After acquiring LeBron James and Chris Bosh, the Miami Heat might have expected an instant boost to an offense that ranked among the league's worst last season. So far, the presence of those stars is paying off more at the other end of the court.

The Heat will try to follow up their best defensive effort of the season by winning their third in a row when they visit the surprisingly unbeaten New Jersey Nets on Sunday afternoon.

After falling 88-80 in Tuesday's season opener at Boston, Miami bounced back with a 97-87 win in Philadelphia the following night. The Heat then produced a stunning rout of Southeast Division rival Orlando in Friday's home opener.

The Heat (2-1) limited the Magic to 30.4 percent shooting overall and a 4-for-24 performance from 3-point range en route to a 96-70 win.

"Every night is not going to be like this," forward Udonis Haslem said. "But we had an unbelievable focus. We wanted to fly around, use our speed, our quickness and our athleticism."

The stifling effort gave Miami a league-best average of 81.7 points allowed through its first three games. Last season, the Heat gave up the second-fewest points per game in the NBA at 94.2.

"The guys now can't go back on this," coach Erik Spoelstra said. "They've shown me what we're capable of defensively and I will hold them to this standard now in terms of the effort."

The offense, meanwhile, has yet to take off in earnest. While Dwyane Wade has surpassed 25 points in each of the last two games, James hasn't topped 16 in either of those contests after scoring 31 in the opener. Bosh has yet to exceed 15 points in a game.

It might be surprisingly difficult for the Heat to break out against the Nets, who are 2-0 for the first time in eight seasons.

New Jersey averaged a league-low 92.4 points during its franchise-worst 12-70 campaign in 2009-10, but has topped 100 in each of its comeback victories this season.

The Nets trailed by seven with 1:40 to go in a season-opening, 101-98 victory over Detroit on Wednesday, then rallied from eight points down in the final 3:41 of a 106-100 win against Sacramento on Friday.

Devin Harris scored six of his 21 points during a 17-3 run to put away the Kings, while Brook Lopez scored a team-best 29. Both players have exceeded 20 points to help the Nets start strong on their season-opening four-game homestand at their temporary new home, the Prudential Center in Newark.

"It says we're a team of a lot of heart but that's not something we want to make a habit," Harris said. "It's good to know we can make these comebacks."

New Jersey won four in a row to open the 2002-03 season but didn't record its third win in 2009-10 until Dec. 30. To earn a third victory Sunday, they'll have to overcome their struggles in this series.

Miami held New Jersey below 90 points while sweeping last season's four meetings. The Nets have also dropped six of seven at home to the Heat.

These teams will meet again Saturday night in Miami.

Heat end Nets' unbeaten start with easy victory

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) Dwyane Wade studied the sheet of paper in front of him, wondering if there was a mistake.

"Is this first-half stats?" Wade asked. "Nine shots?"

"That's the whole game," LeBron James answered.

Wade doesn't need to shoot much anymore, not since James and Chris Bosh joined him to form a potential powerhouse in Miami.

James scored 20 points, Bosh and Wade were close behind, and the Heat ended the New Jersey Nets' unbeaten start with a 101-78 victory Sunday.

Bosh finished with 18 points and Wade added 17, both getting most of them in Miami's dominant first half before sitting out the fourth quarter. James played a little of the final period and added seven rebounds and seven assists.

"The balance is what we are here together for," Wade said, "to have an opportunity to make the game easy on everyone and we're doing it. We're playing great team basketball and we're still not where we want to be, but we're making sure everyone gets an opportunity."

It was the most impressive offensive performance yet for the Heat, who have won three straight since beginning their new era with a loss in Boston on opening night. Miami shot 68 percent in the first half, when its Big Three combined for 41 points - one fewer than New Jersey - and the stats only lowered when the reserves took over toward the end.

Bosh was 8 of 10 from the field, determined to be more aggressive after he struggled in two of Miami's first three games.

"When I watch other games and I'm not aggressive, we don't do as well on that certain possession, we either turn the ball over or we don't get a good shot because we're fighting the shot clock," he said.

Brook Lopez scored 20 points and rookie Derrick Favors had 13 points and 13 rebounds in the Nets' first loss this season before new owner Mikhail Prokhorov, who watched his third game this week before heading back to Russia.

The Nets followed their 12-70 finish from last season by opening with victories over Detroit and Sacramento - an especially good start since they set an NBA record by dropping their first 18 games of 2009-10.

But those are lottery teams. Miami is a championship contender.

The Heat were coming off their first big victory, overpowering rival Orlando 96-70 on Friday night in their home opener. Coach Erik Spoelstra said before Sunday's early start he hoped there would be no hangover.

Nothing to worry about.

Even with James picking up a pair of early fouls, the Heat made 10 of 14 shots (71 percent) in the first quarter, building a double-digit lead less than halfway through the period en route to a 29-18 cushion after one.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas, who followed James from Cleveland to Miami, started the second quarter with a flurry, and the lead was up to 18 after a dunk by James. The Nets couldn't do much to cut into it and the Heat led 58-42 at halftime.

"I told my team during the course of the year that there will be two or three or four games where you're not very good, and this was one of them," Nets coach Avery Johnson said. "We weren't good from the start. We were stuck in the mud, we were stuck in second gear."

James made his first visit to a team he met with during free agency. He admitted Sunday he would change some things about the process if he had the chance - he didn't specify what they were - but reiterated he's comfortable he made the right decision.

