Raptors-Wizards Preview

John Wall has been living up to the hype of being the No. 1 overall draft pick, bringing excitement to a struggling Washington Wizards franchise while leading all rookies in scoring.

However, after Wall injured his left foot in his last game, the Wizards may be without their young star when they host the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday night.

After winning 45 games over the last two seasons, Washington (2-6) isn't off to a much better start in 2010-11. The Wizards, though, are excited about Wall, who is averaging team highs of 18.1 points and 9.8 assists to go along with 4.0 rebounds. He has four double-doubles and posted a triple-double in a 98-91 win over Houston last Wednesday.

Wall, however, was wearing a walking boot after a 103-96 loss to Chicago on Saturday. He suffered the injury in the third quarter and returned in the fourth, but could be sidelined for a few games.

"It's swollen a little bit," he said. "I sprained it. I just got to take some days off and get treatment on it."

Coach Flip Saunders said he would take a wait-and-see approach with Wall for Tuesday. Forward Yi Jianlian could also be out with a bruised right knee he suffered Saturday.

Washington did get an encouraging performance from Gilbert Arenas, who scored a season-high 30 points on 11-of-22 shooting and made seven of 10 3-pointers. The guard, who was dealing with an ankle injury at the start of the season, had totaled 10 points in his previous two games while going 3 of 21 from the field.

Arenas should be happy to be facing Toronto. He averaged 28.0 points in two meetings in 2009-10 before being suspended the final 50 games for bringing guns into the locker room.

The Raptors (2-8) continue their four-game road trip Tuesday after splitting the first two games. Toronto surprised Orlando 110-106 on Friday before losing 109-100 to former teammate Chris Bosh and Miami the next night.

Andrea Bargnani had 22 points and nine rebounds while DeMar DeRozan added 21 points to keep it close against the Heat. Miami shot 50.6 percent and led throughout.

"We know people are going to think, 'Oh we're playing the Raptors,' and OK, our record is not as good as it should be, but we're going to play hard for 48 minutes," said point guard Jose Calderon, who had a season-high 15 points. "And we're going to give teams a hard time. ... We're a better team than our record says."

The Raptors, though, continue to struggle defensively, giving up at least 100 points in four straight games. Opponents are averaging 104.5 points and shooting 48.3 percent against them - both among the worst marks in the league.

Washington lost two of three to Toronto last season, falling in 109-107 in overtime in the one game at the Verizon Center. That was the Wizards' third consecutive home loss to the Raptors, which have come by a combined nine points.

Four of the teams' last eight meetings in Washington have gone to overtime.

Arenas' 20 leads Wizards over Raptors as Wall sits

WASHINGTON(AP) With the new face of the franchise ailing, the Washington Wizards had little choice but to turn to an old friend, and Gilbert Arenas delivered.

Arenas had 20 points, seven rebounds and six assists to help the Wizards beat the Toronto Raptors 109-94 on Tuesday night.

With rookie sensation John Wall out with a sprained left foot, Arenas started for the first time since his suspension for bringing guns into the Verizon Center locker room.

With a small and quiet crowd of 11,513 looking on, Arenas scored 10 points in the third quarter, when Washington outscored Toronto 36-21 to take a 90-68 lead.

After the game, he played the humble Gil, happy to be here, eager to help out the No. 1 draft choice.

"It's been almost four years since I've really played the game. Just going out there playing means a lot to me - whether it's starting or coming off the bench," Arenas said.

Since March 2007, there have been a host of injuries, real and imagined, knee surgeries and the infamous gun incident, which resulted in a season-ending suspension.

Starting for the first time at home since Jan. 2, the fans applauded warmly when he was introduced and no boos were heard. He thought he'd get the same sort of reception that a one-time top Wizards draft pick turned bust regularly received.

"It surprised me, especially when I had a rough summer. All the stuff I'm reading, I thought the fans were just going to murder me - 'cause I was here with Kwame Brown," Arenas said.

"I was expecting the same thing. They tricked me a little bit."

Washington coach Flip Saunders thinks he's seeing glimpses of the old Arenas, who scored 30 points in Chicago after Wall was hurt last Saturday.

"He's starting to get his legs under him," Saunders said. "He puts so much pressure on the other team knowing that they have to guard him."

Wall, who entered the locker room about an hour before gametime on crutches, traveled with the Wizards to Boston for their game on Wednesday night. Saunders said he hoped the No. 1 pick would play.

Arenas had some help from Andray Blatche, who had 22. Nick Young scored 20, and Kirk Hinrich added 13 points and 12 assists for Washington, which won for just the third time in nine games.

Toronto, which lost for the ninth time in 11 games, was led by Sonny Weems' 16 points.

"It was surprising to me having our team come out so flat," Raptors coach Jay Triano said.

Wall, who had a triple-double in his sixth game, leads the Wizards with 18.1 points and 9.8 assists per game. Arenas said he just wants to fit in alongside him.

"You know, you just got to perform, be a great teammate. People are forgiving. I made a mistake. I want to move on," Arenas said.

THE FACTS: The Washington Wizards, playing their first game without rookie sensation John Wall in the starting lineup and with Gilbert Arenas making his first appearance in the starting lineup, dispatched the visiting Toronto Raptors 109-94.

Wall missed the game with a sprained left foot. With him out of the game, Washington (3-6) got strong contributions from Andray Blatche (22 points, seven rebounds, five assists), Arenas (20 points) and Nick Young (20 points, six rebounds). The Wizards broke the game open in the third quarter when they outscored the Raptors (2-9) 36-21.

QUOTABLE: "Just from seeing him play the last game I could tell that he was getting his confidence back. I was hoping and praying that he would come out and do the same thing. It's great to have him back and play at a high level."

THE STAT: The Wizards have been doing a great job of sharing the ball lately. Kirk Hinrich had a season-high 12 assists and the Wizards had 28 for the game.

TURNING POINT: After Toronto's Reggie Evans hit a putback layup with 9:34 left to trim Washington's lead to eight, the Wizards went on a 13-3 run to help salt away the win.
