Rajon Rondo is showing few signs of slowing down, and he has the Boston Celtics rolling. The Washington Wizards just want to get John Wall back on the court.

In what could be the first meeting between two of the top young point guards in the NBA, Rondo will try to help the Celtics re-establish their success against the Wizards on Wednesday night.

Boston (8-2) is atop the Eastern Conference due in part to stellar play from Rondo, who leads the league with 15.1 assists per game while adding 10.8 points, 5.2 rebounds and 2.7 steals.

While Rondo, 24, is in his fifth season, Wall is trying to live up to the hype of being the top pick in last summer's draft. He hasn't disappointed thus far, leading the Wizards (3-6) with averages of 18.1 points and 9.8 assists.

The 20-year-old Wall, though, is nursing a sprained left foot that forced him to miss Tuesday's 109-94 win over Toronto, but he could be back after accompanying the team to Boston.

With Washington hoping to get its young star back, Rondo is looking to build on another outstanding effort. He dished out 17 assists and scored 11 points in a 116-110 overtime win at Memphis on Saturday, capping a 3-1 trip for the Celtics.

"Excellent trip," said center Shaquille O'Neal, whose 18 points were his season high. "We're 8-2, and if we can go 8-2 out of every 10, I will be very happy ... We should be 10-0, so we're playing well."

The Celtics are 4-0 at home, winning the last two games there in overtime.

Paul Pierce is also playing a major role in Boston's success, averaging a team-high 21.0 points. He is shooting 60.4 percent from the field while scoring 25.7 points in his last three games. The swingman matched a season high with 28 points on 9-for-13 shooting Saturday.

Pierce was limited to nine points in a 106-96 home loss to Washington in the most recent matchup April 9, ending the Celtics' six-game winning streak in the series.

Rondo averaged 17.5 points and 10.5 assists in four meetings with the Wizards last season.

This could be the first time Rondo and Wall find themselves on the court together. However, if Wall's injury remains a problem, Washington would replace him with Gilbert Arenas again.

Arenas was impressive in his first start since his suspension for bringing guns into the Verizon Center locker room, scoring 20 points with seven rebounds and six assists Tuesday. That performance came three nights after he had a season-high 30 points off the bench following Wall's injury in a 103-96 loss at Chicago.

"He's starting to get his legs under him," coach Flip Saunders said. "He puts so much pressure on the other team knowing that they have to guard him."

Arenas is averaging 28.9 points over his last 11 meetings with Boston, but has missed eight games in that span due to the suspension and various injuries.

"It's been almost four years since I've really played the game. Just going out there playing means a lot to me - whether it's starting or coming off the bench," Arenas said.

Boston is scheduled to have its own suspended guard back in Delonte West. He served a 10-game ban stemming from an arrest on weapons charges while playing for Cleveland.

Celtics get rest while beating Wizards 114-83

BOSTON(AP) Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers was ready to give his aging starters some rest. First, though, he needed to know that his bench could handle it.

The Boston backups proved themselves capable in the fourth quarter on Wednesday night, expanding a 20-point lead to 37 and helping the Celtics coast to a 114-83 victory over Washington for their most lopsided win of the season. Except for Shaquille O'Neal, who's battled injuries, all of the starters played a season-low in minutes.

"I know Rajon (Rondo) may have had 30, but other than that I could take those every night," Rivers said. "That would be terrific."

Paul Pierce had 23 points, Kevin Garnett scored 18 and Rondo had 12 points with 13 assists before sitting out the entire fourth quarter. O'Neal scored 13 points in 22 minutes.

With one of the oldest lineups in the league, Rivers has remained mindful of the minutes his starters play, restricting their playing time to keep them fresh for what they expect to be a long postseason. But he's waited 10 games before resorting to pitch counts.

"You've got to get yourself thrown back into the season," Rivers said. "But now it's time to get our minutes to where we want them."

Nick Young scored 20 points for the Wizards, who were without No. 1 overall draft pick John Wall and center Yi Jianlian. Both also missed Tuesday night's game, a 109-94 victory over Toronto.

