklahoma City Thunder 89-84 with Kevin Durant on the sidelines Friday night, Boston came up short in a 102-101 defeat in Toronto on Sunday.

"I know we're a better team than those two teams, I know we are," said Paul Pierce, who's last-second attempt clanked off the rim as the buzzer sounded. "It's just mentally coming out and having the right mindset. I don't think we have the right mindset coming into these games against opponents that we're supposed to beat."

Boston has surrendered 106.3 points per game in its previous three road games after limiting teams to 88.3 over the first four, and Kevin Garnett knows that the team needs to bring a better defensive effort going forward.

"We can't just show up. We've got to play some 'D,'" Garnett said after the game. "These teams we're playing against are very high-caliber offense teams. We know what they are. On paper they might not be whatever but as far as talent, this league has a lot of talent and you've got to respect that."

The Celtics (9-4) closed out the first quarter against the Raptors with an eight-point lead, but gave up a season-worst 38 in the second, where they have been outscored in each of their four losses.

"We may be the worst second quarter team in all of basketball," said Pierce, who scored 19 in the loss. "We come out, get these leads and then we give them right away in the second quarter. We've got to do a better job and be more consistent throughout the game, quarter by quarter."

Pierce leads the team in scoring with 20.5 points per game and is averaging 23.7 in Atlanta over his career.

Rajon Rondo, who is averaging an NBA-best 14.3 assists, was held out of Sunday's loss with a hamstring injury, and his status versus Atlanta remains unknown.

Nate Robinson replaced Rondo in the starting lineup and scored a season-high 22 points.

The Hawks (8-5), meanwhile, have had trouble scoring at home, where they are averaging 98.3 points compared to 104.5 on the road.

They have lost four of five at Philips Arena, including a 98-93 loss to Dallas on Saturday night.

Atlanta trailed by as many as 18 before a late comeback fell short.

"We didn't come out with the energy we needed," said Joe Johnson, who matched a season low with 11 points for the second consecutive game.

Since 2008-09, Johnson is averaging 23.0 points against the Celtics, and is likely to come out with another strong performance against them.

Al Horford scored 20 points and pulled down 20 rebounds against the Mavericks for the second 20-20 game of his career. Horford, who is scoring a career-best 17.4 points per game this season, has been limited to 10.1 over his previous eight games against Boston.

The Hawks are shooting 29.8 percent from three-point range at home - 25th in the league.

Boston blows out Atlanta right from the start

ATLANTA(AP) The Boston Celtics looked like the fresh team, not the one playing back-to-back games on the road.

The Atlanta Hawks? No one's quite sure what's going on with this listless bunch.

Nate Robinson had 16 points and 10 assists filling in for Rajon Rondo and the Celtics blew out Atlanta right from the start, racing to a 26-point lead in the first quarter on the way to a 99-76 rout Monday night.

This one was over before many fans had even settled into their seats. Paul Pierce hit a jumper, Kevin Garnett made another and the Celtics were off and running.

Pierce said everyone in green was still smarting from a one-point loss at Toronto the day before, and they hadn't forgotten what happened last season, when Atlanta swept all four meetings.

Talk about making a statement.

"The whole bus drive from Toronto to the airport to customs - even this morning's shootaround - you just saw the focus," Pierce said. "Guys were (ticked) off. That's the way we should be every night. We should never have to use losses to motivate us."

Atlanta missed five of its first six shots, and Boston had a double-digit lead before the game was 4 minutes old. Shaquille O'Neal's dunk made it 13-3, prompting the first of three timeouts coach Larry Drew called in the opening quarter in a desperate attempts to slow the Celtics.

Nothing worked. Boston made 18 of 25 shots, the Hawks just 4 of 17 and it was 39-13 at the end of the first.

"This was very embarrassing," said first-year coach Larry Drew, who spoke with his team behind closed doors for more than 20 minutes afterward. "Very, very embarrassing. Very embarrassing. If I had one word to sum it up: embarrassing."

The Hawks have lost six of eight since a 6-0 start, and a disturbing trend is emerging for a team that finished third in the Eastern Conference last season and decided to stand pat, other than fire coach Mike Woodson and promote his top assistant. Atlanta has yet to beat a team with a winning record, and this one was never close.

