Tom Thibodeau made quite an impact in his time as associate head coach of the Boston Celtics, forging a close relationship with Kevin Garnett along the way. It's why he landed his first head coaching job with the Chicago Bulls.

Thibodeau returns to Boston to face his former team for the first time when the Bulls and Celtics renew a rivalry that blossomed in the 2009 playoffs.

In Thibodeau's three seasons working under coach Doc Rivers, Boston (4-1) twice led the league in field-goal percentage defense and went to the NBA finals twice. Thibodeau earned a reputation as one of the top defensive coaches, and was hired by the Bulls (2-2) in the offseason as their 18th coach.

Garnett earned his lone defensive player of the year award in 2007-08 as Boston won its record 17th championship.

"Thibs brings a passion for defense, I think," Garnett said. "When you think of Tom Thibodeau and what's his strengths, he's obviously a defense guy. He watches an uncountable amount of film. He's a worker. He's a guy that loves his job. He does it with passion."

Garnett has been in the news for the wrong reason lately after Detroit's Charlie Villanueva posted on his Twitter account that Garnett called him a "cancer patient" during the Celtics' 109-86 win Tuesday.

The controversy may have been a reason why Garnett was limited to 13 points and eight rebounds in Wednesday's 105-102 overtime win over Milwaukee. He was whistled for a technical foul for the second straight night.

"I'm a passionate player, man," Garnett said. "With all these rules, I am trying my best to get out of situations. I am definitely trying not to invite them. But the game is passionate. And I play with a lot of energy for the 15 going on 16 years I've played this way."

Garnett is also being forced to log more minutes since the Celtics are short-handed in their frontcourt. Shaquille O'Neal will likely miss his third straight game with a bruised right knee while Kendrick Perkins is out until January with a knee injury.

Thibodeau will try to employ a defense that will slow down Paul Pierce, who scored 28 points Wednesday to surpass 20,000 for his career.

"That was an emotional moment for me. It was tough for me to swallow at that point," Pierce said. "You don't see that often that a player accomplishes the feat with one team."

This game also marks the renewal of the rivalry between point guards Rajon Rondo and Derrick Rose. Their matchup was the focal point of a memorable first-round series two seasons ago and won by the Celtics in seven games.

Both are off to strong starts in 2010-11. Rondo is leading the NBA with 16.4 assists per game while Rose is averaging 26.8 points to lead the Eastern Conference.

Thibodeau appeared to anger Bulls fans Thursday in a 120-112 home loss to New York. Rose had 24 points and 14 assists, but sat out the final 9:31 as the fans chanted "We want Rose!"

"The second unit I thought fought hard to close it, and I wanted to see what they could get out of it," Thibodeau said.

Boston and Chicago split four meetings last season.

Celtics and Bulls back to OT, Boston wins 110-105

BOSTON(AP) Tom Thibodeau knows what the Celtics can do when the game goes into overtime: He was Doc Rivers' assistant when they played six OTs in a three-game span against Chicago in the 2009 playoffs.

"I know they have a lot of weapons, they're experienced, they know how to work the game and they're hard to guard," the Bulls' rookie head coach said Friday night. "I think the thing that often gets overlooked with them is not only their individual greatness but their collective greatness and their willingness to share with each other."

Kevin Garnett chased down Joakim Noah and tipped the ball away from behind with 14 seconds left in overtime, and the Celtics held on to beat Chicago 110-105. It was the second consecutive overtime game for the Celtics, the first back-to-back OT games since they played three straight against the Bulls in the first round of the 2009 playoffs.

"We got some valuable experience in these overtimes, which is great," Boston's Paul Pierce said. "I thought we really kept our poise."

Garnett had 16 points and 10 rebounds, and he also drew an offensive foul on Derrick Rose with Boston nursing a three-point lead in overtime. Ray Allen, who scored 25 points, followed with a dunk on an assist from Pierce to make it a five-point game.

After Luol Deng tipped in Kyle Korver's airball, Chicago had a chance to cut it to one point when Noah tried to take off on a fast break. But Garnett ran him down and tipped the ball to Glen "Big Baby" Davis; he hit the foul shots to clinch it.

"He's a gazelle," Davis said. "He runs. He's long. I don't know what Joakim was thinking, but he was trying to make a play for his team, so I give him credit for that."

Noah had 26 points and 12 rebounds for Chicago. Deng scored 20 and Rose had 18 points and nine assists for Chicago, which lost its second straight game and fell to 0-2 on the road.

"I had a huge turnover at the end. I can't lose the ball in that situation," Noah said. "I think we're not there yet, but we're pretty close. We're only going to get better, and when we do, it's going to get real ugly for everybody who's talking real crazy. All the trash that people are talking right now is going to come back and haunt them. Because when it counts, we'll be ready."

