The Toronto Raptors' slow start is hardly a surprise after the departure of Chris Bosh, but the Charlotte Bobcats certainly weren't expecting one following their first playoff appearance.

Charlotte hopes to deal the Raptors a sixth straight defeat while snapping its own three-game skid as the last-place teams meet Wednesday night in Toronto.

The Raptors (1-6) figured to have trouble replacing their all-time leading scorer and rebounder after Bosh left as a free agent to join Dwyane Wade and LeBron James in Miami.

Their biggest problem lately has been defense. During a five-game losing streak, opponents are averaging 110.0 points while shooting 50.1 percent.

"We just make the game hard for ourselves," forward Linas Kleiza said after Monday's 109-102 home loss to Golden State. "But you know I think it's going to get better. We couldn't stop the pick-and-roll - that was kind of the thing they picked us apart on."

The Bobcats (1-6) may be the perfect matchup for Toronto considering their offense ranks among the NBA's worst with 89.9 points per game. Just a few months after their postseason debut, they're in danger of their first 1-7 start since their expansion season in 2004-05.

Charlotte shot 39.8 percent during a 95-91 home loss to San Antonio on Monday night, including a combined 23.1 percent by leading scorers Gerald Wallace, Stephen Jackson and D.J. Augustin.

"D.J., Jack and Gerald going 9 of 39, I don't care who you're playing and you're going to have a tough time," coach Larry Brown said. "To be in the game with us shooting it that way and turning it over again, like we do, it's a miracle we had a chance."

Jackson had a team-high six turnovers, giving him 16 during Charlotte's three-game losing streak.

"Some nights I may have six turnovers, some nights I may have none," Jackson said. "(Monday) was one of those nights where we weren't getting it done. ... Hopefully there won't be too many like that."

The biggest offseason change to Charlotte's lineup was the departure of point guard Raymond Felton, who left via free agency. Augustin got off to a fast start as his replacement, but he's averaging 8.3 points on 33.3 percent shooting in his last four games.

The Raptors have attempted to fill Bosh's offensive void with six players averaging at least 10.0 points, but they're struggling to find solutions at the defensive end. Warriors guards Stephen Curry and Monta Ellis combined for 62 points Monday while shooting 22 of 38 from the field.

"By the time we got aggressive with our defense it was too late," Raptors coach Jay Triano said.

They also had problems on the glass against Golden State. While Reggie Evans averaged 13.0 rebounds in the first six games, he had six Monday as Toronto was outrebounded 42-32. Evans has been an offensive liability with 2.4 points per game on 23.8 percent shooting.

The Raptors have won their last two meetings with Charlotte, but Bosh powered both victories, averaging 27.5 points and 12.0 rebounds.

Toronto lost five straight three times last season, but the club hasn't dropped six in a row since a seven-game skid Feb. 27-March 13, 2009.

Jackson scores 20 points as Bobcats beat Raptors

TORONTO(AP) Stephen Jackson only got one fingertip on the ball, but that was all he needed for a game-clinching steal.

Jackson scored half of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and Gerald Wallace finished with 19 points and 14 rebounds to help the Charlotte Bobcats beat the Toronto Raptors 101-96 on Wednesday night, snapping a three-game losing streak.

"We still have a long way to go but I'm proud of them," Bobcats coach Larry Brown said. "We weren't feeling great at halftime and a couple of our players were kind of down. But the best way to overcome adversity is to play like (Jackson) and Tyrus (Thomas) did in the second half. They gave us a chance to win."

D.J. Augustin had 16 points and Thomas scored 12 of his 14 points in the fourth to help the Bobcats avoid a 1-7 start for the first time since their 2004-05 expansion season.

"If Tyrus plays like that every night it's going to be hard for us to lose to anybody," Jackson said.

Jackson stripped Toronto center Andrea Bargnani with five seconds left and the Bobcats clinging to a three-point edge, then sealed it with a pair of free throws.

"That's one of those plays where you hope you get it," Jackson said. "If you don't, you made a bad decision. If you do, you're the hero. He'd been killing us all game. I just wanted to make it uncomfortable. Thank God I was able to get my hand on the ball. It was a fingertip. I barely got my hands on it."

Watching nearby, Wallace was equally concerned about Jackson's efforts to stop Bargnani.

"I was just telling him 'Don't let him shoot,"' Wallace said. "That was my main thing. Run up there, jump in his shorts, do whatever you want to do, just don't let him shoot. We'll take a 3 from anybody else but him."

