76ers-Cavaliers Preview

At this time last year, Evan Turner was embarking on a junior season at Ohio State in which he would become college basketball's top player.

He's returning to Ohio with his NBA career off to a very different start.

Turner has a long way to go to prove he's worthy of being the No. 2 overall draft pick, and maybe visiting the state where he became a star can provide a spark as the Philadelphia 76ers face the Cleveland Cavaliers on Tuesday night.

Turner was the national player of the year for the 2009-10 season, becoming the first Division I player in 50 years to average at least 20 points, nine rebounds and six assists. His clutch play helped the Buckeyes earn a No. 2 seed for the NCAA tournament, after which Turner announced he was skipping his senior season to turn pro.

While top overall pick John Wall is averaging 18.1 points and 9.8 assists, Turner is at 8.5 points and 2.1 assists per game. He's getting much less playing time than Wall because 76ers coach Doug Collins doesn't want to tire him out.

Collins is concerned about Turner's adjustment to the rigors of the NBA schedule.

"It's a big growth to step into the NBA and all of a sudden, you're on a road trip and you're playing in Oklahoma City Wednesday, and then you travel," he said. "You got Dallas and you fly and get in late and you got to learn how to handle how to tell the difference from college, where you play every four days. It's a part of the growth experience and Evan will be fine."

Collins started Turner the last four games, and the move seemed to work as the 22-year-old swingman averaged 14.5 points and 9.0 rebounds in the first two. However, in the last two, Turner totaled five points and 10 boards, going 2 of 9 from the field with more turnovers (three) than assists (two).

After going scoreless in a 116-93 loss at San Antonio on Saturday, Turner heads to Quicken Loans Arena to play about two hours from the Ohio State campus. He played poorly against the Cavaliers (4-5) in Philadelphia on Nov. 5, scoring five points on 2-of-7 shooting in a 123-116 loss.

Cleveland's Mo Williams and Anderson Varejao combined for 45 points in that win - Varejao also had 12 rebounds - but it's possible neither will play Tuesday. Williams missed a 99-85 home loss to Indiana on Saturday due to a strained groin, and Varejao sat out with bruised ribs.

While Ramon Sessions had 17 points and five assists filling in for Williams, Ryan Hollins and Leon Powe took Varejao's minutes but combined for just 13 points and six boards.

The 76ers (2-8) also have injury concerns. Andre Iguodala, whose 12.8 scoring average is his lowest since 2005-06, will sit out for the third time in four games due to a strained Achilles' tendon. Lou Williams has played through an injured shoulder the last two games, but he shot 3 for 9 on Saturday.

"I felt OK," said Williams, shooting 25.7 percent in the last four games. "It wasn't that bad, I'm just going to deal with some soreness. I'm going to continue to play hard and help as best I can."

The Sixers are wrapping up a five-game road trip, having lost the last three.

The Cavs, closing a three-game homestand, have dropped four straight at Quicken Loans Arena. They had six home losses all of last season.

Cavaliers slide by 76ers 101-93

CLEVELAND(AP) Cavaliers coach Byron Scott opened his postgame comments by praising Cleveland's defense, effort and energy.

"Especially," he said, "in the third quarter."

For a change, the Cavs didn't fall flat on their faces after halftime.

Daniel Gibson scored 18 points, Jamario Moon added 13 and the Cavaliers finally shook their third-quarter blues with a 101-93 win Tuesday night over the Philadelphia 76ers, who lost their fourth in a row and played without swingman Andre Iguodala.

The third quarter has been Cleveland's downfall all season. "Our nemesis," Scott said.

Entering the game, the Cavs had been outscored 226-164 in the period, but helped by an 11-0 run, they outscored the 76ers 26-16 in the third and never looked back.

It was only the second time this season that the Cavs outscored their opponent in the third.

"Everybody has been harping on it," Moon said. "We know if we're going to win, we have to play 48 minutes and tonight we finally did it."

Gibson had eight assists and reserve Joey Graham added 13 points off the bench as the Cavs (5-5) ended a two-game slide and got back to .500.

Thaddeus Young scored 17 and rookie Evan Turner had 16 points and nine assists to pace the Sixers, who were missing a key piece in Iguodala. He sat out with a troublesome Achilles' tendon that caused him to miss two games last week and hasn't gotten much better.

"We lose a big weapon when Andre doesn't play," Sixers coach Doug Collins said. "Without him, we lose his quickness. That's a huge loss."

Puzzled by Cleveland's third-quarter issues, Scott had joked that maybe the Cavs should repeat their dazzling pregame pyrotechnics after halftime to fire up his team. None of that was necessary. All it took was some better shooting, defense and hustle.

It also didn't hurt to have back energetic center Anderson Varejao. He had missed Cleveland's previous game with sore ribs, but returned wearing a flak jacket the Cavs got from the Cleveland Browns.

The Cavaliers were without guard Mo Williams, who sat out his second straight game with a groin injury. But Gibson picked up the slack and Cleveland's bench chipped in 54 points.

