The Orlando Magic have won three consecutive Southeast Division titles and haven't done much tinkering to perhaps the NBA's deepest roster, yet they're seen by many as a long shot to make it four in a row.

That's just fine with the Magic.

The formation of a new Big Three in South Beach hasn't dampened expectations in Orlando, where the championship-hungry Magic open their season - and the new Amway Center - on Thursday night against No. 1 pick John Wall and the revamped Washington Wizards.

Orlando (59-23) posted the same record the past two seasons, but couldn't follow its trip to the 2009 NBA finals - where it lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in five games - with a similar run. The Magic swept Charlotte and Atlanta in the first two rounds, then fell in six games to Boston in the Eastern Conference finals.

"Sometimes losing is the best thing to happen to you," said center Dwight Howard, the league's two-time reigning Defensive Player of the Year. "It wasn't good for us to get put out of the playoffs the way that we did, but we learned a lot. We're going to use that to make us a better team."

General manager Otis Smith was busy after the Magic lost to the Lakers, jettisoning Hedo Turkoglu and bringing in Vince Carter, but he didn't have nearly as eventful an offseason in 2010. Small forward Matt Barnes and reserve point guard Anthony Johnson were replaced by Quentin Richardson and Chris Duhon, but the roster remained mostly intact.

"I think the biggest misconception in the NBA is that so many teams think you need to make a bunch of changes every year," Carter said. "The biggest improvement I think any team can make is keeping guys together and improving team chemistry."

Few expect that to be enough to win a fourth straight Southeast crown. Miami appears to be the favorite in the division after teaming LeBron James and Chris Bosh with Dwyane Wade.

The Magic are well aware there's a perception of doubt.

"It should be fuel for us," point guard Jameer Nelson said. "It should be a motivation type of thing and not discouraging because we're not getting publicity and the notoriety those guys are getting. Because that's not what makes the story."

The early story in Orlando is the opening of the Amway Center, which is about three times the size of Amway Arena - one of the NBA's most out-of-date venues that opened when the Magic began play in 1989.

While the arena may be Orlando's biggest offseason addition, there's no question what the biggest move was for the Wizards (26-56). Washington won the draft lottery and the right to pick Wall, the speedy point guard who was the SEC player of the year in his only season at Kentucky.

Wall averaged 15.7 points, 7.9 assists and 2.1 steals in seven preseason games.

"He's going to be great," guard Gilbert Arenas said. "He has a knack for finding people and getting to the basket. ... He's Batman, I'm Robin."

How Wall and Arenas co-exist may ultimately determine if the Wizards can end their two-year postseason drought. That may take some time considering Arenas hasn't played in a regular-season game since Jan. 5 - one day before he was suspended for a felony gun conviction.

Arenas won't play in at least the first two games because of a strained ankle tendon that limited him in the preseason.

"Unfortunately, we won't have Gilbert," said guard Kirk Hinrich, who was acquired from Chicago and will likely replace Arenas in the starting lineup. "But we can't control it. We have to go out there and try to execute our game plan and we'll see what happens."

That legitimate injury came on the heels of one Arenas faked. Coach Flip Saunders initially announced the guard would miss a preseason game against Atlanta because of a sore left knee, but Arenas revealed after the game he made it up so that Nick Young could start.

The Wizards fined the three-time All-Star $50,000.

Al Thornton will likely start at small forward as Josh Howard continues to recover from a knee injury, but the other key to immediate success - aside from Wall's development - may be the growth of the starting frontcourt.

Power forward Andray Blatche averaged 22.1 points in 32 post-All-Star break starts for depleted Washington, but he'll no longer be averaging nearly 20 shots. Behind Blatche will be Yi Jianlian, a former top 10 pick who didn't pan out with Milwaukee or New Jersey.

The Wizards would also like to see improvement from center JaVale McGee, who will have his hands full against Howard. McGee averaged 6.4 points in his second season.

The teams split four meetings in 2009-10.

A Magic Opening: Orlando routs Wizards, 112-83

ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) The warmup acts are over.

A perfect preseason? Gone. An opening-night blowout? Forgotten. For the Orlando Magic, LeBron James and the new-look Miami Heat await.

Dwight Howard had 23 points and 10 rebounds to lift the Magic to an easy 112-83 victory over the Washington Wizards in the debut of No. 1 pick John Wall on Thursday night, giving the NBA's newest arena a grand opening and setting the stage for a sizzling Sunshine State series showdown.

After months of talk, Superman and all his sidekicks finally have a chance to make a real statement.

Some couldn't even wait another night.

"Honestly, I'm sick of listening every hour about Miami - Miami that, how great they are, how big they are, what kind of record they gonna have," said backup center Marcin Gortat, who had eight points and seven rebounds. "I get every day interviews back in Poland, people calling me about Miami, Miami, what you think about Miami? What you think about Big Three? I'm going to say the same thing: they are a great team, they have three superstars, they got a couple good role players on the team.

