Jazz-Nuggets Preview

DENVER (AP) The Utah Jazz are down one game and two players since the regular season ended.

An MRI exam Sunday on center Mehmet Okur's left leg confirmed fears of a torn Achilles' tendon, eliminating him from the remainder of the NBA playoffs and, in all likelihood, the world championships in his native Turkey this summer.

``It's horrible, man. We feel bad for Memo,'' Jazz forward Carlos Boozer said.

Okur flew back to Salt Lake City to mull his surgery options, leaving his dispirited teammates behind in Denver to figure out how to stop the Nuggets without him and forward Andrei Kirilenko, who aggravated a strained calf in practice on Thursday.

``It's a sad injury, bad injury, I wish him the best,'' Jazz point guard Deron Williams said as he sat dejectedly on near practice court at the Pepsi Center. ``Memo's a big part of our team. He stretches the defense. He's a guy you really can't replace just because his inside-outside game is really unmatched.''

Okur had been bothered by Achilles' tendinitis in his left leg since April 7 and missed a game but he fought through it and received a painkilling shot before Game 1.

Jazz general manager Kevin O'Connor said he didn't believe that injection had anything to do with Okur tearing the tendon.

``We would never have put a player in a compromising position if there was any indication that the shot would have masked anything or done anything like that,'' O'Connor said. ``We would have never done that. We'd never put a game ahead of a player's health. ... That's not in our DNA.''

O'Connor said Okur's injection ``was certainly his call.''

``Is it related? I'm sure in same way, shape or form, everyone's going to put it on the fact that it is, but (team doctors) didn't feel there was any additional risk in doing that,'' O'Connor said.

Okur flew back to Salt Lake City without addressing reporters or his teammates.

Okur was injured when his right leg slipped as he was driving to the basket Saturday night, shifting all his weight to his left leg, which twisted awkwardly as he fell to the floor - what O'Connor called ``a perfect storm.''

Following surgery, Okur will need three months before he can begin rehab, which can take several more months, likely preventing him from playing in the world basketball championships Aug. 28-Sept. 12.

O'Connor said the Jazz have made some recommendations but it will be up to Okur to pick his surgeon.

Okur's absence saps the Jazz of another playmaker who spreads the court.

``He's definitely a threat out in the perimeter,'' Nuggets acting coach Adrian Dantley said. ``With him not playing, it helps our schemes a little bit defensively. He's a very important part of their team, an important part of their offense.''

Jazz coach Jerry Sloan was his usually stoic self when discussing Okur's season-ending injury.

``That's just part of basketball. Not anything you can do about it. We still have to play. We just wish him the best trying to recover,'' he said.

As for the Jazz, ``we are who we are. We're not going to be able to do too much, other than play some of the younger guys that maybe haven't had a chance to play,'' Sloan said.

That includes Kosta Koufos and Kyrylo Fesenko. Sloan said he would likely keep Paul Millsap coming off the bench.

``Listen, this is probably going to sound bad, but I'm not worried about who's not playing,'' Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin said. ``I feel sorry for him. I don't want to see nobody go down due to injury. But you've got to worry about the guys on the court. He's a huge part of their team but I'm pretty sure they'll come up with something. They're going to miss him, but they'll game-plan around it.''

Boozer, Utah's top scorer and rebounded, is playing through a rib injury and C.J. Miles missed a quarter in Game 1 after sprinting into Chauncey Billups and crashing to the floor while trying to chase down a long pass that Carmelo Anthony had flung toward midcourt.

The Nuggets were pleased with what they got out of Martin, who pulled down 12 boards in 35 minutes, the most he's played since returning last week from an 18-game absence with a balky knee.

``I feel good, better than I expected,'' Martin said after watching film Sunday.

``Hey, I'm going to go until I can't go, until my body tells me to go sit down somewhere,'' Martin said.

Fantastic Williams leads short-handed Jazz past Nuggets

DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- Down two men and a game in the series, the Jazz weren't given much of a chance to compete with Denver in these playoffs.

Somebody forgot to tell them. The Jazz dug deep and came up with a 114-111 win Monday night, and now head back to Utah with momentum and homecourt advantage in their Western Conference first-round series.

Game 3 is Friday.

"We did what we wanted to do, we stole one of the first two here and now because we're at home we can't get complacent," guard Deron Williams said. "It's important not to go out and lay an egg at home."

If Williams plays like he did Monday, Utah should be OK. The guard had 33 points and 14 assists and set the tone from the beginning by driving into the teeth of the Denver defense and drawing fouls.

"He had a terrific game," Utah coach Jerry Sloan said. "He's a terrific player and he gets more confident as he goes farther. We needed all we could get to try and beat this team."

They needed everything because they're undermanned and hurting. Mehmet Okur and Andrei Kirilenko are out and Carlos Boozer is playing with an oblique injury. But despite that, the Jazz got a win few expected.

"With everything going on injury-wise no one is giving us a shot, so we wanted to come out here and put that to rest," Williams said. "We feel we still have a great team that can compete."

They also showed they can make adjustments. After getting scorched by Carmelo Anthony for 42 points in Game 1, the Jazz changed things up on the Denver forward. Instead of letting him hit uncontested jumpers they forced him to put the ball on the floor and go to the rim. Anthony scored 32 and was 14-for-15 from the foul line, but he was called for four charges and fouled out with 25.4 seconds left and his team down one.

"They tried to force me more to go to the basket," Anthony said. "They tried a lot of different things."

Denver was whistled for 37 fouls and looked frustrated by the officiating all night. However, no one wanted to blame the referees.

"That's just part of the game," Nuggets acting head coach Adrian Dantley said. "They went to the rim. Williams got 18 free throws, that's part of the game. You have to adjust to the referees if they're going to make close calls."

It seemed the Nuggets would overcome their frustration and Anthony's tough night, and a 14-point deficit in the third quarter, when they took a 106-103 lead after Nene hit a layup with 2:49 left. But Chauncey Billups missed a 3-pointer and Kyle Korver made the shot of the game.

Down 106-105, Williams fed Korver in the corner, and he drained a 3-pointer with 1:28 left to put Utah up 108-106, a lead it never relinquished.

"Great shot," said Boozer, who finished with 20 points and 14 rebounds.

The Nuggets had a chance to tie when Billups, a 91-percent free-throw shooter, missed one of two from the line with 53 seconds left.

Moments later, Anthony picked up his sixth foul.

"We'll take all those," Williams said. "All those help us out."

The Nuggets looked out of sync and a step slow during the second period, committing seven turnovers and hitting just 7-of-20 shots. The Jazz, on the other hand, started the game hot and stayed that way. They shot 67 percent in the first half and used a 17-3 run to take a 63-51 lead at the break.

The lead grew to 76-62 early in the third when Denver turned it around. A dunk by Kenyon Martin, a 3-pointer from J.R. Smith and a steal and layup by Anthony started a 14-0 run that got the Nuggets even. The Jazz went nearly five minutes without a point before Williams hit four straight free throws.

The Nuggets finally got the lead when Billups hit a 3-pointer to give Denver a 92-91 edge, its first since the 5:12 mark of the second period.

"It was going back and forth from there," Anthony said.

Now the Jazz have control of the series and are headed home for the next two games. The Nuggets have won on the road in the playoffs last year, and they're confident they can do it this year.

"The fun starts now," Anthony said.
