Rockets-Pacers Preview

The Houston Rockets won't be heading to the playoffs for the first time in four years, but they're still focused on ending this season in positive fashion.

Matchups with the Indiana Pacers over the past two seasons, though, haven't yielded any victories.

The Rockets will try to snap a three-game slide to the Pacers and become only the second opponent to win at Conseco Fieldhouse in a little more than five weeks Sunday.

Despite a 119-114 victory in Boston on Friday night, Houston (38-37) was eliminated from postseason contention with San Antonio's victory over Orlando later that evening.

The Rockets' win was impressive considering starters Trevor Ariza (flu-like symptoms), Kevin Martin (sprained shoulder), Shane Battier (MCL sprain) were out of the lineup. The team is also missing Jared Jeffries (strained Achilles'), David Andersen (back) and All-Star center Yao Ming (foot surgery).

Those injuries have contributed to Houston losing six of nine, but its attitude may have changed after this latest victory. The Rockets are trying to finish with their fourth straight winning campaign - their longest streak since a run of seven in a row from 1990-91 to 1996-97.

"We finally realized how important it is to win these kind of games and how much good you're going to get for it if we play like this through the end of the season," forward Luis Scola said. "It's great and we've got to keep going. We've got seven more and we have to keep playing the same way."

The Rockets, though, haven't played winning basketball against the Pacers (28-48) since March 5, 2008. They've also lost in three of their last four trips to Conseco.

They'll face a Pacers team that's lost once there since Feb. 26, but that defeat snapped an eight-game home win streak Friday night.

Indiana couldn't build on its 10-point halftime lead against Miami and fell 105-96 in overtime. The Pacers were outscored 16-7 in the extra session with Heat star Dwyane Wade registering eight of his 43 points.

"Very tough loss," forward Troy Murphy said. "We couldn't get it done at the end when it really counted."

While Murphy has averaged 19 points over the past nine home games, Danny Granger has stepped up even more with 31.3 points per game - 7.1 above his season average.

Granger has also helped Indiana average 105.8 points over that span - nearly six points more than its season average.

The Rockets, meanwhile, have yielded an average of 108.4 points on 51 percent shooting over their last eight games. They also allowed Indiana to record its second-highest scoring output this season in a 125-115 home loss Feb. 20. Granger scored 36 points, and T.J. Ford added 23 off the bench in that win.

The Pacers, who have dropped two of three since a season high-tying five-game win streak, are trying to avoid moving a step closer to their first 50-loss season since 1988-89.

Balanced Pacers cruise past Rockets for 133-102 victory

INDIANAPOLIS (NBA.com exclusive) -- -- Forget the record. Forget the standings, too. As the NBA season nears its end, the Indiana Pacers are playing very well.

That's particularly true at home.

And as a 133-102 victory early Sunday night over the Houston Rockets at Conseco Fieldhouse showed yet again, while swingman Danny Granger -- one of the NBA's hottest players during the last month -- is a major reason, he's not the only one.

When the Pacers (29-48) play well these days, they're balanced.

They move the ball well.

They shoot well.

And as was the case Sunday, they look like a team with a brighter future than recent past.

"It's very important," Granger said of a recent stretch of eight victories in 11 games, a stretch that has included victories over four teams -- Charlotte, Oklahoma City, Utah and Houston -- with .500 records or better.

"First of all, we've been beating teams that are in the playoffs and battling for playoff position. We've been beating teams we're supposed to beat. We lost to Miami in overtime (Friday), so we've been playing well. We've got to carry it over into next season.

"It's important to establish that type of basketball."

The victory was the ninth in the last 10 games for Indiana at home, with the lone loss during that span coming Friday in a game in which Miami guard Dwyane Wade turned in a game-turning performance in the second half and overtime.

On Sunday, there was no player such as Wade in the game.

And as a result, once the Pacers took control early, they pulled away with a balanced, spread-the-floor offense. Houston (38-38) never led after midway through the first quarter, and the Rockets -- after beating Boston 119-114 in overtime Friday -- never got closer than 13 in the second half.

"Very poor effort," Rockets coach Rick Adelman said. "As good as our effort was the other night, it was just the opposite today."

The Pacers' victory also had a decided Final Four theme.

Actually, make that a Duke theme.

With Duke playing hometown favorite Butler in the NCAA Championship Game on Monday at Lucas Oil Stadium in downtown Indianapolis, the three Duke players on the Pacers roster -- Josh McRoberts, Mike Dunleavy, Jr., and Dhantay Jones -- all had big games Sunday.

All three did so off the bench, with Dunleavy scoring 15 points, Jones scoring 11 and McRoberts scoring 18 and finishing with 12 rebounds. Dunleavy shot 6 of 10, Jones shot 4 of 4 and McRoberts shot 8 of 9, including 2 of 3 from 3-point range.

McRoberts' 8-of-9 performance was the best single-game shooting effort of the season by a Pacers player, and his double-double was the third of his career.

All three are planning to attend Monday's title game.

The Duke trio was just part of a balanced Pacers offense, with Granger continuing his recent streak of effective offense with 18 points on 6-of-16 shooting from the field.

"We're moving, getting good shots and executing," Granger said. "Our defense has been better than it has been all year. That's why we've been winning games."

Forward Troy Murphy had 17 points and 12 rebounds for Indiana, and point guard Earl Watson had 10 points and five assists. Backup point guard A.J. Price had 17 points, with center Roy Hibbert leading the Pacers 20 points and 11 rebounds.

"My teammates found me and I was able to knock some in," Hibbert said. "We want to continue playing this way the rest of the season."

While the Pacers have shot better the last month of the season than they did early, Pacers' coach Jim O'Brien said he didn't quite expect Sunday's performance. The Pacers shot 49 of 85, including 53.8 percent -- 14 of 26 -- from 3-point range, and O'Brien said the consistency of the shooting for Indiana was critical. The Pacers shot 54.5 percent in the first quarter, 75 percent in the second, then after shooting 39.1 percent in the third, shot 65 percent to pull away for one of the team's dominant performances of the season.

The Pacers' 133 points and 57.6 shooting for the game were season-highs.

"We slipped up on our assignments," Rockets guard Aaron Brooks said. "We definitely didn't go out and execute our assignments. Every time we made a mistake, they made a shot. They were on fire tonight."

Said Rockets swingman Chase Budinger, "We had no intensity this game. I can't explain what it was or why we were like that, but nothing came our way."
