Pistons-Nets Preview

After struggling through seasons they would probably prefer to forget, the Detroit Pistons and New Jersey Nets are realistic about their chances in a competitive Eastern Conference.

With modest goals, the Nets and Pistons open their 2010-11 seasons Wednesday night in Newark.

New Jersey and Detroit were two of the worst teams in the East last season, but for the Nets, it was a particularly bad campaign.

They lost their first 18 games before finishing 12-70, leading to an overhaul under new owner Mikhail Prokhorov. Billy King replaced Rod Thorn as general manager and Avery Johnson has taken over as coach.

New Jersey also moved out of the Izod Center and into the Prudential Arena in Newark.

However, the changes weren't enough to lure a big free agent. New Jersey was turned down by LeBron James, Chris Bosh, Dwyane Wade and Carlos Boozer while an attempt to trade for Carmelo Anthony also fell through.

The Nets weren't completely shut out in free agency, signing Travis Outlaw, Johan Petro, Jordan Farmar and Anthony Morrow. Farmar spent the last four years with the Los Angeles Lakers, winning two rings while averaging 6.9 points. Outlaw and Morrow are expected to be in Wednesday's starting lineup.

Derrick Favors, the No. 3 overall pick in the draft, will likely begin the season off the bench.

"I would say from when we started Sept. 25, we've made major strides," Johnson said. "Not enough to be a very good basketball team, but we've made some strides."

While New Jersey, which returns only four players from last season's team, acknowledges it probably doesn't have the talent to compete with the top clubs in the conference, it does expect to improve.

One of the players expected to be key in making that happen is Brook Lopez, who was one of the few bright spots last season after leading the Nets with 18.8 points and 8.6 rebounds per game.

"I really don't want to compare this team to last year's team, but we are improving very well and becoming a real team," Lopez said. "Since we started camp, we've had a lot of guys improve tremendously. I'm sure we'll be a better team this year in terms of wins. That's what we're shooting for."

Although he was the subject of trade rumors over the summer, Devin Harris is back and looking to rebound after a disappointing year.

Harris had the best season of his career in 2008-09, averaging 21.3 points and 6.9 assists while making the All-Star team as a reserve. However, the 27-year-old was limited to 64 games last season due to injuries and averaged 16.9 points while shooting a career-worst 40.3 percent.

"Forgive, forget, and be ready to move on," Harris said.

That also could be the motto of the Pistons.

Detroit went 27-55 last season and missed the playoffs for the first time in nine years. The 27 wins were its fewest since going 20-62 in 1993-94.

The Pistons are hoping they've improved, although after struggling with injuries last season, they'll be counting on an aging lineup to have enough left to compete with expected Central Division front-runners Chicago and Milwaukee.

Richard Hamilton was limited to a career-low 46 games last season because of hamstring and ankle issues. Ben Wallace, who turned 36 last month, played in 69 games and Tayshaun Prince was in the lineup for 49 games because of back and knee problems.

The Pistons signed Tracy McGrady in the offseason as he tries to boost a career that has been marred by injuries. McGrady played 30 games last season for Houston and New York, averaging 8.2 points and 3.3 assists in 22.5 minutes per game.

"It's not like I'm 41 or even 35," McGrady said after signing a one-year, $1.3 million contract in August. "I just turned 31. No one has come down and stolen away my talent - I still have a lot in the tank."

Detroit is also counting on a better season from Ben Gordon, who made 17 starts due to injuries and was held to a career-low 13.8 points per game.

If they can stay healthy, the Pistons believe they should improve defensively. In 2009-10, Detroit gave up 99.1 points per game for its most allowed since 1999-2000, when opponents averaged 102.0. It was in stark contrast to the previous nine seasons when the Pistons had the East's top scoring defense, allowing 90.9 points per game.

"There's no question we've gotten better, but there is a lot of room for improvement still," coach John Kuester told the Pistons' official website.

Detroit won two of three against New Jersey last season and has taken 11 of the last 14 meetings.

Nets rally late to win for new Russian owner

NEWARK, N.J. (AP) This certainly wasn't the same old New Jersey Nets.

New owner, new coach, new building, new roster and something totally different, a win to kick off the season.

Anthony Morrow hit a go-ahead 3-pointer with 26 seconds to play and the Nets gave Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov a win in his first game as their owner, 101-98 over the Detroit Pistons on Wednesday night.

"Nothing is really perfect but this was a beautiful ending," new coach Avery Johnson said. "If this was a movie, for a team coming out of a situation we were coming out of, for a new team coming together, it's a beautiful ending."

It certainly was a far cry from last season, when the Nets won a franchise-worst 12 games and started the season with an NBA-record 18 consecutive losses.

With 11 new faces on their 15-man roster, the new Nets showed heart in their first game at the Prudential Center. They outscored the Pistons 13-3 in the final 1:40 to win a game they never would have a year ago.

