The Dallas Mavericks have great length in their frontcourt thanks to the addition of Tyson Chandler alongside Dirk Nowitzki.

The sight of two 7-footers is probably the last thing the Memphis Grizzlies need at this time.

The Mavericks look for a 10th straight home victory over the Grizzlies on Friday night, with Memphis short-handed in its frontcourt.

Dallas (1-0) acquired Chandler from Charlotte in the offseason to bolster its defense. The Mavericks were 15th in the league in field goal defense last season, but the new look helped them limit the Bobcats to 39.7 percent shooting Wednesday in a season-opening 101-86 victory.

"We are one game in, but our defensive numbers are better than they have been," coach Rick Carlisle said. "It's the foundation for success."

Matching up with that kind of size figures to be a problem for Memphis (0-1). Center Marc Gasol is out with a sprained left ankle, and All-Star forward Zach Randolph went down with a lower back injury during Wednesday's 119-104 loss to Atlanta.

"It's tough," said Grizzlies forward Darrell Arthur, a Dallas native. "They're a big part of this team. They're the two leaders, captains of our team. When they go down it's hard."

The 6-foot-9 Randolph scored four points on 1-of-6 shooting, did not play in the second half and was replaced in the lineup by 6-6 Sam Young. Memphis was outrebounded 44-39.

"I'm very sore," Randolph said. "I just have to see how it feels, get some treatment. I'm going to come back when I'm 100 percent."

The Grizzlies have lost by an average of 12.1 points during their nine-game skid in Dallas. Third-year guard O.J. Mayo has struggled in the last four losses, averaging 13.8 points on 34.5 percent shooting.

Mayo had a quiet opener with nine points. Mike Conley scored 23 and Rudy Gay added 21 for the Grizzlies.

Memphis began 0-6 on the road last season and finished 17-24.

The Grizzlies will have to try to figure out to do a better job against Nowitzki, who is shooting 56.0 percent and averaging 24.8 points and 8.3 rebounds during the nine-game home win streak in the series.

The German superstar was efficient Wednesday with 28 points and 13 rebounds. He was more impressed with the contribution of his new teammate on defense.

"We were really scrambling out there," Nowitzki said. "Our center combo will be great all year. Tyson's all over the place."

Chandler had eight points and eight rebounds. He's been plagued by injuries the last two seasons, and hasn't faced Memphis in nearly two years.

"I've got to bring (aggressive play) night in and night out because this team is going to need it," Chandler said. "We have everything else: scorers, guys who finish, so I have to bring defensive intensity and let my team feed off of it."

Jason Kidd had 12 points and 18 assists. He will match up with the speedy Conley, who was born seven years before the 37-year-old made his NBA debut.

Gay, Mayo lead Grizzlies past Mavericks

DALLAS (AP) The Memphis Grizzlies finally earned an elusive win in Big D.

Rudy Gay scored 21 points, O.J. Mayo added 20, and each made a key defensive play in the final seconds to help the Grizzlies beat the Dallas Mavericks 91-90 on Friday night.

The Grizzlies ended a nine-game road losing streak to the Mavericks, winning in Dallas for the first time since Nov. 26, 2005.

"I've never won here, so it feels great," Mike Conley said. "We didn't buckle when it came down to the end. We made the plays defensively that we needed to make to win the game."

Marc Gasol added 10 points and 15 rebounds for Memphis, which split its first two games of the season. Dallas native Darrell Arthur contributed 14 points.

Gasol missed the opener with a sprained left ankle, but went through pregame warmups and decided his ankle was sound enough for him to play.

Dirk Nowitzki had 27 points and Caron Butler finished with 18 for the Mavericks, also 1-1 after two games.

Nowitzki's 18-footer gave Dallas a 90-89 lead, but Conley hit one of two free throws with 47 seconds remaining to tie it.

Gasol was fouled by Tyson Chandler during a scrap for a rebound with 6.7 left, and he made one of two free throws to give Memphis the lead.

