Bobcats-Mavericks Preview

Despite posting at least 50 wins in each of the last 10 seasons, the Dallas Mavericks are still trying to secure the franchise's first NBA title.

A second straight postseason appearance would be an accomplishment for the Michael Jordan-led Charlotte Bobcats in 2010-11.

Looking to put another playoff disappointment behind them, Dirk Nowitzki and the Mavericks open their regular season Wednesday at American Airlines Center, where the Bobcats try again for their first-ever win over Dallas.

After finishing 55-27 last season and winning their first Southwest Division title since 2006-07, the second-seeded Mavericks fell in six games to San Antonio in the opening round of the Western Conference playoffs. Since losing to Miami in the 2006 finals, Dallas has been eliminated in the first round three times.

Last season's exit was followed by a vague comment from outspoken owner Mark Cuban.

"I'm not proud of the NBA. I'm not proud of my inability over the last 10 years to have an impact like I want to have," Cuban said. "So I kind of feel like I owe fans an apology. But that's just the way this business goes."

While the potential loss of Nowitzki, who became an unrestricted free agent for the first time, could have sent the franchise into a tailspin, the 32-year-old German signed a four-year, $80 million deal with Dallas in July.

"It wouldn't have felt right to put another uniform on," Nowitzki said. "The fans, everybody here have been so loyal to me the last 12 years, it would have felt like running away a little bit, in a way. So I'm here for the long run - four more years to reach our goal. I'm ready."

Despite the Bobcats playing in the Southeast Division with revamped Miami and Orlando, Jordan is expecting his team to be ready as it tries to build off the franchise's first playoff appearance, which ended with a first-round sweep by the Magic.

"We'll be OK," said Jordan, who became the first ex-player to buy a team when he made a deadline deal with Bob Johnson on Feb. 26. "Obviously, we don't have the marquee three All-Stars, but we've got a good young nucleus with something to build upon."

After nearly walking away in the offseason, 70-year-old coach Larry Brown enters his third year on the Bobcats' bench. Jordan expects Brown to stick around this season and beyond since "he's got too much coaching in him," and both are hoping for an improvement on last year's 44-38 record.

The salary cap-strapped Bobcats, though, suffered a major loss when they couldn't re-sign point guard Raymond Felton in the offseason. In his third season, D.J. Augustin will take over the starting job.

"He's in much better shape. He's much stronger and quicker than he was," Brown said of Augustin. "He's got to facilitate more and the only way that's going to happen is for him to be more aggressive offensively. But I'm sure that's going to come. He's had a terrific preseason."

The Mavericks, meanwhile, didn't get a chance to see their point guard of the future during training camp.

Rodrigue Beaubois, who became the first rookie to shoot at least 50 percent from the field, 40 percent from 3-point range and 80 percent from the foul line last season, suffered a broken left foot in August and has been in a walking boot for two months.

"I think our future is in Roddy's hands," Nowitzki said of the 22-year-old Guadeloupe native. "I think he brings that kind of level to our game."

While coach Rick Carlisle will likely start Jason Terry next to Jason Kidd in the Mavericks' backcourt until Beaubois returns, Dallas' frontcourt has a new look with the addition of Tyson Chandler.

Acquired in the offseason in a deal that sent Erick Dampier and Eduardo Najera to Charlotte, the 28-year-old center could be a nice fit alongside Nowitzki and Brendan Haywood, who signed a six-year extension in July.

"He is one of the most versatile big men in the league today," general manager Donnie Nelson said of Chandler, who is expected play Wednesday after missing Friday's preseason finale with an injured right thumb. "He gives our front line a defensive, shot-blocking, athletic punch we haven't had here in awhile."

The Bobcats, who waived Dampier and his $13 million non-guaranteed contract, still have a dynamic frontcourt with Stephen Jackson, Gerald Wallace and Boris Diaw. Charlotte also brings back forward Tyrus Thomas, who signed a five-year, $40 million deal after arriving via trade from Chicago on Feb. 18.

Jackson, who averaged a team-high 21.1 points last season, strained a tendon in his left ankle during practice Tuesday, but expects to play.

"It's getting better now, nothing serious," Jackson said. "I'll be ready to go."

The Mavs are the only team Charlotte has never beaten, winning all 12 previous meetings. In the Bobcats' last visit to Dallas on Dec. 12, Nowitzki hit a 10-foot jumper with 1.8 seconds left in overtime for a 98-97 victory, a defeat Brown called "one of the most disappointing losses we've had."

DALLAS (AP) Dallas coach Rick Carlisle's top priorities entering the season are to improve defensively and defend home court better.

The Mavericks did both, plus got a big night from Dirk Nowitzki.

Nowitzki had 28 points and 13 rebounds, Jason Kidd added 12 points and 18 assists, and Dallas beat the Charlotte Bobcats 101-86 on Wednesday night in the opener for both teams.

Dallas was 15th in the league in field goal defense and won 28 home games in 2009-10. This season Carlisle wants his team among the NBA's top 10 defensive teams with 30-plus home wins.

The Mavericks limited the Bobcats to 39.7 percent from the field. Dallas forced 21 turnovers, leading to 28 points, and finished with 12 steals and five blocked shots.

"Our good offense put us in position to guard better," said Carlisle, who turned 51 on Wednesday. "We are one game in, but our defensive numbers are better than they have been. It's the foundation for success."

Nowitzki went 11 for 13 from the field and converted all six free throws, but Carlisle was just as excited about Nowitzki's defense.

