Heat-Celtics Preview

WALTHAM, Mass. (AP) The Boston Celtics achieved their main goal of the season, reaching the playoffs with a relatively healthy team.

And that includes Kevin Garnett.

The team's emotional leader missed all of last year's postseason with a knee injury that required offseason surgery. But this season he played 40 of the last 42 games, and the two he skipped weren't for health reasons.

On Saturday night, Garnett will be in his first playoff game since the Celtics won Game 6 of the 2008 NBA finals over the Los Angeles Lakers to capture their 17th title. It was Garnett's first and he screamed and wept on the Boston court moments after the game.

Now Boston is seeded fourth in the Eastern Conference and faces a hot Miami Heat team in the first round.

``I'm very much looking forward to it,'' Garnett said after Friday's practice. ``Obviously, we all know the past history with me and my injury. So this year, to be in the postseason is great for me.''

He did miss 10 games with a hyperextended right knee and one with a sore right thigh. For much of the season, his ability to push off his legs and jump seemed compromised. Coach Doc Rivers limited Garnett's playing time and he finished with averages of 29.9 minutes and 14.3 points, both the second lowest of his career.

Now he said he's ready to do whatever Rivers asks.

``Postseason play is all about giving everything you have. I'm no exception to that,'' Garnett said. ``This is what you play for right here.''

Point guard Rajon Rondo missed most of Friday's practice with flulike symptoms but will play Saturday, Rivers said. ``I don't anticipate him feeling great.''

The Celtics enter the playoffs after an inconsistent regular season. They were 27-27 since Christmas, the only one of the 16 playoff teams that was not at least seven games over .500 in that span. They also dropped seven of their last 10.

But they're a veteran team and that experience should help.

``Our goal all year long was to get to the playoffs healthy,'' Paul Pierce said. ``I think we've been able to accomplish that.''

The Heat rolled down the stretch of the season, going 12-1 since March 20 and 18-4 since March 1.

``I've never been a big believer in (momentum), but I think it can't hurt,'' Rivers said. ``This is the best time of the year. All your past sins are washed away but your past habits aren't forgotten.''

The Celtics better not forget what Dwyane Wade did to them. The Heat star averaged 33.7 points, 8.7 assists, five assists and two steals in three games against the Celtics this season. But Boston won all three.

``I look at us as underdogs because Boston is a team that last year, if Kevin was healthy, should have been back in the finals, everyone says,'' Wade said. ``This year, they have what they wanted, their whole team. They're not possibly excited about us at all. A lot of people said we weren't going to make the playoffs.''

But the Heat ended up seeded fifth with a 47-35 record and just three fewer wins than the Celtics.

Miami hasn't won a playoff series since the 2006 NBA finals. Wade was the MVP of that series and he's as dangerous as ever.

``He's a great offensive player,'' Rivers said, ``but I think what he's really improved on is he's great at getting everybody else involved as well. ... He's a great ballhandling guard, strong, and he can pass.''

Garnett called Michael Beasley a tough matchup with his ability to shoot with both hands. And Jermaine O'Neal doesn't expect a late-season ankle injury to hamper him. Both are keys to an improved Miami defense that allowed 94.2 points per game, second fewest in the NBA.

O'Neal feels the Heat are much changed since their last game against the Celtics, a 107-102 loss on Feb. 3.

``Absolutely,'' he said. ``Defensively, we're a lot better. We really depend on each other defensively as a team now. Knowing and having that feeling, we feel like we can win any game, anywhere.''

They have the record to back that up. Miami is 12-3 on the road since Feb. 10, the best in the NBA. They won their last eight games away from home by an average of 13.3 points. And, in road games, the Heat held 15 straight teams under 100 points until their finale in Philadelphia.

``We feel like we've built resiliency and a toughness to be able to find ways to win on the road,'' Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said. ``Obviously, we're going to need that because we can't win this series on our home court.''

Boston has the homecourt advantage, but is one of just two NBA teams with fewer wins at home than on the road.

``Game 1 is important because we're at home,'' Pierce said. ``We've got to play well at home.''

Having Garnett should help.