A frustrated Bargnani didn't want to dwell on his untimely turnover.

"I lost the ball," Bargnani said. "There's no more to describe. He tipped it away."

After losing their previous three games by a combined 14 points, coming out on the right side of a close one was relief for the Bobcats.

"It feels pretty good, especially for us to end the game on a defensive stop," Wallace said.

Boris Diaw and Gerald Henderson each had 10 for Charlotte.

Bargnani scored 23 points and Sonny Weems had 20 for the Raptors, who have lost six straight for the first time since a seven-game slide from Feb. 27 to March 13, 2009.

Amir Johnson had 16 points and nine rebounds and Jarrett Jack had 14 points for Toronto.

Tied 48-48 at the half, the Raptors got seven points from Weems in the third quarter to take a 74-69 lead into the fourth.

Toronto held its lead until Jackson hit a 3-pointer with 5:37 left, but Weems tied it at 87 with a jump shot on the next possession.

Jackson made a jumper and Thomas added a driving layup to give the Bobcats a four-point lead, 91-87 with 3:46 remaining.

A driving dunk by Raptors guard DeMar DeRozan cut it to 93-91 but the Raptors missed a chance to tie when Bargnani could only make one of two from the line.

Bargnani missed a potential game-tying 3-pointer with 38 seconds to play but drove for a layup that cut the deficit to one, 97-96. Thomas was fouled at the other end and made both free throws to put Charlotte up 99-96 with 12.7 seconds left.

Looking for the tie, Toronto came up empty when Jackson stole the ball from Bargnani on the wing and drained a pair of free throws, sending the crowd of 14,309 to the exits.

Toronto's Reggie Evans had 10 rebounds and two points before leaving with 5:46 left in the fourth after suffering a bruised left hip.

Notes: Toronto was without G Leandro Barbosa, who left Monday's loss to Golden State with a strained left shoulder, and C David Andersen (flulike symptoms). It's not known whether Barbosa will accompany the team on its weekend road trip to Orlando and Miami. ... Linas Kleiza started for the Raptors despite a sore Achilles' heel but played just 17 minutes. ... Evans has recorded double digits in rebounds five times in eight games, but has yet to top six points. ... Wallace has three double-doubles this season. ... Thomas had five of Charlotte's 13 blocks, with Wallace adding four. ... Augustin celebrated his 23rd birthday.

Bobcats-Raptors notebook

THE FACTS: On Wednesday night the Charlotte Bobcats notched their second victory of the season as they took down the Toronto Raptors 101-96 thanks to a late steal from Stephen Jackson. Jackson led six Bobcats in double-figures with 20 points in the game as Charlotte improved to 2-6 and the Raptors fell to 1-7 on the season.

QUOTABLE: "That strip can go either way. That's one of those plays where you hope you get it. If you don't, you made a bad decision. If you do, you're a hero. He [Andrea Bargnani] had been killing us all game and I just wanted to make it uncomfortable and I thank God I was able to get my hand on the ball."

THE STAT: The Bobcats finished the game with 13 blocked shots. They were very active under the hoop as Tyrus Thomas recorded five blocks while Gerald Wallace added four, both season-highs. The five blocks from Thomas matched the Raptors' team total.

TURNING POINT: Larry Brown decided to go with Thomas for the duration of the fourth and the move paid off. Thomas was everywhere in the final quarter, getting blocks, deflecting passes and hustling on the floor. He scored 12 of his 14 points in the quarter and hit four free throws down the stretch to keep the game out of reach for the Raptors.

QUOTABLE III: "I was just telling him, 'Don't let him shoot,' that was the main thing. 'Run up and jump in his shorts, whatever you want to do, just don't let him shoot.' We'll take a three from anyone else but him. I think Jack played great defense and we were able to get out with a win."

HOT: Wallace did a little bit of everything for the Bobcats, finishing with 19 points, 14 rebounds, five assists, a steal and four blocked shots.

NOT: After shooting 6-for-8 from the floor in the first half, Bargnani went ice-cold from the floor, connecting on just two of his 11 field goals in the second half before having the ball stripped by Jackson on the final possession.

NOTABLE: D.J. Augustin turned 23 on Wednesday and put in a solid night against the Raptors, finishing with 16 points and seven assists to go with three steals. Reggie Evans left the game midway through the fourth quarter with a bruised hip and did not return.