"We're moving forward," said point guard Devin Harris, who had 22 points and nine assists, including one on Morrow's go-ahead basket. "I don't like references to last year. It's forgotten about. This is about this team showing what we can do when we do things right."

Brook Lopez led the Nets with 25 points and nine rebounds. Morrow, who was signed a free agent in the offseason, added 13 points, and Jordan Farmar and Terrence Williams each had 10.

Tayshaun Prince, Rodney Stuckey and Charlie Villanueva had 14 points apiece for the Pistons, who had seven players in double figures.

The Pistons had two chances to tie in the closing seconds. Villanueva missed a 3-pointer with 2 seconds to go and Stuckey missed a desperation heave from the corner at the buzzer after Williams missed two free throws at the other end.

"This is definitely one of those games we just couldn't finish," Villanueva said. "We were up seven with 1:40 to go and we pretty much had the game won. We had to win that game. We just didn't do the things down the stretch to win that game."

The Nets seemed headed for another opening-night loss when Richard Hamilton (13 points) hit a 3-pointer from the left corner with 1:40 remaining for a 95-88 lead.

Farmar cut the gap to 95-91 with a 3-pointer from the left wing with 1:31 to play, then stripped Ben Gordon on the other end. Harris created contact with Gordon at the other end and converted a three-point play with 57 seconds left to cut the lead to 95-94.

After Stuckey missed a shot under pressure from Farmar, Morrow put the Nets ahead 97-95 after Harris nearly lost the ball and flipped it back to him.

"I had no doubt I was going to make that," said Morrow, who was 3 of 6 from long range. "I knew Devin penetrating was going to draw attention. I'm used to standing down in the corner that last couple of years. Now with Devin, I've trained myself to come up. It worked out perfectly. I knew he wasn't going to turn that over. I made sure I was the first person he saw when he brought his head up."

Villanueva missed a 3-pointer on the Pistons' next possession with 18 seconds to go and Harris pushed the lead to 99-95 with two free throws with 16 seconds left.

Villanueva cut the deficit to a point with a 3-pointer with 14 seconds to go but Farmar made two free throws for the Nets' final points a second later.

Down 70-67 at the start of the fourth quarter, the Pistons outscored New Jersey 20-7 in the opening six-plus minutes to take an 87-77 lead.

Gordon was the catalyst, hitting a jumper, a 3-pointer and setting up Will Bynum for a three-point play on a fast break in the opening two minutes.

The Nets rallied from a 10-point deficit early in the third quarter behind two of the four leftovers from last year - Lopez and Harris. The combined to score 15 of 17 points in a 17-6 spurt that gave them a 62-61 lead.

NOTES: Commissioner David Stern announced before the game that the NBA draft would be held at the Prudential Center in 2011 and stayed to watch the game. ... With the league cutting down on player dissent, referee Joe Crawford showed patience early in the third quarter when Williams raised his hands after a call against a teammate. ... The game drew 15,178 fans. ...The Nets shot nearly 49 percent from the field. ...Derrick Favors, the No. 3 pick overall in the draft, had eight points and 10 rebounds for the Nets coming off the bench.

Pistons-Nets notebook

THE FACTS:
The New Jersey Nets celebrated their first regular-season game at the Prudential Center with a come-from-behind 101-98 victory over the Detroit Pistons. Anthony Morrow drained a 3-pointer from the right wing to give the Nets the lead for good at 97-95.

QUOTABLE:
"It's very, very frustrating. To be up seven with 1:40 to go [and lose] is frustrating. We have to close out the game."

THE STAT:
The teams combined for 62 points -- 31 apiece -- in the fourth quarter, 11 more than in any other frame.

TURNING POINT:
Devin Harris sank a running fadeaway off one leg while getting fouled with 57.1 seconds left. The and-one put the Nets in position to take the lead for good on Morrow's 3-pointer with 26 seconds remaining.

INSIDE THE ARENA:
Commissioner David Stern held a pregame press conference with Newark Mayor Cory Booker to discuss the 2011 NBA Draft, which will be held in Newark. The Nets Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov watched the team he bought last spring play for the first time. Nets minority owner Jay-Z showed up in the middle of the second quarter and sat courtside with his wife Beyonce. Rapper Master P also attended the game.

ROOKIE WATCH:
Derrick Favors finished with eight points and 10 rebounds, converting nicely around the rim, getting to the foul line, and boxing out well in the paint.

NOTABLE:
The Prudential Center deserves a special mention, not only for its state-of-the-art amenities, but because it's a place where Nets fans can make actual noise. The fans, many of them waving white towels late in the game, were certifiably raucous. ... While Brook Lopez put up the gaudiest stats (25 points, nine rebounds, three blocks), Harris kept things close with a personal run on the offensive end midway through the third quarter -- three baskets, a free throw, and an assist -- and his one-on-one domination late in the game made the difference. ... It took the Nets eighteen less games this season to get into the win column.
