Bulls-Raptors Preview

The Toronto Raptors have lost 17 of their last 24 games and won't have their superstar for the rest of the regular season after he suffered a facial fracture earlier this week.

In the race for the Eastern Conference's final playoff spot, that's still enough to keep them in the driver's seat - for now.

The Chicago Bulls have done little over the past week to take advantage of the Raptors' ongoing woes, but they'll get a chance to add to them Sunday at Air Canada Centre in a game that could all but decide the No. 8 seed.

Toronto (38-41) was in fifth place in the East and had its sights set on earning home-court advantage for the first round as of Feb. 23, when it held a 2 1/2-game lead on the sixth-place Bulls (38-41).

A 10-game losing streak with Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah sidelined dropped Chicago temporarily out of the playoff picture, while the Raptors have been in a prolonged slump.

Things appeared to be looking up after a three-game winning streak from March 29-April 3, but Toronto has lost its last four - the last three without Chris Bosh. The five-time All-Star suffered a nasal fracture in a loss at Cleveland on Tuesday, and the Raptors fell 115-104 to Boston the next night and 107-101 in Atlanta on Friday to briefly fall a half-game behind the Bulls.

"It ain't going our way, man,'' guard Sonny Weems said. "It's crazy.''

The Raptors caught a break less than an hour later. Chicago, which fell to Milwaukee on Tuesday before beating a Cleveland team without LeBron James on Thursday, lost 127-116 in double overtime at New Jersey - its second loss to the NBA-worst Nets.

"I hope this makes us stronger, because we have to play tougher to get into the playoffs,'' said Rose, who had 25 points before fouling out in the second overtime. "We just have to fight through it. The next one is very important. We only have a small amount of games and there is no room for error now.''

Toronto leads the season series 2-0, so it'll own the tiebreaker regardless of Sunday's result. The only way the Bulls can make the playoffs with a loss would be to close with wins over Boston and at Charlotte while the Raptors lose at Detroit and at home against the New York Knicks.

Should Chicago win Sunday, Toronto would only need the Bulls to slip up once provided it can win its last two.

"It's like a playoff game already,'' Weems said.

The Raptors have some injury concerns aside from Bosh, who had averaged 24.4 points, 12.6 rebounds and 2.6 steals in leading Toronto to five straight wins over Chicago. Hedo Turkoglu, averaging just 7.6 points in his last eight games, bumped heads with Boston's Tony Allen on Wednesday and is wearing a protective mask.

The bad luck continued when guard Antoine Wright sprained his ankle late in the third quarter against the Hawks. He's unlikely to play Sunday, leaving the Raptors without perhaps their best perimeter defender.

Noah, the Bulls' top defensive presence, is starting to see his minutes increase as he recovers from plantar fasciitis. He played nearly 36 minutes in the loss to the Nets - his most since Jan. 20 - but logged only 12 seconds spanning the two overtimes.

Coach Vinny Del Negro said that was because Noah had reached his 35-minute limit, but according to the Bulls' official Web site, general manager Gar Forman gave Del Negro the go-ahead to play Noah in the extra sessions.

Bulls top Raptors in showdown for last Eastern playoff spot

TORONTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- "How bad do we want it?"

That was the message scrawled on the whiteboard in the visiting locker room pregame.

As the Raptors learned very quickly, the Chicago Bulls wanted it badly enough.

Joakim Noah and Derrick Rose led the Bulls to a 104-88 victory over the Toronto Raptors, breaking a tie as they moved into sole possession of eighth place in the Eastern Conference playoff race with two games remaining for each team.

"Attack," Rose said of the mindset going into the game. "Attack no matter what. Play like it is the last game."

Both teams said they understood the importance of the game, but only one was able to play like it.

While the Raptors were able to keep the pace with Chicago in the first quarter, the absence of Chris Bosh and Antoine Wright was too much to overcome over 48 minutes.

"They were better than us, obviously," Jay Triano said, summing up the blowout loss that was a crushing blow to his already battered team.

Noah was an embodiment of the message written on the whiteboard. Keeping his teammates focused but fired up, he helped the Bulls double a five-point lead at the end of the first quarter into a 10-point advantage at the half and then made sure they didn't let up to start the third quarter.

"We really played hard," Noah said. "We played the right way. We followed the game plan and it was a question of the right intensity and I think we came with the right intensity tonight. I'm happy we got the W."

Noah was brilliant, finishing with 18 points, 19 rebounds and seven assists as his energy fueled his teammates in the second half, not giving them the option of letting up. Noah was active from the opening tip until he was pulled with less than two minutes remaining.

"I try every time to give it everything I've got," Noah said. "I just feel like they have their injury to their best post player so we just really tried to take advantage of Chris Bosh being out."

Toronto struggled from the floor, shooting just 41 percent for the game for the game. Sonny Weems and Andrea Bargnani scored 18 points apiece for the Raptors, but neither could find a steady rhythm. After saying all season that he needs the ball in his hands to be effective, Hedo Turkoglu had the ball and made the most of it, finishing with nine assists to go with a career-high 19 rebounds, but they didn't matter as the Raptors lost their opportunity to take full control of their playoff destiny.

With the Raptors unable to defend the Chicago pick and roll, Rose was able to get a clean look whenever he wanted it and he finished with a game-high 26 points to go with his seven assists.

Without Bosh and Wright, Toronto didn't have the bodies available to get into foul trouble. When Amir Johnson picked up his third personal at the 10:25 mark of the second quarter, the Raptors scrambled, at one point going small and playing Hedo Turkoglu and DeMar DeRozan upfront.

"When we got into foul trouble with Amir early, that put us in a situation where we had to go a little bit unconventional with our matchups and that is when they pulled away," Triano said.

The Bulls outscored Toronto 26-17 in the third and went into the fourth ahead by 19. The Raptors trailed by as many as 25 in the final quarter, with Triano clearing his bench midway through, perhaps thinking ahead to Toronto's game against the Pistons on Monday evening in Detroit.

With the victory, the Bulls move one game ahead of the Raptors, as each team has two games remaining. In the event of the two teams finishing with identical records, the Raptors would make the postseason as a result of the tiebreaker they own against the Bulls, winning the season series, 2-1.

Noah remembered the 110-78 thrashing that the Raptors dealt the Bulls in Chicago earlier this season, all too well.

"I actually got thrown out that game," Noah said smiling. "It wasn't a good time, [wasn't] a good memory. This, this is a much better memory."