"We're not coming out ready to play," Drew said. "I'm not seeing any urgency. I'm not seeing any passion. We're not playing like we want it. We're not playing hard enough. It's very, very disturbing."

Most troubling to the new coach, this was the third time Atlanta has lost at home to a team playing on back-to-back nights. Normally, the opposing team comes out flat in those situation. But Milwaukee, Dallas and now the Celtics have run the Hawks ragged right from the start.

"I don't know what we're doing the night before the game," Drew said. "But something is going on that is not allowing us to play with energy or passion. I'm going to find out what it is."

Josh Smith scoffed at the notion that the Hawks are spending a little too much time burning both ends of the candle.

"Everyone is getting their rest," he said. "I don't think that's an issue. We've just got to get back to sharing the basketball and playing together."

That's clearly not an issue for the Celtics, who snapped a modest two-game losing streak even without Rondo. He didn't dress because of a strained left hamstring, but Robinson did a dead-on impression making his second straight start at the point, sparking the Celtics with eight points and five assists in the opening period.

Garnett scored 17 points, while Pierce and O'Neal chipped in with 13 apiece.

"I wish we could bottle this and put it on the shelf or something," Garnett said. "It was imperative to come out with a lot of energy. We played defense for 48 minutes."

Pierce hit a put-back with 5:04 left in the third quarter, putting the Celtics ahead 78-47. They could have gone scoreless the rest of the way and still won.

Boston led 64-42 at halftime and 85-56 after the third, leaving the final period to the backups on both teams. The Boston starters got to enjoy themselves, while there were nothing but sullen looks on the opposite bench as the Hawks watched the clock wind down.

Clearly, no one paid attention to a message written on the board alongside the Philips Arena practice court: "Hustle Will Dominate."

Mike Bibby led the Hawks with 11 points. The other four starters - Joe Johnson, Al Horford, Josh Smith and Marvin Williams - combined for a mere 16.

Johnson, averaging 18.5 a game, was held to six points on 2-of-10 shooting.

"They got off to a good start, and we never recovered," he said. "We never hit back."

Notes: Former Hawks owner Ted Turner attended the game, sitting at courtside. ... All 12 Boston players who dressed out got on the scoresheet. ... In fact, the only player who failed to score was Atlanta backup center Zaza Pachulia, who missed all four of his attempts. ... Robinson came up limping after making back-to-back 3s in the third quarter. But Rivers said it was merely cramps from playing more than usual.

THE FACTS: The Celtics won 99-76 in Atlanta on Monday night to snap a two-game losing streak, but that score -- even as lopsided as it was -- did not tell the story. Boston ended this one early in a 39-13 first quarter that saw them out-rebound Atlanta 16-3, outscore the home team 20-0 in the paint, 7-0 on second-chance points, and 7-0 on fast break points. Point guard Rajon Rondo (left hamstring) missed his second straight game for Boston to no effect as the Celtics got double-doubles from Kevin Garnett (17 points, 11 rebounds) and Shaquille O'Neal (13 and 11). After a 6-0 start, Atlanta has lost six of eight games. This was the Hawks' second straight home loss to a team playing the second game in back-to-back situations. Boston lost 102-101 Sunday in Toronto. Dallas took a 18-point lead in Atlanta Saturday night, and held on to win 98-93.

QUOTABLE: "This is embarrassing. Very, very embarrassing. If I had to sum it up in one word, embarrassing. I've said our character won't be tested when we're doing well. The minute we hit a bump in the road, how do we respond? Thus far, from what I've seen, the response has not been good . . . and that's very, very disturbing. We're looking to point fingers, we're playing the blame game, but more importantly our energy level is just not good at all. We're playing like . . . we're coming off a back-to-back-to-back. I told the guys I don't know what you're doing the night before we play, I don't know what you're doing away from the floor, I don't know what it is; something's going on that is not allowing us to play this game with the energy and passion that we should be playing it with. As a head coach, I've got to find out what that is."

