Wizards-Pistons Preview

The Washington Wizards hope have John Wall back after their star rookie sat out the last three games with a foot injury.

If he is unable to go, however, a healthy Gilbert Arenas is proving he is capable of helping carry the team.

Arenas and the Wizards look to win for the third time in four games and pick up their first road victory of the season Sunday against the Detroit Pistons.

Wall hasn't played since a 103-96 loss to Chicago on Nov. 13 with what Washington (4-7) has been calling a sprained left foot. Wizards coach Flip Saunders said Wall, who is averaging 18.1 points, 9.8 assists and a league-best 3.3 steals after being the top draft pick last spring, could play at The Palace of Auburn Hills.

Washington also played the last three games without center Yi Jianlian (bruised right knee), but his availability his doubtful.

Wall's absence has been a bigger blow, but despite being without their dynamic playmaker, the Wizards have won two of three behind Arenas. He is looking healthy and playing well after appearing in a total of 47 games over the previous three seasons because of various left knee injuries, and last season's lengthy suspension for bringing guns into the Wizards' locker room.

The three-time All-Star played a season-high 39 minutes, scoring a team-best 24 points in Friday's 89-86 victory over Memphis.

"Gil is making the right plays," Saunders said. "He is trying to do what needs to be done from the team concept to try to win."

Arenas scored 30 against the Bulls - including 21 after Wall exited with 4:37 left in the third quarter - and is averaging 20.8 points on 45.2 percent shooting in his last four games. He had averaged 10.3 points on 27.7 percent shooting in his first four.

Washington (4-2), though, is still winless in five road games this season. Notching that first road win in Detroit could be difficult for the Wizards, who have been outscored by an average of 13.6 points in losing five straight there since Jan. 26, 2007.

The Pistons (4-8) have won six straight over Washington overall - their longest active winning streak - but also have been having their own problems lately.

There have been signs of discontent all season for Detroit (4-8), which is off to its worst start since 2000-01.

Rodney Stuckey was temporarily benched earlier this month, and Detroit coach John Kuester got into a heated verbal exchange with Tayshaun Prince during Monday's loss at Golden State. In Wednesday's 103-90 loss to the Lakers, Richard Hamilton was given two quick technicals and ejected less than five minutes into the game.

The Pistons, trying to avoid starting 4-9 for the first time since 1992-93, also continue to get little from Ben Gordon, who is averaging 10.2 points in his last six games after averaging 20.2 points in his first six.

"I'm not going to lie to you. I'm disappointed," Kuester said.

Hamilton leads Pistons to OT win

AUBURN HILLS, Mich.(AP) After 11 NBA seasons, Richard Hamilton knows his days as an elite scorer are probably over.

He's still capable of lighting things up on occasion, though.

Hamilton scored 12 of his 27 points in overtime in the Detroit Pistons' 115-110 victory over the Washington Wizards on Sunday night.

"I still enjoy playing this game, and I'm always going to work hard out there," said Hamilton, who came into the night averaging just 12.1 points. "When they need me, like they did tonight, I'm going to be ready."

Hamilton hit five straight jumpers before missing with 23 seconds left in the extra period. He later added two free throws to give the Pistons a four-point lead.

"We could tell that the Wizards were having trouble guarding Rip down the stretch," Pistons coach John Kuester said. "He had things going, and we were going to keep getting him the ball."

Hamilton's overtime heroics wouldn't have been possible without Charlie Villanueva's performance in regulation. Villanueva had 25 points and 10 rebounds in the first 48 minutes, and also blocked Gilbert Arenas' 3-point attempt that would have put the Wizards up by five with 1:17 left.

"I was just determined to win this game," Villanueva said. "In the end, Rip did what we needed from him. He's been struggling, so it is always good to see him get going like that."

Kuester even got some coaching help from veteran Tracy McGrady.

"Tracy came up with a play, and we got two huge 3-pointers out of it in the fourth quarter - Will Bynum got one and Charlie got one," Kuester said. "That's how you know you are coming together as a team - when guys speak up in situations like that."

Wizards rookie star John Wall missed his fourth straight game because of a sprained left foot. He was on the Wizards' active list, and coach Flip Saunders said before the game that he hoped to get a few minutes out of him, but Wall ended up watching in street clothes.

JaVale McGee had 20 points and 16 rebounds for the Wizards. Gilbert Arenas added 19 points and a career-high 16 assists.

