Celtics-Pistons Preview

As good as he was distributing the ball last season, Rajon Rondo has been even better this fall.

The fifth-year point guard hopes to continue that trend as the visiting Boston Celtics try to keep the Detroit Pistons winless Tuesday night.

Rondo was fourth in the NBA with 9.8 assists per game in 2009-10, helping Boston reach the NBA finals, and he's leading the league by a wide margin in that category this season at 16.7.

He had a career-best 24 assists - four shy of Bob Cousy's franchise record from 1959 - along with 10 points and 10 rebounds to record his fifth career triple-double in a 105-101 win over New York on Friday.

"It means a lot, but I'll try and catch him," Rondo said of coming close to Cousy's record. "(It's) all about the teammates. If they don't make the shots, we don't get team assists."

Rondo's leadership on the floor helped Boston (2-1) top 90 points for the first time this season. Paul Pierce had 25 points and 14 rebounds while Kevin Garnett added 24 points and 10 boards.

"If you're not ready, he'll embarrass you. He'll hit you right in the head with the ball," said Garnett, who shot 12 of 17 after going a combined 7 for 19 in the previous two games. "He'll see something you didn't see, but he'll make you see it."

Boston will try to put up similar offensive numbers against Detroit (0-3), which has given up at least 101 points in every game this season.

However, the Celtics probably will be without Shaquille O'Neal, who had 10 points and seven rebounds in 23 minutes Friday but suffered a knee bruise. He missed his second straight practice Monday and is unlikely to play Tuesday. While averaging 20.7 minutes in three starts, O'Neal is averaging 8.7 points and 5.3 rebounds.

Jermaine O'Neal, who missed Friday's game with a sore left knee, returned to practice Monday and will make the trip. Coach Doc Rivers said he could see more playing time after conditioning issues limited him to 25 minutes the first two games.

Boston will try to extend the Pistons' worst start since opening 0-4 in 1999-2000. Detroit blew a 21-point, third-quarter lead against Chicago on Saturday in a 101-91 defeat.

Ben Gordon scored all 21 of his points in the first half and Detroit shot 4 of 21 in the fourth quarter while being outscored 34-9. It was an especially difficult defeat after losing 105-104 at home to Oklahoma City the previous night on a late layup.

"Playing like strangers and not executing crisply really hurt us," coach John Kuester said after his team committed 18 turnovers for a second straight game. "We're not taking care of the ball and remembering the things that we did in the first half."

Despite his poor second half Saturday, Gordon seems to be making early amends after averaging a career-low 13.8 points while battling injuries last season for Detroit - his first after being signed to a five-year, $55 million deal. Gordon has scored 53 points the last two games while shooting 61.5 percent.

Boston has won seven of the last nine meetings, including four of five in Detroit.

Rondo brilliant as Celtics beat Pistons 109-86

AUBURN HILLS, Mich. (AP) Paul Pierce stood in the corner with the ball and paused a little longer than he needed to, as if daring the Detroit Pistons to come out and guard him. Then he calmly made another open shot to give Boston a 20-point lead.

It was that kind of night for the Celtics. Even without Shaquille O'Neal, Boston rolled past Detroit 109-86 on Tuesday night, executing its offense brilliantly against the downtrodden Pistons. Pierce scored 21 points, and Rajon Rondo added 17 assists.

And Boston's team totals were just as impressive.

"There's not a coach in America who wouldn't take 33 assists and eight turnovers," coach Doc Rivers said.

Rondo had a triple-double with 24 assists Friday night against New York, and his big night Tuesday gave him 67 assists through Boston's first four games. The way Rondo was playing, the Celtics didn't even need O'Neal, who sat out the game because of a bruised knee.

Boston hardly missed him against the undersized Pistons, who are off to their first 0-4 start since November 1999.

Detroit lost forward Jonas Jerebko in the preseason to a torn Achilles' tendon, and 6-foot-11, 205-pound Austin Daye has been playing power forward. Daye scored 16 points, one of five Pistons in double figures, but Detroit's defense couldn't contain Rondo. The Boston point guard helped his team shoot 52 percent from the field, and the game was never really in doubt in the fourth quarter.

"He's unbelievable. He played the perfect floor game tonight," Pierce said. "He had 17 assists and no turnovers. You can't get any better than that."

Rondo also scored nine points, and Kevin Garnett added 22.

"We knew we had an advantage with Kevin in the post, so we were going to try to exploit that," Rivers said. "They didn't try to do much trapping, and the few times they did, we did a great job of moving the ball to the open man."

