Before this season, rumors swirled that Carmelo Anthony might soon join the New York Knicks. Having lost five in a row, the Knicks are perhaps hoping they could have already pulled off that trade.

New York will try to snap that drought Tuesday night when it travels to face Anthony and the Denver Nuggets.

Having refused to accept a three-year contract extension with Denver since June, Anthony has been rumored to be headed toward New Jersey and then New York after the All-Star forward told the Nuggets he wasn't going to change his mind about re-signing.

Adding fuel to those rumors was New Orleans guard Chris Paul's toast at Anthony's New York wedding about joining him in the Big Apple to form a super trio with Knicks star Amare Stoudemire like the Miami Heat's Big Three.

For now, the talk has quieted while Denver has gotten off to an uneven start. After recording consecutive wins, the Nuggets (5-5) have dropped three of four, with all of those losses coming on the road, including Monday's 100-94 defeat to Phoenix.

Denver led by as much as 15 in the first half and eight early in the fourth quarter, but was outscored 27-13 over the final 10 minutes. Anthony was a bright spot in the defeat with 20 points and a career-high 22 rebounds, his second straight double-double.

"This is a game we should have won and we let it slip by us," forward-center Al Harrington said. "We've got to get better closing out games."

In his previous home game Thursday, Anthony had 32 points and 13 rebounds to help the Nuggets knock off the previously unbeaten Los Angeles Lakers 118-112. He's averaging 26.3 points and 10 rebounds at home this season while helping Denver win three of four there.

The last time he faced New York at the Pepsi Center, he scored a career-best 50 points in a 128-125 victory, while Harrington led the Knicks with 41 off the bench.

Anthony is averaging 33.4 points on 55.1 percent shooting in his last nine games against the Knicks (3-7) and 35.0 in the last four home matchups.

New York will try to hold Anthony at bay while avoiding its fourth consecutive loss in Denver, but enters this game having given up an average of 110.2 points during its skid, its longest since dropping eight straight from Feb. 5-23.

The Knicks trailed by single digits for much of Sunday's home game against Houston until missing their first eight shots in the fourth quarter of a 104-96 loss.

Stoudemire had 25 points but scored only three during the final period while his team was loudly booed.

"Obviously nobody wants to lose and everybody is pressing," coach Mike D'Antoni said. "The reality is we're 3-7 and we've got a game on Tuesday. So you just try to figure out what's going wrong, how can you get a little bit better."

In the opener of a four-game Western road trip, D'Antoni's team will try to win for the third time in 11 games in Denver.

The Knicks, though, won the previous matchup at Madison Square Garden on March 23 as Danilo Gallinari scored 28 points. Anthony had 36 in the 109-104 loss, which snapped a four-game win streak over New York.

Anthony leads Nuggets past Knicks 120-118

DENVER(AP) Maybe he will be trying to help them win games in the future. On this night, Carmelo Anthony was more than happy to hand the New York Knicks another loss.

"I'm just glad we got the win," Anthony said after the Denver Nuggets' 120-118 escape Tuesday night when he scored 26 points.

Said Amare Stoudemire, who led the Knicks with 24 points: "We did a solid job on Carmelo. Pretty much me and him played chess and canceled each other out."

Stoudemire would love to be Anthony's sidekick soon and not his opponent, and he's been lobbying for a union with the New York native who grew up idolizing former Knicks small forward Bernard King.

Anthony swore it never crossed his mind on this night that he could be playing alongside Stoudemire soon.

"I never thought about that tonight. Never. Not once. Never," Anthony insisted. "That wasn't even on my mind throughout the game."

And he said none of the Knicks lobbied him in their postgame hugs and handshakes for him to join them either via trade this season or next summer, when he'd be the headliner of the 2011 free agent class.

"No, not at all. They're trying to win, we're trying to win," Anthony said. "They competed hard tonight. They fought back. But nobody, no, there wasn't none of that going on out there. Of course not."

Anthony referred questions about any trade talk to general manager Masai Ujiri, who hasn't been speaking publicly since failing to persuade him to sign his three-year, $65 million contract months ago.

Anthony didn't have a great game, committing five turnovers and missing 13-of-21 shots. But he came through often enough for the Nuggets to hand the Knicks their sixth straight loss.

Denver led by 16 early but the Knicks made a game of it by trimming a 12-point deficit to start the fourth quarter to 109-107 with 3:07 left on Raymond Felton's free throw when Anthony was whistled for a technical after tossing his headband when he was tied up by Wilson Chandler while going for a slam dunk.

Anthony was then whistled for a loose-ball foul on the jump, and Chandler sank both foul shots to cap an 11-0 run and tie it at 109.

Chauncey Billups and Ty Lawson hit back-to-back jumpers and the Nuggets settled down.

