Celtics-Heat Preview

MIAMI (AP) Heat coach Erik Spoelstra took a seat at the edge of Miami's practice floor Wednesday afternoon, a grim expression on his face until LeBron James walked over a few seconds later.

They chatted. They nodded. They laughed.

For a moment, the first debacle of the Heat season seemed forgotten.

The aftershocks of a 116-114 overtime loss to the Utah Jazz on Tuesday night - a game where Miami led by 22 points in the second quarter, 21 early in the third and even by eight with 29 seconds left in regulation, before Paul Millsap hit three straight 3-pointers to force overtime on his way to a 46-point effort - were still there on Wednesday, which was expected.

They might not be totally gone by Thursday night, either, when Miami faces Boston for the second time this season.

"We still have a long way to go," James said, "to be the team we want to be."

And that had been the Heat mantra long before Tuesday's collapse. Ever since training camp, even before, Spoelstra has been talking about the process of turning a roster of talent into a talented team. James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh had played together before, yes, but never in a system like Miami's, and certainly not while trying to fit a slew of new pieces together.

The Jazz exploited Miami's inexperience together in the second half and overtime on Tuesday, sending Miami to its third loss in eight games so far, and the Celtics will try to do it again Thursday.

"It's just going to take time," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said before his team practiced in Miami on Wednesday. "They're going to have great nights, and then they're going to have nights where they struggle. To me, I've always thought in the first year we won, it always came toward the end of games more, the execution, the timing, the speed. It just takes time."

Entering Wednesday, the Heat had the 10th-best record in the NBA - maybe most surprisingly, just a half-game ahead of Cleveland, the team James scorned so he could chase a championship in Miami.

By no means have the Heat shown that those title plans are farfetched. But that "process" the Heat are speaking of is ongoing, and won't end anytime soon.

"It hurts. It hurts to take time. No one wants to go through the process," Wade said. "But it's life. Everyone has to go through the process. No question, we understand that we're a very good defensive team. We understand that our offense is coming along. And sometimes you take those things for granted."

What galled Spoelstra most about Tuesday's loss wasn't the offense, and how it is or isn't coming along.

It was the defense - which apparently got left behind in the locker room at halftime.

Consider these Jazz numbers:

- They scored 84 points after halftime, more than Orlando and New Jersey scored in entire games against Miami this season;

- They shot 63 percent in the final 29 minutes, their 32 field goals in that span more than Miami yielded in three other games;

- They connected on 20 of 28 shots inside the paint, after going 8-for-21 from the lane in the first half.

"Where do you want to start? It was a layup drill there in the third quarter," Spoelstra said. "We understand that. We're a much better defensive team."

Against the Celtics, they'll have to be, or else they could be just a game over .500 by close of business on Thursday.

Boston has already topped the 100-point mark four times this season, winning each of those games, and shot 46 percent against Miami in the season-opener on Oct. 26, an 88-80 Celtics victory.

And yes, the Celtics took note of what the Jazz did on Miami's court.

"Utah's one of the best teams in the league," Celtics guard Ray Allen said. "If you don't execute down the stretch ... then the momentum goes in the other direction. That's kind of how I look at it. You can make those flaws against some of the teams that are under .500 and won't make the playoffs."

So on Wednesday, the Heat went to work correcting some of those flaws. Practice wasn't about the Celtics; it was about the Heat, watching film, individual meetings, all things to further dissect what went wrong against Utah.

"There's a lot of teams that would love to be 5-3," James said. "But we're one of those teams that's not ever satisfied. We want to continue to get better. We know in the games we lost, we had a chance, and we've got to continue to build from the mistakes we had in those games."

Allen's 3s carry Celtics past Heat again, 112-107

MIAMI(AP) New roster, same problem for the Miami Heat.

They just can't find a way to beat the Boston Celtics.

Ray Allen hit his first seven 3-point tries and finished with 35 points, and the Celtics never trailed in a 112-107 win over Miami on Thursday night, beating the Heat for the second time this season and handing them a second straight home loss.

"Ray was unbelievable on both ends," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said.

Paul Pierce added 25 points and Rajon Rondo had 16 assists, adding to his NBA-leading total. Boston has won 13 of the last 14 regular-season meetings with the Heat in addition to eliminating Miami in the opening round of last season's playoffs. Then, the Celtics ended the LeBron James era in Cleveland a couple of weeks later, setting the wheels in motion for James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh to team up in Miami.

A Heat team put together to win a title fell to 5-4.

"We're the best 5-4 team in the league," Wade said. "How about that? But we've got a lot of work to do."

Kevin Garnett had 16 points and 13 rebounds for Boston, which led by as many as 20.

