Timberwolves-Grizzlies Preview

After splitting their first two games, the Minnesota Timberwolves are feeling confident.

That could change when they hit the road for the first time this season.

One of the NBA's worst teams away from home last season, the Timberwolves try for a second straight victory Saturday night against the Memphis Grizzlies.

Coming off a 15-win season and one-point opening-night loss to Sacramento, Minnesota beat Milwaukee 96-85 on Friday. Michael Beasley had 21 points with 10 rebounds while Kevin Love added 17 and 16 for the Timberwolves, who have not started 2-1 since 2006-07.

Rookie Wes Johnson added 12 points off the bench to help the Timberwolves overcome a 37.6-percent shooting effort.

"We got a lot of contributions from a lot of people," coach Kurt Rambis told the Timberwolves' official website. "That's what I like to see."

Though Minnesota didn't record its second victory last season until its 17th game, this squad appears confident it won't take that long this time.

"It's an attitude and the way we approach the game," Love said. "At every position we have guys that can play."

Love and the Timberwolves need to be at their best during a daunting three-game trip that also includes stops at Miami and Orlando. Minnesota allowed 112.4 points per contest while going 5-36 on the road last season with only New Jersey's 4-37 mark away from home being worse.

The Timberwolves have lost 12 straight road games since winning 91-88 against Miami - Beasley's former club - on Feb. 23.

Though Minnesota has dropped two in a row at Memphis, the Timberwolves won 109-102 in the teams' most recent meeting Feb. 6. They also could benefit from the addition of Beasley, who has recorded 38 points and 17 rebounds in his first two games with the Timberwolves.

Beasley also has played well in Memphis, averaging 25.0 points in two games while with the Heat.

The Grizzlies rebounded from a 119-104 season-opening loss to Atlanta with a 91-90 upset in Dallas on Friday. Rudy Gay had 21 points, O.J. Mayo added 20 and Marc Gasol had 10 with 15 rebounds after missing the opener with a sprained ankle.

Memphis won despite shooting 38.8 percent. The Grizzlies shot 51.5 percent while going 3-1 against Minnesota last season.

Gay had 21 points and Mayo 20 as the Grizzlies shot a season-high 58.5 percent in a 135-110 win over the Timberwolves in their last meeting at FedEx Forum on Jan. 15.

Gay, who has scored 21 in each of the first two games this season, has averaged 22.7 points on 58.3 percent shooting in his last three contests against the Timberwolves.

It's uncertain if Memphis forward Zach Randolph will miss a second straight game after he bruised his lower back in the first half Wednesday.

Mayo helps Memphis beat Minnesota 109-89

MEMPHIS, Tenn. (AP) O.J. Mayo and the Memphis Grizzlies had a sound defensive strategy and, wow, did it ever work against the sloppy Minnesota Timberwolves.

Mayo scored 29 points and the Grizzlies had a franchise-record 22 steals in a 109-89 victory against Minnesota on Saturday night.

"We just wanted to be aggressive on the ballhandlers. Make it tough for them to bring the ball up court," said Memphis guard Mike Conley, who had 14 points, seven steals, and matched his career high with 11 assists. "And when their bigs got it, just try to clamp down on it as soon as possible, and hit them from different sides where they weren't looking and not expecting it."

Rudy Gay added 25 points and Darrell Arthur scored 18 for Memphis, which has won two of its first three games for the first time since the 2005-06 season, the last time the team went to the playoffs.

Wayne Ellington led the Timberwolves with 15 points, and Kevin Love had 14 points and 13 rebounds. Sebastian Telfair scored 12.

Minnesota finished with 30 turnovers and shot 35 percent from the field.

"I feel like we were a disgrace to the game of basketball," said Michael Beasley, who turned it over six times. "We had 30 turnovers. Thirty turnovers, man. That's not basketball. That's not team basketball. That's not basketball at all. Everything we worked on since training camp just went out the window. Defensively. Offensively. We didn't play as a team. It was just bad from every aspect of the game."

Mayo's dunk with 4:36 left extended the Grizzlies' lead to 100-79 and was set up by Conley's record-breaking steal, No. 20 for the game.

Memphis got off to a fast start and maintained a double-digit lead through most of the first half, carrying a 59-46 edge into the break. Mayo had 19 at intermission, including a 3-pointer as time ran out in the half.

Love had 10 points in the first half and got some offensive help from Ellington in the third, but the Timberwolves, coming off their first win of the season, couldn't sustain any sort of momentum.

"We had the energy before the game, but once the game started, I think we didn't set the tone for the rest of the game," Love said.

Memphis coach Lionel Hollins said his team's ability to control the game was based on the defense that not only contributed to the franchise record for steals, but also disrupted the Timberwolves' offense.

"I think it's effort," he said. "It's getting back to what we do. ... We had 32 deflections and nine times we had three stops in a row. We had some consistency with our effort."

NOTES: The game featured the league's youngest and least-experienced teams. The Grizzlies are the least experienced (2.6 years to 2.7 for Minnesota), while the Timberwolves have an average age of 24 years and 84 days, compared to Memphis' 24 years, 225 days. ... Memphis F Zach Randolph missed his second straight game with a right hip contusion. Randolph was injured in the first quarter of Wednesday's season opener against the Atlanta Hawks. ... Memphis now hits the road for a West Coast swing, playing four games in five nights. ... Memphis rookie G Greivis Vasquez saw his first action, playing the final three minutes. ... It was the first road game this season for Minnesota, which was 5-36 away from home last season.

THE FACTS: Memphis had a franchise-record 22 steals as Minnesota committed a whopping 30 turnovers in the Grizzlies, 109-89, victory Saturday night. The Grizzlies picked up their second straight win to improve to 2-1 for the first time since the 2005-06 season, which was the last time they made the playoffs.

QUOTABLE: "After the first game, I had lost sleep just because we lost. I wasn't even tired after the game, like I didn't give it all that I had in me. I don't want to feel like that ever again.''
- Grizzlies guard O.J. Mayo, who scored a game-high 29 points to go with five assists and seven rebounds.

THE STAT: Grizzlies' point guard Mike Conley was the catalyst behind the team's hawking defensive effort. Conley tied his franchise record with seven of the team's 22 steals The Grizzlies previous team record for steals in a game was 19 which was last reached March 9, 2004 against San Antonio.

TURNING POINT: For the most part, the Grizzlies put this one away in the first quarter when they used a 19-0 run to take a 23-4 lead. It was a lead that never got below double digits.

HOT: Because of injuries, Memphis third-year forward Darrell Arthur has been inserted into the starting lineup for all three games this season, and he's made the most of those opportunities. Starting for center Marc Gasol in the season opener, Arthur scored a career-high 19. The last two games he's started for forward Zach Randolph, scoring 14 at Dallas and 18 against Minnesota.

NOT: The injuries to Gasol and Randolph were a chance for second-year center Hasheem Thabeet to show his improvement, but instead, the 7-2 player has given the Grizzlies virtually nothing. Through three games, Thabeet has a total of six rebounds and three blocked shots while scoring just one point.

FANTASY SPOTLIGHT: Conley was a stat sheet stuffer with 14 points, 11 rebounds, seven steals and seven assists.

NOTABLE: So far this season, Grizzlies forward Rudy Gay is earning the $84 million contract he signed this summer. With his 25 points against the Timberwolves, Gay has topped the 20-point mark in all three games.
