Heat-76ers Preview

Tied for fifth in the Eastern Conference standings, the Miami Heat have a good chance of taking sole possession of that spot after their next game.

Continuing a stretch of nine straight contests versus sub-.500 teams to end the season, the Heat close out their road portion of their schedule Monday night when they go for a season sweep of the Philadelphia 76ers.

After having its nine-game winning streak snapped Friday against Detroit, Miami (45-35) bounced back with a 111-98 victory at New York on Sunday. Dwyane Wade scored a team-high 32 points and decided against getting X-rays on his right wrist following a first-half fall.

"I was the doctor on that one,'' Wade said. "I decided against it."

Wade and the surging Heat pulled into a tie with idle Milwaukee, which holds the tiebreaker with three wins in four matchups. The Heat, though, face Philadelphia (27-53) and NBA-worst New Jersey to end their regular season while the Bucks take on playoff-bound Atlanta and Boston.

Miami snapped a six-game losing streak in Philadelphia in its last visit there, a 105-78 victory on Feb. 16. Wade had 24 points with six rebounds and six assists, and the Heat held the 76ers to 37.9 percent shooting in their most lopsided victory in Philadelphia since a 28-point win on Feb. 18, 1997.

"A classic, classic butt-kicking,'' said 76ers coach Eddie Jordan.

Miami returns to Philadelphia looking to extend its road winning streak to eight. The Heat last accomplished that Dec. 6, 2004-Jan. 7, 2005.

Miami also gets a chance to equal that mark against a 76ers team coming off one of its most impressive victories of the season, 120-101 at Memphis on Saturday. Philadelphia had lost its previous six games by an average of 12.0 points.

The 76ers matched a franchise high with 14 3-pointers. Jason Kapono hit five from long distance and rookie Jodie Meeks was 4 of 7 from 3-point range.

"Any time a shooter gets a couple of shots to go down, it seems like he can't miss,'' said Meeks, a former Kentucky star. "If you knock a couple down, you want the ball again."

If the 76ers are going to win two straight for the first time since March 24-26, they'll likely have to shoot better than the 41.5 percent they've made in three previous losses to Miami.

Wade hasn't had many problems shooting against the 76ers, hitting 50.8 percent and averaging 28.0 points in the three wins. He needed just 29 minutes to score 24 points in the Feb. 16 victory.

Playing their final game at Wachovia Center this season, the 76ers are 12-28 there and will finish with their worst home record since going 11-30 in 1996-97.

Miami will try to sweep Philadelphia for the first time since 2005-06.

Wade a willing passer on game-winner as Heat nip Sixers

PHILADELPHIA (NBA.com exclusive) -- Dwyane Wade always wants the ball in his hands with the game in doubt.

But he'll pass it to Udonis Haslem on the baseline every single time, no matter the circumstances.

"We'll take that shot nine-and-a-half out of 10 times," Wade said.

What's the half for?

"In and out on one," Wade quipped.

Wade penetrated and kicked it to Haslem 15 feet away on the baseline for the game-winner with 1.3 seconds remaining, giving the Miami Heat a 107-105 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers before a crowd of 17,401 Monday night at the Wachovia Center.

Haslem rotated to his favorite spot on the floor. Wade had the ball at top of the key, drove right at Philadelphia's Andre Iguodala and then delivered a perfect pass to Haslem.

"I have always been comfortable from that spot on the floor," Haslem said. "Dwyane has confidence in me, and that's cool. I'm very confident from there. I just like the rhythm and I have made that shot 1,000 times in practice and quite a bit in the games."

The Heat moved to 46-35 overall and won for the eighth straight time on the road, tying a franchise record last set from Dec. 6, 2004-Jan. 7, 2005. Miami, which improved to 23-18 on the road, is gaining some momentum as it readies for the postseason for the 14th time in franchise history.

Wade led the way with 30 points on 12-for-19 shooting. Quentin Richardson had 15 points and 12 rebounds while Carlos Arroyo contributed 15 points and seven assists. Overall, the Heat shot a sizzling 56 percent and outrebounded the Sixers, 38-30.

"Our defense was not up to normal standard, but this game was more about our attitude and confidence that we have developed over the last few weeks and that expectancy that I have talked about," Miami coach Erik Spoelstra said.

The Heat won 111-98 at New York on Sunday and responded nicely in a back-to-back situation.

Especially on Philadelphia's last possession.

After Haslem's clutch shot, the Sixers still had 1.3 seconds remaining. Iguodala couldn't get a clean look and shot an air ball as the buzzer sounded.

"We have built up some pretty good habits, and this was at least a habit of learning how to stick around and win a game," Spoelstra said.

The Sixers (27-54) haven't won many games this season. They finished 12-29 in their building and wound up with third-fewest home wins in the league behind only Minnesota (10) and New Jersey (eight).

This loss came on a night when they did a lot of things right.

Jason Kapono scored a season-high 24 points and made his last nine field goals. Jodie Meeks tied his career-high with 21 points. Jrue Holiday had a career-high 13 assists, part of a Sixers record of 35 assists at the Wachovia Center. The Sixers even shot 55 percent.

And they still fell short.

"It kind of sums up the year," forward Elton Brand said. "We gave a lot of effort. We just couldn't close out games. We had a lead, and we had control of the game. We came out great in the third quarter. We just couldn't finish it."

It was the opposite reaction in the happy Heat locker room after another difficult road victory.

"We are a real confident team on the road," Haslem said. "I'm happy with how we're playing heading into the playoffs."