Gay knocked Jason Terry's pass attempt out of bounds with 1.9 seconds left, and Mayo stole Jason Kidd's inbounds pass to seal the victory. Terry also missed a 21-foot jumper with 31 seconds to play.

"Bad execution down the stretch," Nowitzki said. "We had enough chances. We had the ball with 6 seconds left, that's plenty of time. But we didn't even get a look. It's a bad loss, a game we've got to win."

The Mavericks missed 12 of 18 shots and committed nine turnovers in the fourth quarter.

"That's too many," Terry said. "You can't do that and win. You've got to value every possession."

The Grizzlies were without starting forward Zach Randolph, who bruised his lower back in the first half of Wednesday night's loss to Atlanta. They also overcame 39 percent field-goal shooting and 11 missed free throws in 36 tries, helped by 20 Dallas turnovers that led to 19 points.

"(The Grizzlies) were scrappy defensively tonight," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "I think they had something to do with it. But we've got to do better."

Dallas used a 10-2 run over the final 1:22 of the third quarter, capped by Terry's layup with 0.2 left, to grab a 75-69 advantage.

The Mavericks built a 50-41 halftime lead behind Nowitzki's 14 points.

Dallas started 11 for 18 from the field and was ahead after one quarter, 29-24. But Carlisle could not have been pleased with Memphis' seven offensive rebounds, 11 in the first half and 14 for the game.

"Look, this is two games out of 82, so come back in two weeks and we'll see where we are," Carlisle said.

NOTES: Nowitzki had made 82 consecutive free throws during the regular season until he missed with 5:27 left in the second quarter. His previous regular-season miss was against Denver on March 29. The NBA record for consecutive free throws is 97 by Minnesota's Michael Williams from March 25-Nov. 9, 1993. Nowitzki missed two of four during one stretch in the second quarter. ... Dallas has gone 940 games with at least one successful 3-pointer. ... The Grizzlies are 11-49 against the Mavs.

THE FACTS: Marc Gasol grabbed 15 rebounds and scored 10 points, including the game-winning free throw with 6.7 seconds left Friday to give the Grizzlies a rare 91-90 road victory against the Mavericks. Memphis had dropped nine straight in Dallas dating back to Nov. 26, 2005. Rudy Gay led Memphis with 21 points and O.J. Mayo added 20.

QUOTABLE: "I just felt like my teammates really needed me and I am not 100 percent, but I knew I could do something and help them out and just be there for us."

THE STAT: Memphis corralled 14 offensive rebounds and posted a 16-6 edge in second-chance points. Gasol's decisive free throw came after he was fouled by Tyson Chandler while coming down with his sixth offensive board of the night.

TURNING POINT: With All-Star forward Zach Randolph sidelined by a bruised tailbone, the fact that Gasol was able to start and play 33-plus minutes meant the Grizzlies didn't have to play small ball against the bigger Mavericks. Gasol helped Memphis post a 34-30 scoring advantage in the paint.

QUOTABLE II: "It was awesome to battle and go through the adversity we had with Zach being out, not certain that Marc was going to play, them playing zone, and we just kept hanging in there until we finally got it done."

HOT: Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 points on 11-for-15 shooting against the Grizzlies and is 22-for-28 from the field through two games.

NOT: Dallas turned the ball over 20 times, including nine in the fourth quarter. That's now 36 turnovers in two games for the Mavericks.

GOOD MOVE: Hollins' decision to have the 7-1 Gasol guard the Mavericks' inbounds pass with 1.9 seconds left worked out. Jason Kidd, who finished with 10 assists and five turnovers, couldn't find a clear opening and his pass was picked off by Mayo to end the game.

NOTABLE: When Nowitzki missed a free throw at the 5:27 mark of the second quarter, it snapped a streak of 82 consecutive free throws made during the regular season. The streak dated back to a March 29, 2010 game against the Nuggets. The NBA record is 97 by Minnesota's Michael Williams in 1993.