Charlie Villanueva scored 17 points for Detroit, which played without Richard Hamilton, who was out with a sore right foot.

O'Neal, who didn't make the trip, missed two straight practices since bruising his right knee against the Knicks. Jermaine O'Neal started and scored 12 points, and rookie Semih Erden made his debut for Boston. The Turkish 7-footer entered in the first quarter and quickly blocked two shots. He then scored his first NBA points on a breakaway dunk in the second that led to a Detroit timeout and put Boston ahead 39-28.

The Pistons were competitive in their first three games but fell behind 16-5 early in this one. Rondo made a 3-pointer to end the first half, giving Boston a 57-44 lead, and the Celtics poured it on in the third quarter. After his long pause in the corner, Pierce made a 3-pointer to put the Celtics up 86-66 and went back down the court shaking his head.

Detroit finished with only 13 assists, four fewer than Rondo.

"It starts with us in this locker room but it goes to everybody else as well," Detroit's Tayshaun Prince said. "When you're 0-4, you don't just look at the team, you've got to look at everybody as a whole."

Pierce needs 23 points to reach 20,000 for his career and will have a chance at that milestone when the Celtics host Milwaukee on Wednesday night.

Notes: Rivers had a brief dispute with referee Bob Delaney in the first quarter after Glen Davis was called for a technical foul. Rivers felt Delaney was misapplying the league's new guidelines against complaining. ... Rondo has 2,211 assists as a Celtic. He moved past Sam Jones (2,209) into 13th place on the team's career list. ... Boston made all 18 of its free throws.

THE FACTS: Kevin Garnett had 22 points and Rajon Rondo supplied 17 assists as the Boston Celtics rolled to an easy victory over the winless Detroit Pistons Tuesday night at The Palace. The Celtics, who also received 21 points from Paul Pierce, led by as much as 23 points and never trailed.

QUOTABLE: "He's just playing a perfect floor game out there. I look at the stat sheet - 17 assists, no turnovers. He just knows the game, he knows the spots, he knows how to get guys the ball. He's just being a great floor general out there."

THE STAT: 33-8. The Celtics' assist-to-turnover ratio spoke of how well they moved the ball. Rondo's 17 assists were four more than the entire Pistons team. He has 41 assists in the last two games and a league-leading 16.8 average.

TURNING POINT: With Pistons point guard Rodney Stuckey getting a rest, the Celtics went on a 10-2 run to start the second quarter. That gave Boston a 41-28 advantage and the Pistons never threatened again. Detroit was playing without backup point guard Will Bynum and starting guard Richard Hamilton and its lack of healthy ballhandlers led to poorly executed offensive sets and defensive breakdowns.

QUOTABLE II: "If you don't have nothing nice to say, then don't say it at all. When a fan starts to talk about me or one of my teammates, I will let him know, I will respond."
-- Pistons forward Tayshaun Prince, who yelled at a heckling fan after getting taken out of the game during the fourth quarter.

HOT: Garnett has scored 46 points on 21-for-29 shooting over the last two games after scoring just 19 points combined during the Celtics' first two games.

NOT: It's 1999 all over again but the Pistons aren't in a partying mood. They are off to an 0-4 start for the first time since the 1999-2000 season. Their record for most losses to start the season is seven, which they've done twice (1980-81 and 1962-63).

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Charlie Villanueva is putting up solid numbers off Detroit's bench. He's averaging 14.5 points and 4.8 rebounds.

INSIDE THE ARENA: There were a couple of dynamic Detroit rookies courtside, but Greg Monroe (0-for-6 from the field) wasn't one of them.

Lions defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh sat near the Boston bench and running back Jahvid Best was right behind him. Safety Louis Delmas, defensive end Kyle Vanden Bosch and center Dominic Raiola were also courtside.

ROOKIE WATCH: With Shaquille O'Neal out with a knee injury, Turkish rookie Semih Erden made his NBA debut for Boston. He had a modest two points and three rebounds in 15 minutes but coach Doc Rivers liked Erden's defense, which included two blocks.

NOTABLE: Rondo moved past Sam Jones into 13th place on the Celtics' all-time assists list. He has 2,211, two more than Jones collected. ... Tracy McGrady continues to struggle. He played eight scoreless minutes and has two points in 45 minutes for the Pistons. ... Boston made all 18 of its free throws. ... Pistons forward Austin Daye tied his career high with 16 points.