After Stoudemire's 3-pointer pulled the Knicks to 117-115, Anthony sank one of two free throws with 12 seconds left to put Denver ahead 118-115. Felton dribbled out of bounds, and Anthony again sank one of two foul shots with 9.7 seconds remaining.

Felton's 3-pointer with a second left made it a one-point game and Billups was fouled. He swished his first shot and missed his second high off the rim, the buzzer sounding as the Knicks corralled the rebound.

Al Harrington chipped in 22 points against his former team and rookie Gary Forbes scored 19 as Denver bounced back from a fourth-quarter meltdown in Phoenix one night earlier.

Rookie guard Landry Fields had a big game for New York with 21 points and 17 boards.

Nuggets coach George Karl was asked before the game how his team has handled the trade talk swirling around its superstar that many expect will end up in the Big Apple, where he and TV personality LaLa Vazquez were married over the summer.

"Melo has been very professional, the most professional I've ever seen him, more serious than I've seen him and he's playing at an All-Star level. We kind of read off of him and he seems to be into the team and wants to win," Karl said.

"If we didn't have the commentary that's going on throughout all types of media outlets, I don't think we would be thinking anything's going on. That's a compliment to Melo for the way he's handled it."

Karl said his job, meanwhile, is to convince Anthony that Denver is the best place for him and persuade him to sign the extension that's been on the table awaiting his signature since the summer.

How's that working out?

"I don't know that answer," Karl said. "I can't answer that question. My only feeling is the window of that happening is still there. I don't know how wide the window is; only Melo can answer that. My gut feeling is the window is open, it's not shut yet. If we keep losing games like we did last night it'll close."

So, what would it take for Anthony, who has put his Colorado mansion on the market, to sign the deal and stay in Denver?

"What would it take?" Anthony repeated. "Me and Masai are talking. We got great conversations going back and forth. He understands my options are open."

Harrington said he couldn't sleep at night if there were a $65 million extension awaiting his signature.

Anthony said he has no trouble at all.

"I'm good. I sleep good at night. I'm with my family. I sleep good at night," he said. "It ain't about the money."

It's about family, he said.

"That's a big decision. I want to make my family happy," Anthony said. "I want them to be comfortable, whether it's here, whether it's somewhere else. If your household ain't right, then ain't nothing right."

With that, Anthony thanked reporters and headed home, knowing he can do this all over again Saturday night when the New Jersey Nets come to town.

Notes: The Knicks said team president Donnie Walsh had successful hip surgery Tuesday morning in Manhattan. ... J.R. Smith, who was benched in Phoenix for showing up late to shootaround, played just 1 minute for Denver.

Knicks-Nuggets notebook

THE FACTS: Carmelo Anthony had 26 points and nine rebounds and the Denver Nuggets held off a late rally by New York to hand the Knicks their sixth straight loss, 120-118, on Monday. Amar'e Stoudemire led the Knicks with 24 points.

QUOTABLE: "Pretty much me and him played chess and canceled each other out." -- Stoudemire, on his and Anthony's performance.

THE STAT: The teams combined for 59 personal fouls and 80 free throws, and neither team shot well from the stripe. Denver hit 66 percent from the foul line and the Knicks 69.7 percent.

TURNING POINT: After blowing a 16-point second half lead, Chauncey Billups took charge. Tied at 109, he hit a fade-away jumper to put Denver ahead and then fed Nene on a pick-and-roll for an easy dunk that gave the Nuggets a four-point lead with 1:37 left.

QUOTABLE II: "I never thought about that tonight. Not even once."
-- Anthony, on whether or not trade rumors sending him to the Knicks went through his mind during the game.

HOT: With J.R. Smith in the doghouse for showing up late for shootaround Monday morning, rookie Gary Forbes made the most of extra playing time. Forbes hit his first four shots and finished 8-for-13 and scored a season-high 19 points off the bench. He missed his first double-double by one rebound.

NOT: Knicks forward Ronny Turiaf looked rusty in playing for the first time in four games. Turiaf missed three games with a sprained left knee but didn't have much impact against the Nuggets. He missed his only shot attempt and fouled out after playing 13 minutes.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Knicks guard Landry Fields came into Tuesday's game averaging 9.9 points and 5.7 rebounds and obliterated those numbers, finishing with 21 points and 17 rebounds.

GOOD MOVE: Anthony brought the crowd to its feet with his playmaking midway through the second half. Anthony led a fastbreak and gave Nene a no-look pass for an easy dunk.

ROOKIE WATCH: Knicks center Timofey Mozgov had more fouls (three) than shot attempts (one) in the first half, which is one reason the Nuggets shot 24 free throws before intermission.

NOTABLE: George Karl won his 992nd game as an NBA coach and is on pace to become the seventh coach in league history to eclipse the 1,000 milestone. He is fourth among active coaches on the all-time wins list.