"He gave us length on defense, which will get overlooked in the numbers," Carlisle said. "But he did a great job. He worked extremely hard."

Nowitzki credited center Tyson Chandler, a trade acquisition over the summer who had eight points and eight rebounds in his Mavericks debut, and backup Brendan Haywood for a strong inside defensive presence.

"We were really scrambling out there," Nowitzki said. "Our center combo will be great all year. Tyson's all over the place."

Chandler brings athleticism to the position, something the Mavericks often lacked in the middle last season.

"I've got to bring (aggressive play) night in and night out because this team is going to need it," Chandler said. "We have everything else: scorers, guys who finish, so I have to bring defensive intensity and let my team feed off of it."

Jason Terry added 22 points and Caron Butler scored 13 for Dallas.

Tyrus Thomas scored 22 points and Gerald Wallace had 16 for the Bobcats, who've never beaten the Mavericks in 13 meetings.

Dallas expanded a four-point halftime lead to 72-55 with a 21-10 spurt to open the third quarter, led by Nowitzki's 14 points on 6-of-7 shooting.

The Mavericks were ahead by 19 in the third quarter and carried an 80-67 advantage into the final quarter.

Charlotte pulled within 84-78 with 6:58 left on D.J. Augustin's 3-pointer and Wallace's free throw, but Terry's short jumper capped a 9-2 run to put Dallas up 93-80 with 5:17 to play.

"We had to fight back early and use a lot of our energy, but in the end we just didn't have it," Augustin said.

The Mavs raced to a 16-0 start, opening 7 for 10 from the floor with Nowitzki hitting a 15-footer on Dallas' first attempt. Charlotte didn't have a basket until Boris Diaw's layup with 6:12 left.

"We talked about getting better starts," Nowitzki said. "I really liked the effort. The energy was there."

The Bobcats got their offense untracked, slicing the deficit to 25-21 after one quarter.

Charlotte used a 25-4 first-half run to take a 31-27 lead, but Dallas closed the second quarter with an 8-1 spurt for a 49-45 edge at the break.

"For us to come back and close the second quarter with a lead and on a positive note, that was good," Kidd said.

Notes: Nowitzki has converted 78 consecutive free throws during the regular season. His last miss was against Denver on March 29 of last season. ... Nowitzki had his sixth career double-double on opening night. ... Kidd had a career high for assists on opening night. He had 16 against the Clippers on Oct. 31, 1997. ... Mavericks G Roddy Beaubois is still wearing a protective boot as he recovers from a fractured left foot. There's no timetable for him to get on the practice court. ... C Kwame Brown (sprained left ankle) and F Dominic McGuire (stress fracture, left leg) are sidelined for Charlotte. ... Terry, Dallas' sixth man last season, got the start.

THE FACTS: Behind double-doubles by veterans Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Kidd, the Mavericks improved to 13-0 all time against the Bobcats with a season-opening 101-86 victory Wednesday in Dallas. Dallas is the only team Charlotte has not beaten since joining the league in 2004.

QUOTABLE: "I really like the effort. The energy was there, everybody was active on defense and we really tried to make it hard on [Stephen] Jackson and the other guys because they can really play. It was a great effort from everybody and anytime you hold a team to under 40 percent shooting, you had a good defensive night."
-- Nowitzki on holding Jackson to 14 points and the Bobcats to 39.7 percent shooting.

THE STAT: With 18 assists (and only one turnover), Jason Kidd came within one of tying John Stockton's NBA record for most assists in a season opener. Stockton had 19 in Utah's 122-113 victory against Denver on Nov. 3, 1989. Kidd added 12 points and three steals.

TURNING POINT: The teams traded runs in the early going, but Dallas delivered the decisive blow. The Mavs scored the game's first 16 points, but Charlotte answered with a 25-4 surge when Dallas coach Rick Carlisle went to his bench. With the starters back on the floor, the Mavericks regained control with a 20-5 run wrapped around the intermission.

QUOTABLE II: "That's not new. It's trying to make too many great passes instead of simple passes. When you turn the ball over, you are going to struggle. That's always been our staple."

HOT: Nowitzki was 11-for-13 from the field, including 8-for-9 in the second half. He finished with a game-high 28 points and a game-high 13 rebounds. Nowitzki also made all six of his free throws to extend his streak to 78 consecutive makes, dating back to March 29, 2010 vs. Denver.

NOT: Bobcats point guard D.J. Augustin was locked in from long range in the preseason, shooting 62.5 percent beyond the 3-point line (15-for-24). Against the Mavericks, he was 2-for-10 from the field and 1-for-4 from downtown.

INSIDE THE ARENA: Even though the hometown Texas Rangers were playing at San Francisco in Game 1 of the World Series, and even though there were plenty of empty seats, the game was officially listed as the 359th consecutive regular-season sellout (19,440) at the American Airlines Center. It's the longest-running streak in the NBA.

GOOD MOVE: Former Sixth Man of the Year Jason Terry, who started at shooting guard for the Mavericks, made his case for staying in the lineup with 22 points on 10-for-15 shooting. Center Tyson Chandler also got the start over Brendan Haywood and contributed eight points, eight boards and two blocks against his former teammates.

ROOKIE WATCH: Mavericks guard Dominique Jones played 8:47 and scored the first two points of his career on a 20-footer at the 11:24 mark of the second quarter.

NOTABLE: The victory snapped a bizarre streak of four consecutive season-opening losses by the Mavs, all at home. Dallas lost to Washington to open 2009-10, Houston in 2008-09 and San Antonio in back-to-back years in 2007-08 and 2006-07.