THE STAT: Boston starters outscored Atlanta starters 68-27 while making 30 of 44 shots (68.2 percent). Atlanta starters made just 10 of 35 (28.6 percent). The Celtics made 18 of 25 shots (72 percent) in the first quarter. Mike Bibby was the only Hawks starter to score in double figures, with 11 points.

TURNING POINT: There was no turning point, but a sequence at the very end of the first half summarized the tone. When Boston's Paul Pierce drove the left baseline, Atlanta's Al Horford blocked the shot and as it was about to go out of bounds off a Boston player, Garnett flew out of bounds and while making an athletic play he cupped the ball while airborne and whipped it to Ray Allen beyond the 3-point line. Allen made a 3-pointer for a 64-42 halftime lead. That was Atlanta's only blocked shot.

QUOTABLE II: "We came into the game completely with a defensive mindset. The offensive was terrific, but the reason we got early offense was we got stops and we were able to run. I don't think we talked about offense from yesterday to today. I don't even think I said the word offense. You could see their defensive disposition right at the start was terrific. When we play like that, we're a really good team. It was interesting [Monday] morning. I felt that we would compete defensively. The question is can we do it every night with a veteran team. It just seems like at times we start counting how many more games we have to pay."

HOT: The Celtics entered the game leading the NBA with a .503 shooting percentage, and made 40 of 75 shots in the game even though Boston made just 3 of 13 shots in the fourth quarter (in which no starters played). . . . In consecutive starts in place of Rondo, Nate Robinson has scored 22 and 16 points on 14 of 23 shooting. He made 7 of 11 3-pointers in those games.

NOT: The Hawks entered the game No. 2 in the NBA in field goal percentage (.493), but made just 28 of 81 shots (34.6 percent), including 4 of 17 in the first quarter, and 4 of 21 in the third. . . . Pierce has not made a 3-pointer in three games, missing his only try Monday and both tries Sunday. . . . Atlanta's Joe Johnson has scored 11, 11 and 6 points in his past three games, making just 10 of 36 shots in that span, and 2 of 12 treys. . . . Atlanta's Marvin Williams has attempted one 3-pointer in each of the past four games, and missed them all.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Atlanta-based actor/musician/producer Christopher Brian Bridges was in Philips Arena Monday. Some know him as "Ludacris." . . . Hip-hop artist Shad Moss, who sometimes goes by the nickname of, "Bow Wow, " was in the house as well. . . . Actor Chris Tucker took in the action from courtside. . . . Former NBA player Derek Anderson, a friend of Rondo's, was at the game. . . . Evander Kane, a 19-year-old member of the NHL's Atlanta Thrashers whose parents named him after boxer Evander Holyfield of Atlanta, was present. . . . Atlanta-based hip hop artist, Terius Youngdell Nash, whose stage name is "The-Dream," earned a cheer. . . . Former NFL running back Jerome Bettis was seen yucking it up with fans, sort of, but not really. Also, former Hawks owner Ted Turner was in the building and left at halftime.

ROOKIE WATCH: For the second straight game, Atlanta's Jordan Crawford was a bright spot for his team. After scoring 10 points -- all in the second half -- of Saturday's loss to Dallas even though he did not play in the previous three-and-a-half games, he scored 10 against Boston with season highs of seven rebounds and four assists. But he made just 3 of 14 shots. . . . Celtics point guard Avery Bradley made his NBA debut, picking up a rebound, an assist, and a steal. He missed both his shots. Bradley had been inactive much of the season with an ankle injury. . . . Boston 7-foot center Semih Erden of Germany had 4 points, four rebounds and four fouls in 19-plus minutes. . . . Boston forward Luke Harangody had two points and two rebounds.

NOTABLE: Robinson did not play after suffered a leg cramp while making a 3-point shot with in the third quarter. . . . Atlanta is 8-6 after a 6-0 start, but has not beaten a team with a winning record and is 3-5 at home. The Hawks' victories have come over Memphis (5-9), Philadelphia (3-10), Washington (4-8), Cleveland (5-7), Detroit (5-8), Minnesota (4-10) twice and Indiana (5-6). Records shown were entering Monday night's action.