"They looking good on the paper, but they got to start winning."

One thing is for sure: Orlando has looked real good.

Vince Carter had 18 points and Jameer Nelson scored 16 to help the Magic cruise to another blowout victory after a perfect preseason. And it didn't seem to matter what the league's most-anticipated rookie did.

Wall had 14 points and nine assists - much of it in cleanup duty - on 6 for 19 shooting in his first meaningful professional game. He showed flashes of stardom but became just another spectator on an emotional night in Orlando.

"It was tough," Wall said. "It's really telling me what I need to work on, but I already know. But as a team aspect, we have a lot we need to work on."

Orlando's opening night couldn't have gone smoother.

A standing-room only crowd of 18,918 even brought out Tiger Woods from his Orlando-area home - once a regular at Magic games - for the first time since his sex scandal last year. Magic All-Star center Dwight Howard took the microphone to thank fans before the game, and NBA Commissioner David Stern endured a long shower of boos before he proclaimed that there's no arena "better than this facility in the world."

Magic owner Rich DeVos then walked to center court, a cane in his right hand and a team official balancing him on the left, and gave a teary-eyed speech seeing the Amway Center finally realized.

"This is a Magic building. But it's your community center. It's your place for many adventures to take place," said DeVos, 84, his voice quivering. "So we know that this place will be a place of comfort and joy, and that everybody who comes here will be honored and loved and cherished."

The Magic didn't exactly give the same comfort to the visitors.

They showed the same dominance that led them to an undefeated preseason, sprinting out to a double-digit lead from the start behind a flurry of 3-pointers and hard-driving layups. Orlando went ahead by 14 after the first quarter, 58-34 at half and 35 points in the fourth.

And the highlights were everywhere.

Carter had a one-handed, outstretched layup over Al Thornton for a three-point play; Howard met Wall in mid-air to swat the rookie's layup, sent another one into the first row and might have received the first-opening night "M-V-P" chants in league history.

As for Miami, Howard said, "We can make a statement."

The Wizards were simply no match.

Wall came out a little too hyped and took 11 of his team's first 24 shots, making only three. But the former Kentucky star also showed that roderunner-like speed and awesome athleticism.

That wasn't nearly enough.

A Wizards team already enduring growing pains were without Gilbert Arenas, who was back in the Washington area getting treatment on a strained tendon in his right ankle. They will also be without Arenas, the often troubled guard trying to comeback from a 50-game suspension last season after a felony gun conviction for bringing the weapon into the locker room, Saturday night in Atlanta.

The Magic finished the preseason 7-0 and won by an average of almost 25 points per game. They're the three-time defending division champions, two years removed from the NBA finals and still seething about being booted by Boston in the Eastern Conference finals in May.

Oh, all that attention for that LeBron guy who just moved into the neighborhood hasn't sat well either. Orlando's first shot at him is next, and even Magic coach Stan Van Gundy had to poke fun at all the hype.

"You guys can decide what's a big game and what's not. If they give me two wins for tomorrow night, then it's a big game," Van Gundy said, later adding, "I'm not big on the human-interest stories."

NOTES: After Magic PG Jason Williams played eight minutes in the fourth quarter before getting two technical fouls for arguing, an automatic ejection. ... Wall's first points came off a goaltend by Brandon Bass three minutes into the game.

THE FACTS: Dwight Howard scored 23 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and the Orlando Magic opened the season -- and their new arena -- with a 112-83 blowout of the Washington Wizards. The Magic shot 56 percent and had an overwhelming 53-25 rebound advantage. Rookie guard John Wall, the first overall pick in the NBA Draft, had 14 points and nine assists for the Wizards.

QUOTABLE: "You're concerned when you bring a young team into this type of environment. We played scared. We had 49 missed shots and we only had three offensive rebounds."

THE STAT: Howard shot 10 free throws in the first quarter and 19 for the game, making only nine.

HOT: The Magic's starters shot 29-for-42 (69 percent).

NOT: The Wizards' Andray Blatche went scoreless in 15 first-half minutes, missing all five shots.

TURNING POINT: Vince Carter scored five points, and Howard and Rashard Lewis added four each on a 15-2 first-quarter run that left the Magic with a 24-7 lead. The lead never again got under 13.

INSIDE THE ARENA: David Stern joined in the chorus of praise for Orlando's new $380 million Amway Center. "I've traveled the world, and there's nothing really better than this facility," the NBA commissioner declared in a pre-game press conference.

ROOKIE WATCH: Wall's first NBA points came on a goaltending call on Howard. He had five assists in the third quarter. "For my first game, a road game against one of the top teams that went to the Finals two years ago, it was pretty tough," he said.

NOTABLE: No Magic starter played in the fourth quarter. The Magic play at Miami on Friday night.
