Bucks-Timberwolves Preview

Despite talk of contraction, the Minnesota Timberwolves expect to remain part of the NBA for years to come.

That includes Friday night, when they look to bounce back from a season-opening loss and avoid a third consecutive defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks.

Looking for a way to solve the NBA's current financial woes, commissioner David Stern brought up the idea of eliminating a team or teams last week. Despite five straight losing seasons and no playoff appearances since 2004, the Timberwolves are unlikely to be a candidate for removal if the league went that route while negotiating a new collective bargaining agreement.

"I can say that Minnesota is not one of the teams that would be contracted, nor do we expect that in the future," said owner Glen Taylor, the chairman of the NBA's board of governors.

That leaves the Timberwolves to focus on attaining their first win after falling 117-116 to Sacramento at home Wednesday. Former Buck Luke Ridnour had 20 points and six assists as Minnesota remained competitive despite the Kings making 45.9 percent of their shots and going 35 of 47 from the free-throw line.

"In this league, you've got to play defense," said Ridnour, a starter in Minnesota after averaging 10.4 points and 4.0 assists backing up Brandon Jennings in Milwaukee last season.

Minnesota forward Kevin Love hopes to see more time after recording 11 points and 10 rebounds in 23 minutes. He played less than 9 minutes in the second half because coach Kurt Rambis preferred reserve Anthony Tolliver's energy and defense.

Love said after practice Thursday that he and Rambis are fine, and Rambis said he spoke to Love in the morning to make clear he had no "hidden agenda" or "loss of faith" in Love.

Tolliver had 14 points and seven rebounds in 28 minutes.

"(Rambis has) made it obvious to everybody that if you play hard, you're going to play and if you play defense, you're going to play," Tolliver said.

Love, who averaged career highs of 14.0 points and 11.0 rebounds last season, had 17 and 12 in a 127-94 loss at Milwaukee in the teams' last meeting Jan. 23.

The Bucks are also looking for their first win after falling 95-91 at New Orleans on Wednesday.

Filled with high expectations after its playoff season since 2005-06, Milwaukee led by five late in the third quarter before the Hornets closed the period with an 11-0 run.

Back after wrist and elbow injuries limited him to 69 games last season, Andrew Bogut had 15 points and 15 rebounds but went 3 for 10 from the free-throw line.

"We can't turn on the switch when we're down and we have to scramble to win," said Drew Gooden, who had 15 points and 11 boards in his Bucks debut.

Coach Scott Skiles' club now gets to face a Minnesota team that averaged 83.0 points while losing both meetings last season.

Bogut had 17 points and 10 rebounds in Milwaukee's second victory in 11 trips to Minnesota, 87-72 on Nov. 6. The 7-footer has averaged 18.3 points and 10.7 boards in his last three road games against the Timberwolves.

Carlos Delfino, who had 24 points on 9-of-11 shooting against the Timberwolves in January, scored 19 on Wednesday.

Timberwolves beat Bucks for 1st win of season

MINNEAPOLIS (AP) It was a clank-fest at Target Center on Friday night.

The misses only seemed to make the Timberwolves hungrier, and Minnesota devoured the rebounds and turned up the defensive pressure on the Milwaukee Bucks to compensate.

The Bucks, on the other hand, hung their heads and wilted as they watched shot after shot miss the mark.

Michael Beasley had 21 points and 10 rebounds and the Timberwolves outrebounded Milwaukee 62-39 in a 96-85 victory on Friday night.

Kevin Love added 17 points and 16 rebounds for the Timberwolves (1-1), who certainly needed a win with a daunting road trip to Memphis, Miami and Orlando on the horizon.

"It's an attitude and the way we approach the game on the defensive end," said Love, whose Wolves bounced back from a disappointing home loss to Sacramento on Wednesday. "At every position we have guys that can play."

Corey Maggette scored 23 points for the Bucks, who shot just 36 percent, including 3 for 20 from 3-point range.