With upcoming road games at New Orleans, San Antonio and Indiana, it was important for the Cavs to get a win - anywhere.

Owner Dan Gilbert seemed to sense the urgency. Before the game, he wrote, "We need to get this one tonight" on his Twitter page.

The Cavaliers got it by breaking open a back-and-forth game with an 11-0 run in the third, highlighted by a three-point play from Varejao that came after Anthony Parker's hustle.

Parker ran down a loose ball as he fell out of bounds and delivered a blind, behind-the-back pass to Antawn Jamison, who flipped the ball to Varejao. Cleveland's center scored, was fouled and made his free throw give the Cavaliers a 72-61 lead.

The play was vital, but not because of how it happened, but when it happened - in the third.

"That's what it's all about right there," Gibson said. "AP, he's a veteran in this league and to see him laying out trying to win a game, I think that trickled down throughout the whole team. Everybody wanted to do whatever it took to win."

Philadelphia twice got within seven in the fourth, but Gibson hit a big 3-pointer and a jumper to push Cleveland's lead back to 13 with 5:07 left.

Elton Brand had 13 points and 11 rebounds. Jrue Holliday had 10 assists for the Sixers.

Several of Turner's friends were on hand to see the former Ohio State star's first regular-season game in Ohio.

"It was cool," Turner said. "It was definitely cool. It would have been way better if we would have won."

Andres Nocioni's 3-pointer with 2.2 seconds left tied it at 54 at the half and sent the teams to their respective locker rooms looking to figure out how to get their offenses untracked.

Only the Cavs were able to.

"We had a miserable third quarter," Collins said. "We gave them 61 points in the second and third."

Notes: The Cavs have won of 11 over the Sixers. ... Varejao went 4-of-5 and is 14-of-15 in two games vs. Philly this season. ... Turner received a loud ovation during pregame intros. While in town, he visited his favorite breakfast spot: Waffle House. "They don't have them in Philly," said Turner, who ordered a double waffle, sausage and hash browns. ... Scott's relationship with Collins dates back to his playing days at Arizona State, where Collins was an assistant coach. "It was one of my great joys," Collins said. "Byron was a tremendous talent. I felt like I had a chance to help him with his career, which makes me feel good." ... Longtime Cavaliers radio play-by-play broadcaster Joe Tait was released from the hospital after a lengthy stay for a blood clot in his lung.

Sixers-Cavs notebook

THE FACTS: It wasn't a thing of beauty, but it snapped a four-game losing streak at home. And when it comes to Cleveland's 101-93 victory over Philadelphia on Tuesday night ... well, the Cavaliers will take it. That's especially true since the Cavs finally got it right in the third quarter, a constant struggle for them in this early season. But Tuesday, the Cavs outscored the 76ers by a 26-16 count in the third, including an 11-0 run. That broke open a 54-all halftime tie.

The Cavs (5-5) received a team-high 18 points from Daniel Gibson off the bench, and an unexpected 13 from reserve forward Joey Graham. The man whom Graham backs up, Jamario Moon, also scored 13 on 5-for-8 shooting. The Sixers (2-9) got a team-high 17 from Thaddeus Young.

THE STAT: The Cavs are trying to become known for the motion offense Scott implemented -- but Tuesday, the story was mostly defense, as the Cavs forced the Sixers into 15 turnovers, committing just seven themselves. "The turnover thing, that's definitely a problem," Sixers coach Doug Collins said.

TURNING POINT: It's worth repeating: The Cavs won this game in the third. As Scott indicated, they came out with energy and focus, determined not to allow the ghosts of third quarters past haunt them against a struggling opponent.

HOT: In two games against the Sixers this season, Graham has come off the bench to score 10 and 13 points, respectively. In the Cavs' other eight games, he has totaled two. "Joey Graham loves to see us," Collins said with a smile and a shake of the head.

NOT: The Sixers' young backcourt of Jrue Holiday and Evan Turner committed eight of the team's 15 turnovers (four apiece) and shot a combined 7-for-22.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Young had an outstanding game, shooting 8-for-12 and collecting eight rebounds. With Andre Iguodala (sore Achilles) expected to miss more time, Young might be a nice pickup. That's assuming he's not already on someone else's roster.

ROOKIE WATCH: Turner received a nice ovation from Cavs/Ohio State fans during player introductions, and despite the turnovers, gave an all-around performance. He finished with 16 points, nine rebounds and a blocked shot. Meanwhile, undrafted rookie guard Manny Harris (who played for Ohio State rival Michigan), finished with four points for the Cavs.

NOTABLE: Anderson Varejao (ribs) returned to the Cavs' lineup and connected on four of five shots for nine points. Varejao is 14-for-15 shooting in two games against the Sixers this season. ... Elton Brand tallied a quiet 13 points and 11 boards for the Sixers. ... Holiday, the first NBA player born in the 1990s, finished with a game-high 10 assists.
