The Orlando Magic have prided themselves on playing tough defense at home, but their last two games at the Amway Center were anything but impressive.

The Magic will try to avoid losing three in a row at home for the first time in nearly three years when they face the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night.

Coming off those back-to-back home defeats, Orlando (6-3) held on for a 91-90 win at New Jersey on Saturday. Dwight Howard had 16 points and 10 rebounds and Jameer Nelson made a go-ahead basket with 4.1 seconds left after missing two foul shots with 19 seconds remaining.

"We'd lost our last two, so good to get a win, no matter how you do it," said Nelson, who finished with 13 points. "We wanted to get that taste out of our mouth and go out there and get a win."

The Magic shot 41.6 percent - well below their season average of 45.3 - but outrebounded the Nets 43-31 and 13-2 on the offensive boards. While New Jersey shot 55.3 percent in the first half, it was held to 42.4 percent after the break.

"I'm happy for our guys but we still need to play better," coach Stan Van Gundy said.

Van Gundy is especially looking for better effort on defense. While Orlando is allowing 92.9 points per game, it gave up 104 to Utah and 110 to Toronto in the consecutive home defeats.

The Magic won their first four at the Amway Center by yielding 87.0 points a game on 40.1 percent shooting. They had the second-best home record in the Eastern Conference over the previous two seasons at 66-16 and haven't dropped three in a row in Orlando since a four-game skid Dec. 7-21, 2007.

The Magic are looking for their third straight home victory over Memphis (4-6), which has dropped its last two. The Grizzlies lost 116-110 in overtime to Boston on Saturday, overcoming a slow start but falling short.

The Grizzlies rallied from an 11-point deficit in the second quarter to force the extra period, but the Celtics scored the first seven points in OT. Memphis' Zach Randolph finished with 21 points and 11 rebounds but didn't score in overtime.

Rudy Gay led the Grizzlies with 22 points on 10-of-18 shooting and is averaging 25.2.

"As a group we are getting there," said center Marc Gasol, who had 14 points and six rebounds. "We realize that we can compete against anybody. ... We are 4-6 now and we are getting to that point where we must keep fighting and never give up."

Memphis has been prone to slow starts, allowing opponents to average 55.0 points and 50.2 percent shooting before the break. In the second half, however, the Grizzlies are giving up 48.1 points on 43.4 percent from the field.

Boston shot 60.5 percent in the first half Saturday.

Memphis and Orlando split two meetings last season with each winning at home. Randolph averaged 23.5 points and 18.5 rebounds.

The Grizzlies have lost their last two road games in the series and are 4-10 all-time in Orlando.

Magic beat Grizzlies 89-72 with strong defense

ORLANDO, Fla.(AP) The franchise with the NBA's twice reigning defensive player of the year finally started getting back to its roots.

Dwight Howard had 18 points and 14 rebounds, Vince Carter scored 19 points and the Orlando Magic smothered the Memphis Grizzlies for an 89-72 victory Monday night.

"We're a defensive team. That's what we call ourselves and that's what we talk about," Magic forward Quentin Richardson said. "For us to say those things, it was good to go out there and be that."

Against a usually high-scoring team, no less.

The Magic forced 18 turnovers, held the Grizzlies to 36 percent shooting and their fewest points in a game in two seasons. It was a much-needed change for an Orlando team that lost two straight last week and nearly a third with lackluster efforts defensively.

Marc Gasol had 14 points and eight rebounds, and Mike Conley scored 11 points in the Grizzlies' third straight loss. Memphis entered the game averaging 104 points but could get nothing going offensively.

"That's the best defense that they've played, that I've seen on tape, since probably early in the season," Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said. "We were rushing things, but it was their defense that was causing it."

The game was as sloppy as it gets at the start.

There were players bouncing balls off their legs and out of bounds. Poor passes. Missed catches. Double-dribbles and traveling calls. If there was a way to cause a turnover, chances are it happened.

The teams accounted for 20 turnovers - each with 10 - in the first quarter alone, finishing with 38 total for the game. The difference was the Magic at least managed some offense between mistakes and opened a 47-31 lead just before the half.

"Our offense hasn't been as fluid as we would like it to be, but defensively we were up and active all night," Howard said.

The Grizzlies whittled the deficit to five points in the third quarter behind some sharp shooting from Conley and O.J. Mayo. They just couldn't sustain enough offense or keep turnovers from costing them dearly.

Rudy Gay, who hadn't scored fewer than 18 points this season, had only nine points for Memphis. It was the fewest points the Grizzlies have scored since they lost 86-66 at Portland on March 28, 2009.

The loss was humbling enough for Memphis to have a team meeting after the game.

"We needed to talk. It's never too early to have a team meeting," Conley said. "The issues we have as a team, being accountable individually, we've got to step it up and have all the guys in tune."

Orlando used its twin centers, Howard and Marcin Gortat, for extended minutes. The center combo clogged the middle and forced the Grizzlies to stay on the perimeter, and Memphis just couldn't hit a shot.

Mickael Pietrus had a huge 3-pointer late and Howard converted a three-point play to help Orlando pull away 73-58, a lead was never seriously challenged.

The victory avoided the Magic's first three-game home losing streak since December 2007, when they lost four straight. Orlando lost to Utah and Toronto at home last week, the first two losses at the new Amway Center

"If we're serious about being contenders, we have to play like this," Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. "Now we also have to play like this and play better offensively. We can't be like that at the end of the year. But we're 10 games in. What's important tonight is we got back to playing with intensity, and we need to stay there."

NOTES: Florida Marlins president David Samson was touring Orlando's new Amway Center before the game along with others. The Marlins, who have a retractable-roof ballpark opening in 2012, were one of several teams in Orlando for Major League Baseball's annual meetings scheduled to see the new technology and amenities at the NBA's newest arena. ... Howard's technical foul in the first quarter against Minnesota last week was rescinded by the NBA, the Magic said. That brings Howard's technical fouls down to four this season. ... Magic SG J.J. Redick missed the game with back spasms.

THE FACTS: The Memphis Grizzlies could not recover from a 12-point, 10-turnover first quarter and went down to an 89-72 defeat at the hands of the Orlando Magic. Vince Carter scored a game-high 19 points for the Magic, who led all the way. Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph, the starting forwards for Memphis, combined on 8-for-32 shooting.

TURNING POINT: After their dreadful first half, the Grizzlies closed the gap to five early in the second half. Then Nelson set up Carter for a 3-pointer, igniting an 11-2 Magic run that pushed the lead back to double figures.

HOT: Carter needed only eight shots (including 3-of-4 3-pointers) to produce his 19 points.

NOT: Gay, the NBA's third-leading scorer, shot 4-for-17 and went scoreless for more than 20 minutes. ... Orlando's Rashard Lewis shot 3-for-13 and is shooting only .355 for the season.

QUOTABLE III: "I know we were still pretty ugly offensively tonight and we've got a long way to go there. I don't really understand why, but we do. FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Although he had 14 against the Grizzlies, three-time rebound champion Dwight Howard has not been a rebounding fiend so far this season. His average of 10.9 is barely among the top 10.

NOTABLE: The Grizzlies held a team meeting after the game. "As a team, whatever happens in here has to stay in here," Gay said. "Obviously we are not playing well right now." ... Magic guard J.J. Redick, who played in all 96 regular and postseason games last season, sat out the game with back spasms ...
