Pistons-76ers Preview

Two years removed from meeting in the first round of the playoffs, the Detroit Pistons and Philadelphia 76ers are winding down their worst seasons in more than a decade.

Detroit takes an 11-game losing streak into Philadelphia on Tuesday night in a matchup of teams headed for the draft lottery.

The Pistons are at the point of being happy with moral victories, like the one they felt after Saturday's 91-85 road loss to playoff-bound Atlanta. Detroit (23-53) had a season-low three turnovers.

"I think we competed," coach John Kuester said. "It was good to see that we took care of the basketball."

The Pistons, guaranteed to finish with their worst record since going 28-54 in 1994-95, are mired in their second double-digit losing streak of the season. They dropped 13 straight Dec. 15-Jan. 11.

It's possible Detroit will be very short-handed again after taking the floor Saturday without Richard Hamilton (ankle), Ben Wallace (knees) and Jason Maxiell (back).

"We played our heart out," said Kwame Brown, who had eight points and eight rebounds in his first start of the season.

Ben Gordon went scoreless in 22 minutes and is averaging 8.4 points during Detroit's 11-game skid on the road, which began after a victory at Sacramento on Feb. 23.

Also since that day, the 76ers are 4-16 overall - 2-9 at home.

Philadelphia appeared to be a team on the rise after losing in six games to Detroit in a 2008 opening-round series and giving eventual conference champion Orlando a tough six-game series last year. Instead, the Sixers (26-50) have taken a turn for the worse and will end up with at least their most losses since going 31-51 in 1997-98.

Like the Pistons, Philadelphia is coming off a good effort in a defeat to a team in playoff position, rallying from 17 down to force overtime before falling 128-123 to Toronto on Saturday.

"They might have needed it more but, we definitely wanted that win more," said forward Elton Brand, who failed to grab a rebound for the first time in his career.

Brand is averaging 17.8 points in the past four home games compared to 9.0 in his last five on the road. He led six Sixers in double figures with 25 points in a 104-94 win at Detroit on Jan. 9 in the most recent meeting.

The previous matchup in Philadelphia this season resulted in one of the Pistons' seven road wins, 90-86 on Dec. 9 behind Rodney Stuckey's 27 points.

Stuckey will be matched up against rookie point guard Jrue Holiday, coming off a career-high 25-point night Saturday.

Holiday's starting backcourt mate, Andre Iguodala, had 33 points, 11 assists and eight rebounds against Toronto. He has averaged 21.7 points, 7.2 assists and 6.7 boards over the last six games.

Pistons break out for big win over 76ers, end 11-game skid

PHILADELPHIA (NBA.com exclusive) -- For one rare night, everything clicked for the Detroit Pistons.

Despite being heavily shorthanded, the Pistons placed seven players in double figures and racked up a season-high in points on their way to a stunning 124-103 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Tuesday before a crowd of 13,832 at the Wachovia Center.

Richard Hamilton, Chris Wilcox and Jason Maxiell were unavailable because of injuries. Starting guard Rodney Stuckey took a knee to the left rib with 5:11 left in the third quarter.

The Pistons already were mired in some minor controversy with Charlie Villanueva and Austin Daye missing the team's charter to Philadelphia. Villanueva and Daye had to schedule their own commercial flights to get to Philadelphia.

All of this turned into a 21-point win and a season-best 63 percent performance from the field, including 8-for-17 from 3-point territory. The Pistons' previous season-high in points was 110, which had occurred three times.

Oh, and Detroit snapped a maddening 11-game losing streak as it improved to 24-53.

"We moved the ball and it was contagious," said Villanueva, who led the way with a game-high 25 points. "The guys showed a lot of life and a lot of energy. It was great to see."

Stuckey finished with 24 points while Ben Wallace added a season-high 18 points on 8-for-10 shooting.

The Pistons recorded 27 assists on 47 field goals and committed just 10 turnovers.

"We almost only have seven guys because of injuries," Detroit coach John Kuester said. "We distributed the ball and we were very efficient."

Detroit managed to snap a losing streak in double digits for the second time this season. It also lost 13 straight from Dec. 15-Jan. 11.

On just about every possession, the ball moved in and out and side to side with precision.

"It's always fun when you play the right way, especially in the second half," Kuester said. "We had 61 points in the first half. It's an awful lot of points to have. Even in the third quarter, we locked in defensively. It was good to get the win."

For the Sixers (26-51), it was their fourth straight defeat.

Marreese Speights scored 21 points and Jodie Meeks added 19 points off the bench, but they simply couldn't stop the Pistons.

In his postgame press conference, Sixers coach Eddie Jordan said he was particularly disappointed with forward Elton Brand and center Samuel Dalembert. They each played 12 minutes, 32 seconds.

"I just wasn't happy with their play and that's flat-out," Jordan said.

Forward Andre Iguodala, who had 12 points, doesn't believe that the Sixers have stopped playing hard.

"We are going through some tough times, but we have to continue to go out there and play games the right way," Iguodala said. "We have to keep our minds on the task at hand. ... While we are here, we need to be on the same page and get through the growing pains."

The Pistons sure seemed be on the same page en route to only their eighth road victory this season.

Villanueva, specifically, looked a lot more like the player whose career-high is a scorching 48 points.

"It had been one of those years where I wasn't making shots," Villanueva said. "I am getting the looks but they haven't been going in. They went in tonight. I plan to keep shooting and that is always my mentality. This will help build my confidence."
