Hawks-Bobcats Preview

With the franchise's first postseason appearance in sight, the Charlotte Bobcats are just hoping to stay healthy down the stretch.

The banged-up Bobcats look to bounce back from their latest loss when they host the playoff-bound Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.

Charlotte (40-36) is seventh in the Eastern Conference with six games to play, but can still finish as high as fifth or miss the playoffs altogether. In their quest to avoid the latter, the Bobcats are trying to overcome nagging injuries to stars Stephen Jackson and Gerald Wallace.

Jackson has been plagued by hamstring, ankle, elbow and hand ailments. A day after scoring 32 points in a win over Milwaukee, Jackson was held to eight and missed the fourth quarter of Saturday's 96-88 loss at Chicago. The ninth-place Bulls crept within three games of the Bobcats.

"Hopefully, we get that luxury to (clinch a playoff berth) and I'll be able to rest a game or two,'' said Jackson, averaging 21.3 points in 67 games since Charlotte acquired him from Golden State in a November trade.

"But right now we've got to try to continue win and win out.''

The Bobcats are set to play four games in five nights, but Jackson expects to keep playing through the pain. He's averaging 21.5 points in two games this season against Atlanta (49-27), which has already clinched a playoff berth.

"I've dealt with injuries a lot, but not at this magnitude at this part of the season,'' Jackson said. "I've got to be mentally tough, but I'll get through it.''

Wallace (18.4 points, 10.4 rebounds per game) hopes to do the same as he tries to play through various injuries. He's managed to do so thus far, missing only five games this season.

"It's April, everybody in the league is hurting right now,'' said Wallace, who's scored 45 points in his last two games versus the Hawks. "You want to be sore right now and still playing for something.''

Charlotte likely will need strong contributions from both Jackson and Wallace if it is to avoid a third straight loss to Atlanta, which is trying to win 50 games for the first time since 1997-98.

"Being a 50-win team means you're pretty good, but we won't be satisfied with that,'' Hawks reserve Jamal Crawford said. "We'll continue to try to build on what we've done and try to get some steam going into the playoffs.''

While the Hawks are trying to hold on to the third-best record in the East - they lead Boston by one game - they're also seeking to avoid a fifth straight road loss overall and third in a row at Charlotte. Atlanta is 2-9 all-time on the road against the Bobcats.

Crawford, who shared a team high with 13 points in a 103-83 loss at Charlotte on Nov. 6, had 29 in the Hawks' 91-85 home win over Detroit on Saturday.

In his first season in Atlanta, Crawford is second on the team with 17.8 points per game, and is a strong candidate for the NBA's sixth-man award. He's averaging 26.8 points in his last four visits to Charlotte.

The Hawks also have a key player nursing an injury. Leading scorer Joe Johnson (21.2 ppg) will miss at least this game and Wednesday's trip to Detroit after sitting out Saturday with a sprained right thumb.

Bobcats hold off Hawks to inch closer to playoffs

CHARLOTTE (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Charlotte Bobcats saw a team in trouble and took advantage Tuesday.

Gerald Wallace scored 28, and Boris Diaw had 17 points, nine rebounds and nine assists, to lead Charlotte to a 109-100 victory over the short-handed Atlanta Hawks at Time Warner Cable Arena.

"It's a great win," Diaw said. "At this point every win is pretty important as we chase the playoffs and try to get as high as possible in the playoffs, too."

The win gives Charlotte its 41st victory on the season and guarantees the club its first winning record in its sixth season of existence. The Bobcats are also inching toward their first postseason appearance. Charlotte's magic number for clinching the playoffs is now two after its win and Chicago's loss at Milwaukee on Tuesday.

Charlotte jumped out of the gates early against the Hawks. Wallace scored eight points in a 10-0 run which pushed the lead to double digits early. Charlotte would maintain that double-digit edge for all but one possession of the first three quarters.

Atlanta was without the services of its starting backcourt Tuesday. Mike Bibby was sidelined due to the removal of an ingrown toenail while Joe Johnson was out with a sprained right thumb. In addition, the Hawks lost the services of Zaza Pachulia late in the second quarter to a hip flexor.

"That's two of our starters," Atlanta coach Mike Woodson said. "They are a big part of what we do, but when other guys get an opportunity to play, they have to be ready."

"We're not worried about their team," Wallace said. "We were worried about our team tonight. The season is almost over. If we're going to do something, the time is now. It's time to prove we deserve to be in the playoffs. We've got five games left."

Charlotte continued to dominate the first half and led by 23 at the break after a successful three-point play by Tyson Chandler.

"There were a lot of positives that happened in tonight's game," Charlotte coach Larry Brown said. "We played great in the first half and got a great win. We needed that. Every time we get a win like that it's a step closer to getting in the playoffs and that's our goal."

Raymond Felton quieted a Hawks mini-run to open the half with a three from the corner which put the Bobcats back in front 73-56.

"I like the way we picked it up," Woodson said. "We were more aggressive offensively and really pushed the ball. I like the way we competed in the second half."

The Hawks continued to mount a comeback. Mo Evans' 3-pointer late in the quarter pulled Atlanta within 10, 82-72, but Wallace answered right back for Charlotte with a layup.

"We're taking care of business," Stephen Jackson said. "We got off to a big lead, but we let them get back into the game, which we need to fix. We just have to continue to win games."

Charlotte again started off hot in the fourth quarter and built its lead to as many as 15 points. Evans would again lead a mini comeback for the Hawks.

Evans, who finished with a team-best 20 points, sank his fourth three of the game to pull the Hawks within single digits at 93-84. The Bobcats, however, were able to pull away and never allow Atlanta to seriously challenge for the remainder of the game.

"We've got to treat every game like a playoff game now because we haven't clinched anything yet," Felton said. "Every game is important for us. We've got to go. It's right there in reach for us. We have to continue what we're doing."