"We didn't play them last night and we won," Wizards coach Flip Saunders said. "Not much to say."

The depleted roster helped Boston pull away early and rest their aging starters in its first game back after a four-city road trip.

"I told our guys, 'They reached right into our chest and just took away our will,"' Saunders said. "We just couldn't do anything. They passed and shot at will."

The Celtics have won three in a row and eight of their last nine.

"They're built for a championship; we're rebuilding," said Gilbert Arenas, who scored 20 on Tuesday and just nine on Wednesday. "These are the games when you're on the playground and you beat somebody up, and then the real bully comes and beats you up. We played great last night ... and then the big fish came and whooped us up."

It was 89-69 at the end of three quarters, and the Celtics' bench led by as many as 37 in the fourth. Delonte West scored 12 points in his first game back from a 10-game suspension, Semih Erden scored nine and Glen "Big Baby" Davis had eight rebounds.

"It was fun for me to be able to sit back and watch these guys. I just found myself being a fan of the game, which I am anyway," said West, who was punished after pleading guilty to weapons charges. "You realize it's a championship-caliber team and I'm a part of it."

Boston trailed 12-9 before scoring 12 of the game's next 13 points, including three straight inside baskets from O'Neal. Washington cut it to three points in the second quarter against the Boston bench, but the Celtics' starters returned and scored 12 in a row, this time with Garnett putting in three baskets.

Garnett also hit a long 2-pointer in the closing seconds of the half to make it 60-44.

Notes: West was a free agent after spending last season with Cleveland, but the Celtics inherited the suspension when they signed him. ... Wall, averaging 18.1 points and 9.8 assists, is sidelined with a sprained left foot, and the 7-foot Yi has a bruised right knee. ... The Wizards had gone five straight games with at least 25 assists, but had only 12 on Wednesday.

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics put on an offensive clinic Wednesday night, cruising to a 114-83 win over a short-handed Washington Wizards squad. Paul Pierce carried a balanced offense that had six players in double figures, with an efficient 23 points in just 27 minutes of action. Rajon Rondo tallied his seventh double-double of the year with 12 points and 13 assists. Nick Young chipped in 20 points off the bench for the Wizards. Boston shot a season-high 65.8 percent from the field.

QUOTABLE: "For two days it's all we worked on ... we are a defensive spurt team, but I thought tonight we had incredible defensive focus. We have to be a defensive team"

THE STAT: The Celtics shot 79 percent from the field in the first quarter, led by Pierce's 12 points. Despite the offensive outburst, Boston only held a five-point lead at the end of the opening frame, as Washington was active on the offensive glass early with eight rebounds off their own misses.

TURNING POINT: Upon re-entering the game midway through the second quarter, Kevin Garnett jumpstarted the Celtics' second-quarter offense, scoring three baskets during a 12-0 run. With the outburst, Boston established a comfortable 17-point edge and never turned back, leading by double digits the rest of the way.

QUOTABLE II: "He looked really good. We were just happy he was out there. He is going to be big for us."

HOT: Shaquille O'Neal continued his torrid shooting since returning from a right knee injury, hitting six of seven shots on his way to 13 points. The veteran center is shooting 81 percent from the field in his last two games.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Pierce continues to sizzle shooting the ball, hitting 3-for-3 3-pointers. The Celtics captain is now drilling an impressive 47.5 percent of his attempts from downtown on the young season.

ROOKIE WATCH: Celtics center Semih Erden shook off a slow start and foul trouble to post his best all-around numbers of the season. The Turkish rookie scored nine points off the bench, to go along with three rebounds and two assists.

NOTABLE: West had an active night in his season debut, posting a balanced line of 12 points, five rebounds and four assists in 21 minutes of action. West had missed the first 10 games of the season while serving a suspension. ... The Wizards had 14 offensive rebounds in the first half. ... Boston's starters collectively shot 71 percent from the field. ... Boston doubled Washington's offensive output in the paint 56-28.