The Nets were the first team to sit down with James and believed the new direction they promised under Prokhorov gave them a chance. James praised the organization before the game but fans apparently haven't forgiven, booing the former crowd favorite during introductions and the first few times he touched the ball - though there were loud cheers when he threw down a couple of powerful dunks.

James said he considered that the NBA's great new show could have been based in New Jersey.

"On the way to the game, I even mentioned it to Chris, just saying 'This is a point where we could have ended up at," James said. "But at the end of the day, we're the Miami Heat team, we're the Miami Heat franchise and we have a goal."

Carlos Arroyo had 12 points for the Heat, who broke 100 points for the first time and finished at 54 percent from the field. Eddie House finished with 11 and fellow reserve Ilgauskas scored 10.

"When they get everyone involved like that they are obviously a tough team to beat. They got it going against us tonight," Nets forward Joe Smith said. "Defensively, they do a great job of clogging the paint and making you take tough shots from the perimeter. You just have to find a way to get the easy looks and tonight we just didn't do that."

NOTES: Prokhorov was sitting in his suite next to Roman Abramovich, the Russian who owns the Chelsea soccer club. ... The game drew an announced crowd of 17,086. With the Heat in town, parking spots that usually go for $20 or $25 were $30 on Sunday. ... News of the Nets' move apparently didn't reach the Heat's game notes, which still lists two games in East Rutherford this season. ... The Heat haven't allowed a field goal to a starting forward in the last two games.

THE FACTS: The Miami Heat cruised to a 101-78 victory over the New Jersey Nets in a Sunday matinee at the Prudential Center. LeBron James (20 points, seven rebounds, seven assists), Chris Bosh (18 points) and Dwyane Wade (17 points and seven assists) starred in the win. "This balance is awesome," Wade said. Brook Lopez (20 points, five rebounds) and rookie Derrick Favors (13 points and 13 rebounds) played well in spurts for the Nets.

QUOTABLE: "We were stuck in mud. We were stuck in second gear."

-- Nets coach Avery Johnson, discussing the blowout, but also flashing an acute and perhaps unintentional knowledge of Northern New Jersey's geography and roads.

THE STAT: The Heat's big three were so efficient converting from the field and getting to the line, they needed only 31 field goals to score 55 points. "Wait, is this first half stats?" Wade jokingly asked James while looking at the box score upon their arrival in the postgame interview room.

TURNING POINT: The opening tip. The Heat jumped out to a 15-4 lead and never looked back.

QUOTABLE II: "On the way to the game, I even mentioned it to Chris [Bosh], just saying, 'this [Newark] was a point where we could've ended up at'. D-Wade, he decided to take the second bus. I would've told him the same."

-- James, on considering playing in New Jersey during free agency. One would be remiss not to point out that it seemed like LeBron was mixing metaphors here.

HOT: Bosh, whose full repertoire scoring the ball was on display. "[The] basket just looked bigger," he said.

NOT: The Nets' starting forwards, Travis Outlaw and Joe Smith, failed to score.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Fantasy owners in efficiency-heavy leagues should start treating the big three like a bubbling, triangular volcano that plays basketball. There will be many matchups like this one where an overmatched team yields solid stats with few fantasy negatives, especially when James cuts down on his turnovers.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Welterweight boxer Zab Judah and international soccer star Thierry Henry sat courtside. Henry's New York Red Bulls won 1-0 without him last night against the San Jose Earthquakes in a first round playoff match. Henry, nursing a knee injury, said he hoped to play in the fixture's return leg ... Public Address impresario Gary Sussman opted for a Muhammad Ali reference -- "float like a butterfly!" -- when Terrence Williams tossed in a high-arcing shot in the paint late in the first quarter, and noted that a Jordan Farmar 3-pointer was "from the Farmar's Market"... Nets owner Mikhail Prokhorov attended his third consecutive home game at the Prudential Center...If the "Name that Tune" gimmick on the jumbotron is any indication, multiple Nets are very big Michael Jackson fans...

GOOD MOVE: Heat coach Erik Spoelstra called on Zydrunas Ilgauskas with just under five minutes remaining in the first quarter. The Lithuanian big man went on a personal 6-0 run -- an open eighteen-footer, a tip-in, and a layup off of a nice feed from James -- to extend the Miami lead to 35-18 early in the second quarter.

BAD MOVE: Whoever decided the Heat should start with games in Boston and Philadelphia, fly home for a home opener, and then fly back to the northeast for a Sunday afternoon game in Newark. Not that it had any negative effect on the outcome...

ROOKIE WATCH: Favors struggled finishing around the rim at times, but his motor was a bright spot for the Nets and his aggressiveness on the glass helped keep the game from being a complete blowout after a single quarter.

NOTABLE: On the same afternoon that James shot down any possible interest in dressing up as Snooki from the "Jersey Shore" for Halloween, reality-TV starlet and celebutante Kim Kardashian sat courtside ... The crowd booed James consistently whenever he touched the ball early in the game ... Reporters were antsy to continue peppering James with questions about his free agency process and decision. James seemed at ease while handling the pregame queries. "If I had a do-over, I'd probably do it a little bit differently," he said of his one-hour TV special, "The Decision" ... Chris Bosh appeared to check his fingernail after driving past Kris Humphries for a dunk midway through the second quarter ... It was easy to get the feeling that the Heat didn't feel very challenged by the Nets early in the third quarter, as Carlos Arroyo let out a playful playground-styled "haha!", before swinging a no-look pass up to the top of the key, and then -- confidence brimming -- draining a corner 3-pointer on the subsequent possession...