James finished with 35 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, narrowly missing his second straight triple-double. Wade was held to eight points on 2-for-12 shooting.

The Heat got within 110-107 on Udonis Haslem's free throws with 13.3 seconds left, but Allen hit a pair of free throws to seal it.

The Celtics topped the Heat 88-80 in the season opener Oct. 26, and Miami insisted it had gotten better since then.

So, apparently, had Boston.

"Everybody just stepped in and did their job," Rivers said. "Tonight was the first night I thought we had complete trust in the next pass."

Allen hit seven 3-pointers for the 22nd time in his regular-season career, and there was nothing sneaky about the way he got open, either. It was as simple as Allen running to the open spot, and waiting to see if the Celtics could get the ball to him.

When they did, he made the Heat pay. His last 3 might have been the biggest - it put Boston up 102-89 midway through the fourth quarter, and the Celtics held on from there in a frantic finish.

"It's easier said than done," Allen said.

Haslem had 21 points and 10 rebounds for Miami, which got 15 points from Bosh and 13 from Eddie House. Nate Robinson added 12 for the Celtics, who moved to 7-2.

"You get to a point where you say you try to rush it, you try to rush the process," James said. "And we just can't do that. We're talented enough, we're going to win some games, we're going to win a lot of games. But we have to accept this process and understand that it's going to be one."

The Celtics wasted no time taking control, making nine of their first 15 shots. Some were downright spectacular: Glen Davis set a pick on House, giving Rondo a full head of steam to blow past Bosh for a highlight-caliber dunk and a 22-10 lead.

Even the breaks went Boston's way.

Midway through the second, Rondo tried a bullet pass down the center of the court in transition, only to have Wade get a hand on the ball and tip it off the backboard. Didn't matter - Davis, remarkably agile for someone listed at 289 pounds, was running at full steam, reached back and managed to get just enough of his paw on the ball to tip it in for a 39-29 Boston edge.

By halftime, it was 61-46, and a Heat defensive debacle that started Tuesday hadn't yet ended.

"No one's happy about it right now," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. "But it's only us that can make it get better."

In a 53-minute stretch of basketball at home, counting the overtime against Utah, the Heat's defensive numbers were just plain offensive. They gave up 145 points on 62 percent shooting over roughly the equivalent of a full game, which wouldn't be good enough to beat any NBA club.

And certainly not the defending Eastern Conference champs.

"Nov. 11, right now, we're not there," Spoelstra said.

When Miami made little runs, Boston had answers. When the Heat got within 32-28 in the second quarter, the Celtics held them to two field goals in the ensuing 5 1/2 minutes. When Wade got his first field goal of the night early in the third, Allen scored five points in about 90 seconds to push the Boston lead to 20. And when Haslem got Miami within 97-89 with 8:17 remaining, Robinson hit a runner in the lane, followed quickly by Allen's seventh 3-pointer of the night.

With that, a standing-room-only crowd soon began heading for the exits.

"There's no need to be frustrated," Bosh said. "We're nine games into the season and we can't play perfect basketball right off the bat. We're up against a lot. We just have to keep working. ... When it's all said and done, I think we'll be where we want to be."

Notes: Rondo's assist average rose to 14.9. ... From the odd stat department, when Davis plays, the Celtics are 9-0 against Miami. ... Heat F Mike Miller, who broke his right thumb during the preseason and needed surgery to repair the fracture and ligament damage, said he's hopeful of returning by Christmas. ... Celtics C Jermaine O'Neal did not dress, still dealing with left knee pain.

THE STAT: The Heat were just 3-for-16 from 3-point range.

TURNING POINT: After the Heat closed to within 32-28, the Celtics went on a 7-1 to regain control. They never were seriously threatened the remainder, holding a double-digit lead most of the way.

HOT: Allen made his first seven 3-pointers, finishing 7-for-9.

NOT: Wade was 2-for-12, missing all five of his 3-pointers.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: LeBron James had 35 points, 10 rebounds and nine assists, nearly recording his second straight triple-double.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Alex Rodriguez sat next to Heat owner Micky Arison.

GOOD MOVE: The Celtics took advantage of matchup problems with Paul Pierce and Nate Robinson in key stages. Pierce scored twice over the shorter Eddie House and Robinson had two big buckets in the later stages while being guarded by slower forwards.

BAD MOVE: The Heat's experiment with Joel Anthony as the starting center appears to be over. He played just eight minutes, losing out to the experienced Zydrunas Ilgauskas and forward Udonis Haslem.

ROOKIE WATCH: No rookies played

NOTABLE: Haslem scored a season-high 21 points off the bench on 9-for-10 shooting. He also grabbed 10 rebounds.