"We played a great game, so this one hurts," Arenas said. "The blowouts don't hurt - it is the ones you should have won. We should have won this, but I had two key turnovers."

Hamilton's fifth jumper put Detroit up 112-110 with a minute left in overtime, and two straight Wizards turnovers let the Pistons hang on for the win.

"Rip did in overtime what you want your veteran players to do - he took over the game," said Wizards coach Flip Saunders, who coached Hamilton for three years in Detroit.

Washington only scored 17 points in the first quarter, but came alive against the Pistons' backup in the second. The Wizards hit eight of their first nine shots and finished the quarter with 38 points to take a 55-52 lead.

Detroit cut it to 78-77 after three, but Washington took advantage of the same matchups that had given them the big second quarter. The Wizards were up 96-89 with 5:17 to go, but Villanueva answered with his fourth 3-pointer of the game.

Five straight points from Andray Blatche put the Wizards up 102-98 with 1:40 left, but Villanueva's block led to his tying layup with 20.9 seconds to go. Blatche had an open 3-pointer at the buzzer, but missed to set up overtime.

"Charlie has been doing that for us all season," Hamilton said. "He was huge tonight."

NOTES: The Pistons had to stop a promotion involving their mascot and a frozen turkey when the thawing bird dripped water in several parts of the floor. ... Arenas and McGee had double-doubles by the end of the third quarter. ... Several Pistons greeted Saunders - their former coach - before the game, although Ben Wallace did not. ... Detroit's Austin Daye didn't play after starting the last two games.

THE FACTS: Richard Hamilton scored 12 of Detroit's 13 points in overtime as the Pistons pulled out a 115-110 victory over the Washington Wizards at The Palace Sunday night. Hamilton equaled his season high with 27 points.

QUOTABLE: "I can play until I'm 50."
-- Hamilton on the perception of critics that he's on the downside of his career. Hamilton was averaging just 12.1 ppg entering the game.

THE STAT: 48-31. The Pistons' high-octane bench was at it again, out-scoring the Wizards' reserves by 17 points. The Pistons' bench is averaging 41.3 ppg, trailing only Cleveland (46.1) and Philadelphia (42.1) in that category.

TURNING POINT: Charlie Villanueva's putback in traffic after a missed Hamilton 3-point attempt.with 2:16 remaining in regulation kept the Pistons within striking distance. Villanueva was fouled on the play by Gilbert Arenas and completed the three-point play to pull Detroit within 100-98.

QUOTABLE II: "These are the ones that hurt. The blowouts don't hurt but these are the ones you should have won."

HOT: Villanueva was clutch throughout regulation, contributing 25 points and a season-high 11 rebounds to record his second double-double this season. Villanueva, who scored 11 fourth-quarter points, ranks second behind Rodney Stuckey on the Pistons at 15.2 ppg.

NOT: Arenas dished out a career-high 16 assists but made three crucial turnovers in the final 40.9 seconds of overtime. He made a bad pass out of a double team, threw away an outlet pass to Nick Young and lost control of the ball in the offensive zone.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Wizards center JaVale McGee grabbed a career-high 16 rebounds to go along with his season-high 20 points. McGee is averaging 11.8 rpg in the last four games.

GOOD MOVE: Pistons forward Tracy McGrady suggested a fourth-quarter play to head coach John Kuester that freed up the Pistons' outside shooters for two 3-pointers.

BAD MOVE: Arenas passed up a chance to take the final shot of regulation, tossing the ball out to Andray Blatche for a 3-point attempt. Blatche, who has only attempted 11 3-pointers this season, missed to give the Pistons new life.

ROOKIE WATCH: Wizards guard and top pick John Wall was on the active list but did not dress. Wall, who is averaging a team-best 18.1 ppg, missed his fourth straight game with a left foot sprain but he participated in pregame warmups and coach Flip Saunders expects him to return Tuesday against Philadelphia.

NOTABLE: Jason Maxiell made his second start at power forward this season against Washington's big frontline. Maxiell had 14 points and five rebounds. Austin Daye, who has started all other games at that spot, did not play. ... The Pistons gave up a season-high 38 points in the second quarter. The most any previous Pistons opponent had scored in a quarter was 36, Portland's first-quarter total against them. ... Arenas' previous high in assists was 15 against Memphis on Nov. 11, 2002, when he played for Golden State.
