Warriors-Pistons Preview

A stronger commitment to defense along with a favorable early schedule has helped the Golden State Warriors get off to their best start in 16 years.

With the schedule getting tougher and a five-game road trip beginning Sunday against the Detroit Pistons, first-year coach Keith Smart implores his team to continue to work hard defensively.

Golden State (4-1) will become the league's last team to play its second road game, and it has taken advantage by winning all four of its contests at Oracle Arena. The Warriors, off to their best start since the 1994-95 team began 5-0, won't have the benefit of playing much in front of the home crowd in the next three weeks, however, with nine of their next 12 games on the road.

"This is going to be our biggest test right here when we go on the road," guard Monta Ellis said after Friday's 85-78 win over Utah. "We have five games in seven days so it's a big test for us. It's the first time we're going on a road trip and there are some winnable games."

The first stop on the trip appears to be a winnable one, despite Golden State's recent road struggles against the Pistons.

The Warriors, who lost 104-95 at The Palace of Auburn Hills last season, have dropped three straight in Michigan and are 1-14 there since the 1994-95 season.

The Pistons (1-5), though, have had their share of problems this fall.

Detroit avoided its first 0-6 start since 1980 with Friday's 97-90 win over Charlotte, as Pistons coach John Kuester benched rebellious guard Rodney Stuckey and started Tracy McGrady at the point.

"I'm happy for the organization, but mostly I'm happy for the players," Kuester said. "Obviously, this has been a tough way to start the season, but these guys have kept playing hard."

Kuester decided not to play Stuckey, who ignored his coach in Wednesday's 94-85 loss to Atlanta, but said his fourth-year guard would be available against the Warriors. Stuckey averaged 23.0 points against Golden State last season, his second-best against any opponent.

Much of Stuckey's scoring success against the Warriors in 2009-10 could be attributed to the lack of defense played by former coach Don Nelson's club.

Golden State was last in the NBA in scoring defense at 112.4 points per game, but is dedicating itself defense under Smart, allowing an average of 102.6 points. The Warriors limited the Jazz to 39.5 percent shooting and held an opponent to its fewest points since Utah also scored 78 on Nov. 25, 2006.

"We have a saying 'D.T.W. - defense travels well,'" Smart said. "If you can lock into your defense, that's what they've done and that kept us in the game."

The addition of David Lee, acquired in an offseason trade with New York, has helped bolster the defense and improve the team's rebounding. The forward had 14 points and 15 rebounds Friday for his fourth double-double in five games.

The Warriors have outrebounded four of their first five opponents, and are averaging 46.6 rebounds per game. That's in stark contrast to last season, when they averaged a league-worst 38.4 rebounds and were outrebounded by an average of 9.7 per game.

Golden State should be able to control the glass against the Pistons, who have been outrebounded in four of six games and are averaging 38.5 boards per contest.

"We just have to play like we did (Friday)," said Ellis, who averages a team-best 28.6 points. "Also continue to play hard as a team with scrappy defense and come out with a successful road trip."

Hamilton, Stuckey lead Pistons over Warriors

AUBURN HILLS, Mich.(AP) Rodney Stuckey wasn't thinking about redemption on Sunday night.

He might have gotten some anyway.

Stuckey finished a tumultuous five-day stretch with 21 points and nine assists to help the Detroit Pistons beat the Golden State Warriors 102-97.

Stuckey's problems started early in the second half of Wednesday's loss in Atlanta. After he ignored coach John Kuester, he was benched for the rest of the game.

He remained on the sidelines for Friday's win over Charlotte - Detroit's first victory of the season - but was back in the starting lineup against Golden State.

"That doesn't matter now - this was just another game," Stuckey said. "The only thing on my mind tonight was to go out there and do my job."

Kuester agreed that the situation belonged in the past.

"It's done," he said. "We've moved on."

The win gave the Pistons two in a row as they head into a four-game, six-day road trip.

"When you are going to the West Coast, it is always important to have a good performance in your last home game," Kuester said. "I'm not sure this was beautiful basketball tonight, but we got another win, and two in a row feels good when we are heading west."

Golden State, which hasn't lost in four home games, is now 0-2 on the road.

"We need to learn how to win these games on the road," said Golden State coach Keith Smart. "It is tough to travel, but you have to be ready. I knew that team has a lot of pros who were going to get after us, and they did."