``He brings the energy. He brings the tenacity to the team,'' center Kendrick Perkins said. ``With Kevin out there on the court, he's like the big brother and we all kind of follow his lead.''

Celtics grab series opener in heated matchup

BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Boston Celtics have talked about flipping the switch for a good portion of the season. Through rough months and harsh beat downs suffered on their own court, the message has always seemed to be that things will change in the playoffs.

Saturday night, the Celtics did indeed flip that switch, beating the Miami Heat, 85-76, to take a 1-0 lead in the first-round playoff series. But, with a lackadaisical start, the trigger clearly wasn't the postseason stage. In fact, the Celtics didn't do anything all too differently from what they've shown all season. They just did the good and great things for longer.

"When you get Game 1 at home, you don't find yourself back peddling and pressuring yourself to go out on the road and win," Paul Pierce (16 points) said. "It sets the tone for the series."

After Dwyane Wade burst out of the second-half gates with nine points in the first five minutes, the Celtics found themselves down 14 and a quarter and a half away from losing home-court advantage.

"We are normally good in those situations," Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said. "We are normally able to control the game, grind it, take good shots, dictate the pace."

Enter Tony Allen and Glen Davis.

With Allen on Wade and Davis surveying Miami's offense, ready to pounce on anyone who attacked the lane, the Celtics exposed the Heat for what they are -- a team that cannot consistently create good looks, even with their best player drawing at least three sets of eyes at all times. With Boston swarming, the Heat only scored five points on five shots in the seven minutes after Wade's ninth point. Wade didn't take a shot.

"I'm just sticking with my team defense," Allen said. "Whatever the team needs in that situation, I just try to carry."

"The key for us was [his] defense on Wade," Pierce said.

What's encouraging about Boston's second-half performance was that after its intense third quarter, the team sustained the energy through the end of the game. Rarely, if ever, have the Celtics played at such a high level for so long after halftime this year.

"This was a good win for us in that way," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said. "That we showed some resolve, something that in the second half of the year we haven't had. When teams have made runs at us, we've been a team that's made one effort and then we kind of [say], 'It's too hard.'"

There is, however, a dark cloud casting a pall over the win. In the fourth quarter with Boston up six and just over a minute to play, Pierce was sprawled out on the floor near Miami's bench with a pinched nerve -- a chronic injury this season -- in his neck. As Kevin Garnett stood over his teammate, Quentin Richardson got into a bout of verbal, and physical, sparring with Garnett.

In the ensuing, shall we say, dissension, Udonis Haslem and Davis picked up technical fouls for following the, "If your teammate gets pushed, push someone else," line of thinking. Richardson, too, received a technical, but Garnett got a pair and was ejected after video replay revealed that he threw a sharp elbow at Richardson's head.

"He clearly made contact with Richardson," Official Joe DeRosa said. "But even if he had not he still would have been ejected for a second technical foul for throwing an elbow."

That Garnett made contact with the elbow makes a suspension inevitable, the only thing in doubt being the duration. Not only that, the Heat have now gained an emotional edge for having made Garnett lose his composure.

"I don't have any business talking to [Pierce]," Richardson said. "He was on the ground crying. I don't know what was going on. Two actresses there, that's what they are.

"They're not those characters they portray. They're not who they say they are, Garnett and Pierce. They're good basketball players and that's about it."

Garnett, at least, was accountable.

"You make your bed, you have to lay in it," Garnett said. "If I have to deal with it, then that is what it is."

Miami has other reasons not to hang their heads about the one that got away. The Heat's 22 turnovers were the most -- by four -- they've committed all season, and their 38 points allowed off turnovers were the most they've given up in more than a decade. Those numbers, not to mention sub-40 percent shooting -- 33 percent if you take away Wade's 11-of-18 -- are not likely to continue.

But neither are the six or seven shots the Celtics missed at the rim early in the game, a location where Boston shoots a league second-best 64 percent. And that's the takeaway from this toe in the postseason water: both teams did uncharacteristic things, but only Boston did uncharacteristically good things, those being during their prolonged 27-7 run.

So, the numbers should even out, but Boston was the more complete team. Now they'll have to show if they are without Garnett.