Boston has won four in a row, and has not lost at home.

The Celtics led by as many as 16 points in the third, but Chicago cut it to six points late in the quarter and took the lead midway through the fourth when C.J. Watson hit a 3-pointer to give the Bulls an 82-81 lead. Boston opened a six-point lead before Deng hit a 3-pointer with 2 1/2 minutes left, then he hit another with 1:18 left in regulation to make it 96-96.

The Celtics had the ball with 35 seconds left and a chance to take the lead, but Pierce overthrew Allen, and Keith Bogans outran Allen to the loose ball, diving to the court and calling a timeout before he rolled out of bounds.

That gave Chicago the ball with 23.3 seconds left. Rose dribbled the clock down before trying to drive against Rondo, but the Celtics point guard went low and knocked the ball away; it bounced to Noah, but he couldn't gain control before the buzzer sounded.

Rondo scored 10 points with 11 assists - below his record-setting average of more than 16 in the first five games. Rivers said Rondo had a foot injury that he was monitoring; the trainer had said Friday morning that Rondo would not be able to play.

The crowd gave Thibodeau a warm welcome back, but the biggest cheer was for Brian Scalabrine, who spent five years in Boston and became a fan favorite as a bench player on the '08 champions.

In fact, a video of Scalabrine's scoring and Thibodeau's coaching from their Boston days got a louder reaction than the later one commemorating Pierce's 20,000th point as a Celtic. The other Boston players applauded Pierce, who remained on the bench and nodded.

Notes: The crowd gave a big cheer when the scoreboard showed the Miami Heat losing in the fourth quarter to the New Orleans Hornets. ... Davis drew two more charging fouls in the first half, giving him 11 for the season. The Celtics had 13 as a team coming into the game, compared to five for opponents. ... Shaquille O'Neal did not play for the third straight game because of a bruised right knee. Rivers said O'Neal was questionable for the road trip to Oklahoma City, Dallas, Miami and Memphis. ... Boston's Semih Erden and Chicago's Omer Asik, teammates on the Turkish national team, matched up in the low post in the first half.

THE FACTS: The Boston Celtics escaped with their second straight overtime win at the TD Garden edging the Chicago Bulls by a score of 110-105. Ray Allen led a balanced Boston offensive attack with 25 points, including a thunderous jam in the closing moments of overtime. Joakim Noah led the valiant Bulls in the defeat with 26 points and 11 rebounds. The Bulls erased a 16-point second half deficit to force overtime.

QUOTABLE: "I was trying to make a play. It was a big mistake. He reached on the rebound. I should have slowed it down. I felt we had numbers in transition. We have to get up a shot in that situation."

THE STAT: Chicago's offense was stifled for nearly the first six minutes of the second quarter, being held scoreless until Derrick Rose broke the ice with a layup at the 6:03 mark. Boston's suffocating defense held Chicago to 0-of-7 shooting with 4 turnovers over the scoring draught. The Celtics turned a four-point deficit into a 10-point lead by the time the run was over.

TURNING POINT: Down 3 in the closing seconds of overtime, Noah secured a rebound off a Paul Pierce missed jumper. Instead of looking for his All-Star point guard, Noah attempted to dribble up the open floor and attack the basket himself. Kevin Garnett was lurking however, and stripped the Bulls center from behind, allowing Glen Davis to scoop up the loose ball with 14 seconds remaining. Chicago was forced to foul Big Baby who hit both free throws, putting the game away for Boston.

HOT: Allen hit 9-of-12 shots from the field, including 3 of 5 from three-point range to put forth his best effort of the season for the Celtics with 26 points.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Bulls forward Taj Gibson continued his hot shooting ways with an 9-of-14 outing from the field. The USC alum is now hitting a sensational 64 percent of his field goals on the young season.

ROOKIE WATCH: Omer Asik and Semih Erden, two rookies hailing from Turkey saw limited floor time for Chicago and Boston respectively. Erden had the more impressive line of the evening, contributing 2 points and 3 rebounds in 10 minutes of action.

NOTABLE: Bulls forward Brian Scalabrine received a standing ovation from the crowd, accompanied by chants of SCAL-A-BR-INE upon entering the game for Chicago in the first quarter. Scalabrine played five seasons in Boston. A video tribute of Scalabrine and former Celtic associate head coach (Tom) Thibodeau was played as well on the TD Garden jumbotron. Davis drew two more offensive fouls, bringing his season total up to 11 charges taken. Rajon Rondo had his third double-double of the year, with 15 points and 10 assists.