Richard Hamilton, who came off the bench against Charlotte after missing two games with a foot injury, finished with 27 points after moving back into the starting lineup.

"I knew Rip had been struggling a little, but I wasn't worried," Stuckey said. "Rip's a shooter, and he's going to go out there and shoot each and every game. We all knew he was going to get it going."

Charlie Villanueva added 16 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Detroit, while Tayshaun Prince scored 14.

Monta Ellis led Golden State with 24 points and Dorell Wright had 19.

"We still need to establish our identity on the road," said David Lee. "We haven't had much time to do that yet - this was only our second road game, and this was the first one that was close. We just had too many careless mistakes tonight. Fixing that will come with time."

The Warriors started the second half with an 18-5 run and led 76-73 going into the fourth quarter.

Hamilton, though, scored seven points in the first two minutes of the period to give Detroit a five-point advantage.

Stuckey and Ben Gordon both hit 3-pointers as the shot clock expired, keeping the Pistons ahead, but an Ellis jumper pulled the Warriors within 96-95 with 2:33 left.

Villanueva answered with a basket, and Stephen Curry's tying 3-pointer rattled in and out with 13 seconds left.

"I was right behind him when that went up, and I thought it was in," Lee said. "We'll take that shot from a great shooter any day of the week. I thought it was down."

NOTES: The Warriors missed 10 of 12 3-pointers in the first half, but Wright hit three straight to start the third quarter. ... Jason Maxiell, who averaged 18 minutes in Detroit's first four games, did not play due to coach's decision for the third time in a row. ... Ellis has scored at least 20 points in five of Golden State's six games, including 46 in the season opener. ... The game drew just 12,813 fans, the smallest Pistons crowd in several years.

THE FACTS: Guards Richard Hamilton and Rodney Stuckey combined for 48 points as the Detroit Pistons won their second straight game, 102-97, over the Golden State Warriors Sunday night at The Palace. Monta Ellis, who came in leading the league in scoring at 28.6 points per game, topped the Warriors with 24 points but they started a five-game road trip on a down note.

THE STAT: Charlie Villanueva 10 rebounds, David Lee 7. Pistons reserve forward Villanueva isn't known for his work around the glass but he held his own against onf of the league's premier rebounders despite playing 10 fewer minutes. That allowed the Pistons to match the Warriors, who came into the game fifth in the NBA in rebounding, with 46 boards apiece.

TURNING POINT: Pistons head coach John Kuester decided to revert to his usual starting backcourt of Stuckey and Hamilton. Stuckey, who was benched in Detroit's 97-90 victory over Charlotte Friday for disciplinary reasons, responded with 21 points and nine assists. Hamilton poured in a season-high 27 points. Ben Gordon had started the previous three games at shooting guard, including two that Hamilton missed with a foot injury.

QUOTABLE II: "What we need to do for our team is learn how to win these games on the road. We had a spell where we had too many turnovers, careless turnovers, at one time. We just need to clean that part up."

HOT: With three or four ball handlers on the floor most of the way, the Pistons had a season-high 27 assists. Stuckey set the tone but Gordon also looked to be a playmaker with Hamilton having a hot shooting night, contributing six assists while only taking six shots.

NOT: Curry shot just 3-for-12 from the field, with Stuckey and Will Bynum guarding him most of the way. A majority of his misses were on mid-range attempts. Curry shot 55 percent in his first three games this season.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Warriors forward Dorell Wright made three more 3-pointers Sunday and has a team-best 22 this season while making 53.7 percent of his attempts. Wright is getting plenty of good looks with the penetration ability of Ellis and Curry.

INSIDE THE ARENA: After regularly selling out the 22,076-seat Palace while making the Eastern Conference Finals six straight seasons, the Pistons have been hurting at the box office the last two seasons. The crowd of 12,813 was their smallest in at least eight seasons.

ROOKIE WATCH: Pistons reserve center Greg Monroe emulated Ben Wallace Sunday but not in a good way. Monroe looked like Wallace, the NBA's worst free throw shooter, by bricking six of his seven foul shots.

NOTABLE: Tracy McGrady, who started Detroit's previous game at point guard, saw just nine minutes of action and scored one point. Kuester felt McGrady didn't match up well with the Warriors' quick guards and wing players. ... Golden State scored 48 of its points in the paint, where Ellis did most of his damage. ... The Pistons head out to Portland to begin a four-game West Coast trip.
