Suns-Thunder Preview

The Phoenix Suns can't afford to lose any momentum as they wrap up the regular season. They certainly don't want to have a letdown against a possible playoff opponent.

The Suns, looking to at least keep pace in the Western Conference, visit the Oklahoma City Thunder on Friday night.

Phoenix (51-27) has won 11 of 12 and 25 of 31, but needs to stay sharp over its last four games. The Suns are battling three teams for second place in the West.

Phoenix faces two of those clubs, Denver and Utah, next week. The matchups will likely help determine the Suns' first-round opponent.

That may very well end up being Oklahoma City (48-30), which is in a three-way tie for sixth in the conference.

Phoenix and Oklahoma City have each won a road game in this season's series. The Suns have won five straight on the road against the Thunder franchise and 10 of 11 overall meetings.

Phoenix is coming off a 112-101 victory over San Antonio on Wednesday night, reaching the 110-point mark for the 13th time in 19 games.

Though healthy and having a strong game, Suns point guard Steve Nash was rested for the entire fourth quarter. Backup Goran Dragic replaced him.

"One, it's important to give those guys confidence and, two, it gives us some rest," Nash said.

With the reserves playing so well, Jason Richardson also sat out the fourth quarter. The veteran guard has been bothered recently by a sore back, but had 20 points after being held scoreless in 22 minutes of a 107-98 loss to Milwaukee on Saturday night.

The Suns have played six straight games without starting center Robin Lopez (back). There is no timetable for his return.

Jarron Collins has given Phoenix little production in place of Lopez. Collins is averaging 0.8 points and 2.3 rebounds since joining the starting lineup.

Oklahoma City, though, lacks depth at center, as it starts Nenad Krstic. He was limited to four points in a 98-94 loss to Denver on Wednesday night.

Oklahoma City was held without a basket for the final 9 minutes.

"We didn't try to be aggressive," forward Jeff Green told the Thunder's official Web site. "But that's something we have to take into the next game and learn from and get better from."

The Thunder were coming off an emotional game, losing 140-139 in overtime to Utah the previous evening. The NBA admitted Wednesday that officials failed to call a foul that could have given Kevin Durant a chance to shoot the potential winning free throws.

Durant had an opportunity for redemption, but missed his final six shots versus the Nuggets. Durant, however, has averaged 39.3 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 45.5 percent (10 for 22) from 3-point range over his last three games.

Durant scored 37.0 points a game in two contests against the Suns this season.

Durant's 35 helps Thunder hold off Suns' rally

OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The last time the Oklahoma City Thunder played the Phoenix Suns they blew a 10-point lead late to lose by two.

Friday night inside a soldout Ford Center a 12-point Thunder lead melted down to just three with :29.4 left in the game. But this time the home team withstood the Suns challenge and held on for a thrilling 96-91 win.

"Big win for us," said Thunder All-Star Kevin Durant, "we went through a little adversity there late in the game but we got the win. We have to play hard every play, every time down the court and we did that at the end to hold them off."

Durant, the NBA's leading scorer, dropped 35 on the Suns to bring his scoring average up to 30.0 points a game.

"I really don't care about winning the scoring title, that's not what I'm trying to do," he told reporters after the game. "I'm just looking forward to competing and helping my team win games so we can get as high in the standings as we can."

The game had the look of a playoff matchup from the very beginning, each team coming out with energy and intensity, but the Suns had the better of it on the scoreboard at the start. They ran out to a 13-4 lead hitting their first five shots. But Phoenix (51-28) missed four of their next five and the Thunder (49-30) got back into it with a 9-1 run.

Durant led all scorers in the first 12 minutes with 13 points on 5-for-8 shooting. Jason Richardson led the Suns with 10 on 4-for-5 shooting, including 2-for-2 from long range.

The Thunder rolled to an eight point lead but the Suns reeled them back in to trail by only one at the half, 58-57.

Oklahoma City's defense struggled to contain Phoenix forward Amare Stoudemire who scored 17 points on 7-for-11 shooting in the half. Thunder big men Nick Collison, Serge Ibaka and Etan Thomas all took turns guarding Stoudemire to no avail.

Collison started the game at center in place of Nenad Krstic who was a last minute scratch because of a bruised knee. Collison spent most of the half on the bench with three fouls but Ibaka, the rookie and Thomas the veteran, had no answers for Stoudemire. In additon to his 17 first half points Stoudemire also blocked three shots and grabbed eight rebounds.

In the second half the Thunder began switching on Stoudemire and getting more aggressive. In the last 24 minutes Stoudemire scored only seven points to finish with 24 to lead the Suns.

"We didn't play good offensively in the second half," said Suns coach Alvin Gentry. "Some of it was their doing and some of it was our doing."

The Suns biggest problem was giving the ball away.

"We turned the ball over 20 times," Gentry said, "and that's not a team you can turn the ball over to 20 times, you have to get a shot off every time."

Oklahoma City's defense, a no-show recently, played well in a loss to Denver on Wednesday night and Friday night limited Phoenix to just 31.4% shooting in the second half.

"We were more active with our hands and were moving our feet," said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. "In the first half we got caught up in their style of play which is hard to maintain. So at halftime I told the guys we have to do what we do best, defend and score off our defense."

Thunder guard Thabo Sefolosha led the defensive charge but also scored 15 points.

"It was a huge win for us," he said, "that was playoff basketball. We did a good job of bothering them with our hands, coach had us switching on every one of their pick and rolls."

Jeff Green and rookie center Serge Ibaka also had 15 for the Thunder. Ibaka just missed a double-double with nine rebounds.

In addition to Stoudemire's 24, Jason Richardson added 12 and point gbuard Steve Nash contributed 11 along with 12 assists.

Oklahoma City finished the 3rd quarter on an 11-5 run to take a 79-69 lead into the final 12 minutes. Durant ended the run with a 3-pointer for his 30th point of the game, the 44th time this season he's had at least that many to lead the NBA.

"We knew Durant was get 35, he always gets 35...you just can't guard him, nobody can," said Gentry.

Both Phoenix and Oklahoma City are fighting for playoff positioning. The Suns still have a chance to host a first round series.

"We're going to keep fighting," Nash said, "We have three games left and we're going to try and win all three."

The Thunder have three games left also and probably can't get high enough in the standings to host a series but Durant and his teammates will try to get as high up in the standings as they can.

"We're not afraid of anybody we might play," said Durant who's battling several nagging bumps and bruises. "You get knocked down a lot, so I'm playing through some things. There's a difference between being injured and being hurt. A lot of guys are hurt at this point in the season. We just have to keep fighting."

After winning just 43 games the last two seasons combined the Thunder franchise is on the verge of winning 50 games.

"It would be a great accomplishment," said Brooks, "we have a chance to get 52 so we'll see if we can."
