Suns-Bobcats Preview

The last time the Phoenix Suns lost three in a row was also the last time they visited Charlotte.

Trying to avoid a repeat, the Suns will have to overcome Steve Nash's absence Saturday night against the Bobcats.

Phoenix (6-6) has lost the first two matchups on its four-game road trip in lopsided fashion, following Wednesday's 123-96 loss at Miami with a 105-89 defeat at Orlando on Thursday, when Nash sat out for the first time this season due to a sore groin.

Without him, the Suns fell behind by as many as 32 before the Magic emptied their bench.

"Trust me. I've come to Florida before and lost twice, too," said Grant Hill, a bright spot for Phoenix with a team-high 21 points against Orlando. "It's always tough to lose on national television twice. But we've got some new guys. We're still learning each other. It's a long season."

An extended period without Nash would make the season seem much longer. Since he rejoined the team in 2004-05, Phoenix is 9-18 when Nash is out of the lineup, and 329-148 when he does play.

It was originally believed Nash would return for this game, but coach Alvin Gentry ruled him out after the two-time MVP didn't participate in Saturday's shootaround. Gentry added that Nash also was unlikely to play Monday at Houston, saying it's "not worth the risk" that something could go "terribly wrong."

Goran Dragic will start a second straight game in place of Nash, who is averaging a team-best 19.3 points and 8.9 assists.

"Everything on that team revolves around Steve Nash, so they didn't have him (Thursday) and they struggled," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "They're an up-and-down team that scores a lot of points. And without Steve Nash, it's hard for them to play at that pace."

The Suns have found it surprisingly hard to play against the Bobcats (4-8) recently. After winning the first eight meetings between the franchises they've dropped three of the last four, including their last two visits to Charlotte and a sweep of last season's two-game series.

In a situation oddly similar to its current one, Phoenix fell to 0-3 on a four-game trip with a 125-99 loss to the Bobcats on Jan. 16, when Charlotte limited Nash to five points and five assists. The Suns, who also lost the finale of that trip in Memphis, have not dropped three in a row since.

They'll wrap up their current trip Monday at Houston.

The Bobcats had won three of four prior to a 95-87 loss Friday in Miami. Stephen Jackson had a team-high 30 points, including a 3-pointer with 4:56 remaining that gave Charlotte, which had trailed by as many as 21 in the second quarter, a short-lived lead.

"If we would have played like that at the beginning of the game we wouldn't be down and have to fight back," Jackson said. "That's what we need to do, bring that same intensity that we brought in the second half in the first quarter and we'll be OK."

Jackson also scored 30 in Charlotte's 114-109 overtime victory at Phoenix on Jan. 26 to complete the season series sweep.

Jackson has triple-double, Bobcats beat Suns

CHARLOTTE, N.C.(AP) Before the Charlotte Bobcats scattered for the offseason last spring, Stephen Jackson walked into his exit interview and heard coach Larry Brown issue a challenge.

"He told me I was one of the guys in the league that could either come close or flirt with a triple-double every night," Jackson said. "That says a lot from a Hall of Fame coach like Larry Brown to believe that you can do that."

Jackson did his coach proud on Saturday night with 24 points, 10 rebounds and 10 assists for the first triple-double in franchise history in the Bobcats' 123-105 victory over a listless Phoenix Suns team playing without Steve Nash.

"It feels good to do what he asked," Jackson said of Brown.

It was the second career triple-double for the sometimes volatile Jackson, whose first also came against the Suns when he was with Golden State in the 2008-09 season. He hit 10-of-13 shots and spearheaded an ultra-efficient night for the Bobcats, who also got 26 points from Boris Diaw and shot 58 percent from the field.

Tyrus Thomas added 22 points for Charlotte, which was met with little resistance by the Suns in transition or inside, scoring 64 points in the paint and leaving Suns coach Alvin Gentry fuming.

"We didn't guard anyone. We let a team that's averaging 93 (points) put up 123, and they were nice about it," Gentry said. "They should have gotten 140."

Playing its second straight game without Nash, its star point guard slowed by a strained groin, Phoenix wilted in the second half and hit only five of 21 3-pointers.

Since hitting 22 3s in a Nov. 14 win over the Los Angeles Lakers, the Suns have dropped three straight by a combined 61 points while shooting 17 of 77 from long range.

Grant Hill scored 23 points, Hedo Turkoglu added 18 and Nash's fill-in, Goran Dragic, had 17 points, 10 assists and no turnovers for the Suns, who let Charlotte shoot 59 percent in the second half.

"This isn't about Steve, guys," Gentry said. "We had 12 guys out there and didn't play with any kind of effort."

Gentry said he'll be cautious with Nash and may also sit him in Monday's visit to Houston. Nash received treatment during the morning shootaround and before the game, and finished with some shooting drills about 30 minutes before tipoff.

Nash then watched from the end of the bench as the Bobcats took control early in the second half with a barrage of easy transition dunks and layups.

"It was a layup drill in the third quarter," Gentry said.

Three timeouts by Gentry in just over 5 minutes couldn't stop Charlotte's 25-8 run that snapped a 58-all tie. Thomas was scoring at will inside and Jackson's layup put Charlotte ahead 83-66 with 2:46 left in the third quarter.