The Timberwolves weren't exactly sharp shooters themselves at 38 percent, but their 26-9 advantage in second-chance points made all the difference.

"It was almost like (the Timberwolves) just said 'OK we're not making shots tonight, so we're just going to go to the board.' And they absolutely dominated us," Bucks coach Scott Skiles said. "(We were) very soft, nailed to the ground. I looked at a bunch of clips at halftime, we were just, you know - really, really poor effort."

Luke Ridnour had 13 points, seven assists and six rebounds against his former team and put the exclamation point on the victory by hooking up with Corey Brewer for a jaw-dropping alley-oop with 1:30 to play.

Ridnour spent the previous two seasons in Milwaukee, and Bucks coach Scott Skiles lauded him before the game for the work he did mentoring Brandon Jennings during his rookie season last year.

The Wolves signed him to a four-year, $16 million deal in the offseason in hopes that he could do the same for second-year guard Jonny Flynn. But Ridnour has been forced into a starting role early because of Flynn's hip surgery, which is expected to keep him out well into November.

The teacher went at the student early on Friday night. Ridnour scored six of the first nine points for Minnesota. The young Buck didn't take long to respond, blazing to the basket and getting to the line to score 10 points in the first quarter.

After that initial burst, though, Jennings disappeared. He scored just four points the rest of the way, and the Bucks fell behind by 17 points midway through the third period.

"He's a great player," Ridnour said of Jennings. "He's going to have a great career and season, but we did a good job just maintaining on all their guys."

Milwaukee started the third period with 11 misses in its first 12 shots and were 0 for 12 from 3-point range through three quarters.

Skiles went small with Jennings and Earl Boykins to encourage his team to attack the rim instead of settling for jumpers. Maggette got the message, converting two three-point plays to close the third period and cut Minnesota's lead to 74-64.

They got as close as six in the final period, but Beasley and Ridnour came through with clutch shots to hold them off.

"It's hard to get a run going when the ball is shot and there's three to four T-Wolves jumping up and down for it, and two or three Bucks players standing there looking at them," Skiles said.

Now 0-2, this is not the start the Bucks envisioned coming off their first playoff appearance in four years. Even more troubling for them, they were out-hustled and out-worked, two big no-nos under the demanding Skiles.

Jennings finished 4 for 15 with seven assists and Andrew Bogut had eight points and 10 rebounds.

Officials Ron Garretson, David Guthrie and Marat Kogut called things awfully close, hampering the game from getting into any kind of flow. They called 32 fouls in the first half - many of the nickel-dime variety - which led to 43 free throws.

"They killed us tonight on the boards," Jennings said. "They just seemed like they wanted it more than we did tonight. I think right now we're in like cruise control, and we need to change that. Fast."

Bucks-Timberwolves notebook

THE FACTS: The 'new-look' Minnesota Timberwolves got their first win of the season, defeating the Milwaukee Bucks 96-85 on Friday night. Michael Beasley scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Kevin Love scored 17 and grabbed 16 to lead a surprisingly athletic and aggressive Minnesota team.

QUOTABLE: "They have beat us three times in a very short period of time. You have to give them credit. They totally outplayed us pretty much every minute when played them in these three games. We're not the type of team that can get outplayed and come back and win."

THE STAT: Minnesota wins because of their 'hustle stats.' Wolves 74 total rebounds, Bucks 50. Wolves 20 offensive rebounds, Bucks nine. Wolves 11 blocks, Bucks eight. Wolves eight steals, Bucks four.

TURNING POINT: After leading by as many as 17 in the third quarter and seeing Milwaukee get within six with 9:52 to play, Minnesota clamped down on defense and got a number of key offensive rebounds and built a 16-point lead on their way to a 11-point victory.

QUOTABLE II: "We're not thinking about last year. This is a new year, new season, new team. We're going to keep fighting. ... We knew they we going to make a run; they're a good team. To be able to hold them off and come out and get some points and some stops [at the end of the game]. That's big for us."