The Suns got within 98-90 on Jason Richardson's three-point play with 6:58 left, but the Bobcats responded with a 9-2 run.

"Regardless of how we're shooting the ball, we have to play better defense," said Richardson, who had 13 points on 3-of-11 shooting.

A night after a disappointing loss in Miami that saw Gerald Wallace foul out and then get ejected, Charlotte again got little early from its second-leading scorer, thanks to more foul trouble.

But Wallace scored 10 points in the fourth quarter while Jackson gave the 7-year-old Bobcats a milestone in their fourth win in six games.

Jackson said Brown let him stay in the game late to accomplish his feat. He got his 10th rebound with 4:52 left and then fed Wallace for an alley-oop dunk. Jackson got his 10th assist on Diaw's 3 with 1:07 to go.

"Jack, Gerald and Boris are capable of getting double-figure rebounds every game," Brown said. "Assists are sometimes more difficult to come by, but they all have that ability and I don't know if a lot of guys in the league have that."

Jackson's other triple-double came Feb. 4, 2009, when he had 30 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists against Phoenix.

"The only great thing about it," Jackson said, "is that it's a great gift for my mom on her birthday."

Notes: It was Brown's 1,323rd professional win, leaving him 13 shy of passing Don Nelson for the most all-time in the NBA and ABA. ... Bobcats owner Michael Jordan wasn't in his courtside seat for the first time this season. ... Bobcats F Dominic McGuire made his Charlotte debut following a shin injury. He didn't score, but had three rebounds and three assists. ... The schedule allowed for Gentry to visit his hometown of Shelby, N.C., on Friday, where he loaded up on barbecue, sweet tea and other Southern fare. ... Suns C Robin Lopez (sprained knee ligaments) was getting his knee iced at shootaround as he remains sidelined.

THE FACTS: Stephen Jackson scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists to record the first triple-double in franchise history as the Charlotte Bobcats downed the Phoenix Suns 123-105 Saturday night at Time Warner Cable Arena. Boris Diaw led all scorers with 26 points while Grant Hill led Phoenix with 23 points.

QUOTABLE: "They were a small team out there without their star player and we knew that we could attack and be aggressive. We knew that if we played defense we could beat these guys."

THE STAT: Phoenix from behind the arc. The Suns shot just 5-for-21 (.238) from behind the arc in Saturday's loss to Charlotte. The Suns came in averaging 9.0 threes on the season and were connecting on 37.5 percent of their attempts.

TURNING POINT: Tyrus Thomas alley-oop. The Charlotte forward slammed home a pass from Jackson at the 8:01 mark of the third quarter. The dunk ignited the home crowd and was an important piece of Charlotte's 13-2 run. The Bobcats and Suns were tied for the only time in the second half when the run began. The Bobcats were leading 73-60 after a Diaw jumper at the close of the run and never looked back.

QUOTABLE II: "We let a team that is averaging 93 points a game score 123 and they were nice about it. They probably could have scored 140. If we are going to be a good team we have to play defense. HOT: Jackson. The Charlotte guard scored 24 points, grabbed 10 rebounds and dished out 10 assists to register the triple-double in franchise history. On the night Jackson was 10-for-13 from the floor and 4-for-7 from behind the arc and added two steals and two blocks to his stat line. Jackson is averaging 26.0 points, 5.0 rebounds and 5.3 assists over his last four games. He has also connected on 18 threes in that span.

QUOTABLE III: "Coach (Brown) told me I needed to get a rebound and two assists. I was ready to come out and wasn't concerned about the triple-double, but that's the thing that we all love about coach. He wanted me to stay in the game and wanted me to get the triple-double. I thank Coach for thinking about me."

NOT: Phoenix Suns defense. The Suns allowed Charlotte to shoot 57.5% from the floor and score 123 points which is almost 30 points better than their 93.2 average on the season and was a season-high point total.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Thomas had a strong night off the bench for Charlotte. The Bobcats forward was 9-for-13 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. He scored 22 points and grabbed six rebounds. Thomas has scored at least 20 points in two of the last three games.

ROOKIE WATCH: Phoenix had no impact from their rookies Saturday. Gani Lawal has been assigned to the Iowa Energy of NBA Developmental League where he scored 22 points and had 13 rebounds in a win Friday night over the Dakota Wizards while Garret Siler was a DNP-CD. Sherron Collins, the lone rookie on Charlotte's roster, had an assist in one minute of action.

NOTABLE: Jackson's triple-double was the second of his career. The first came against Phoenix on February 4, 2009 when he tallied 30 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists for Golden State. Charlotte guard D.J. Augustin scored in double figures for the seventh time this season (16 points) and tied his career high with six rebounds. Diaw scored a season-high 26 points. Charlotte forward Dominic McGuire saw his first action as a member of the Bobcats. He contributed three rebounds, three assists and one block in 18 minutes of action. Grant Hill and Hedo Turkoglu notched season highs with 23 and 18 points respectively. Goran Dragic, starting for the injured Steve Nash, had his first double-double of the season with 17 points and 10 assists.
