As the Atlanta Hawks prepare themselves for a third consecutive playoff appearance, the Detroit Pistons look to prevent an already disappointing season from getting any worse.

With their eight-year playoff streak about to end, the Pistons hope to avoid an 11th straight loss when they visit the Hawks on Saturday night.

Riddled with injuries to some key players in the final weeks of a frustrating season, Detroit (23-52) will miss the playoffs for the first time since the 2000-01 season. Making matters worse, the Pistons are mired in their longest losing stretch since dropping 13 in a row from Dec. 15-Jan. 11.

The Pistons haven't won since a 101-87 victory over Washington - one of two teams worse than them in the Eastern Conference - on March 12.

Detroit allowed Phoenix to shoot 56.2 percent in a 109-94 home loss to the surging Suns on Friday. Opponents are shooting 53.7 percent and averaging 108.7 points during the Pistons' 10-game skid.

"It's been a disappointing season, no doubt about it," said Ben Gordon, who scored 21 points against the Suns but is averaging 13.1 during a frustrating first season with Detroit. "I just think, not only for myself but us as a team, we need to compete as hard as we can these last few games and try to go into the summer on a good note."

The Pistons would have an easier time doing that if they can find enough bodies to take the court for the final few games of the season. Star Richard Hamilton (18.1 points per game) could miss his third straight game Saturday with an ankle injury, while forwards Jason Maxiell and Chris Wilcox remain day-to-day with back injuries.

"Anybody that's got a uniform is going to play - has got to be ready to play," coach John Kuester told the Pistons' official Web site. "And that's important."

The Pistons, who have also lost 10 straight away from home, look to avoid a fourth consecutive loss at Atlanta. The Hawks (48-27) are 31-7 this season at Philips Arena, where they've won a season-high nine in a row.

Though Detroit beat Atlanta 94-88 on Nov. 29, Joe Johnson had 26 points and Josh Smith added 18 with 11 assists in the Hawks' 112-99 home win that started the Pistons' current winless stretch March 13.

Smith had 20 points Friday, but Atlanta shot 41.1 percent in a 93-88 loss at East-leading Cleveland. The Hawks were done in by a late 14-0 Cleveland run, losing for the fourth time in 12 contests.

"It's definitely frustrating,'' said Smith, who's averaging 20.0 points, 7.7 rebounds, 5.0 assists and 3.3 blocks in his last three games versus Detroit. "You don't want to come close and not win. It's a learning lesson. We have to be able to finish games with the best of them."

Trying to hold on to the third seed in the East, Atlanta has not lost consecutive games since March 6-8.

The Pistons and Hawks conclude their season series Wednesday at Detroit.

Hawks take care of business, hand Pistons 11th loss in row

ATLANTA (NBA.com exclusive) -- There were times Saturday night, particularly in the third quarter, when the Hawks appeared to lose track of their mission statement and the Pistons were happy on those occasions to punish Atlanta for inattention.

There were not enough of those moments to keep the Hawks (49-27) from winning and they eventually did what any team hoping to stay ahead of the Celtics (47-28) for the No. 3 spot in the playoff pecking order should do to a team woefully under-staffed in the middle.

They handed the Pistons their 11th straight loss, 91-85, with a 59-43 rebounding edge and an even more sizable advantage on the offensive glass.

Jamal Crawford scored 29 points with the help of a season-high six 3-pointers while coming off the Atlanta bench to help make up for the absence of All-Star guard Joe Johnson (sprained thumb). Big men Josh Smith and Al Horford combined for 33 points while grabbing 14 rebounds each.

Given that the Pistons were without big men Jason Maxiell (back strain) and Ben Wallace (sore knees), and center Kwame Brown was making his first start of the season, the Hawks did what they had to do.

With Johnson in street clothes after he sprained his thumb in Friday's loss at Cleveland and with the Pistons thin in the middle, Atlanta ran fewer isolations. "[We] were able to run the pick-and-roll successfully," said Smith, who scored 13 points. "We just stuck to [the game plan]."

Horford scored 14 of his 20 points in the first half as Atlanta took a 54-45 lead.

"Especially when Kwame Brown went to the bench [the Pistons were under-staffed in the paint]," said Atlanta coach Mike Woodson. "They had [Charlie] Villaneuva and [Jonas] Jerebko [as bigs] and we had Al and Josh Smith; hey, why not post those guys? I thought in the first half we took advantage of Al Horford. Teams that are short-handed like that with bigs, you got to take advantage of them."

Considering the Pistons entered Philips Arena having lost 17 of 19, and the fact that leading scorer Rip Hamilton (sprained ankle) missed his third game, few might have predicted that Detroit would hang around let alone take a third-quarter lead.

On a night where the visitors kept themselves in the game with a season-low five turnovers, the Hawks coughed it up that many times during Detroit's 24-9 run in the third. Jerebko scored nine of his 11 points in that stretch, and his layup -- off a bad pass by Atlanta rookie point guard Jeff Teague -- with 3:29 remaining in the period put the Pistons on top 70-69.

"I think we competed," said Detroit coach John Kuester. "You have to play this way against everybody, not just the best teams in the league. If you play like this, good things will happen."

Without Johnson, Atlanta's offense was at times tepid when not working through the paint until Crawford got jiggy in the fourth quarter and Detroit ran out of Pistons.

The leading candidate for Sixth Man of the Year scored 10 points in the final period, and the Hawks (49-27) clamped down while holding Detroit to 11 points in the entire quarter. The Pistons made just four of 21 shots in the period, and Ben Gordon missed all three of his shot attempts in the fourth and went scoreless in the game.

"At certain points in the game, I was more aggressive," said Crawford, who two of his 3-pointers in the fourth quarter. "And we did a good job going inside to Smoove [Smith] and Al. I think it opened up the floor a little bit more for everybody."

Rodney Stuckey led Detroit with 22, and Tayshaun Prince added 17, but the Pistons lost the battle inside. Atlanta rebounded 14 of its own 38 missed shots while Detroit had just 11 offensive rebounds off 53 misses.

"Any win is a good win," said Woodson, who clearly is not looking for style points as his team is 1.5 games ahead of the Celtics. "A win is important at this particular time. Some wins look good . . . and some are ugly. Tonight, we played pretty well in spurts. We played well enough to win."

Notes: Woodson said it wasn't clear whether Johnson will be available for Tuesday's game at Philadelphia, where the Hawks will try to reach the 50-win plateau for the first time in 12 years (Atlanta was 50-32 in 1997-'98). "That would be huge," Crawford said. "Being a 50-win team means you're pretty good." . . . Maurice Evans scored 10 points starting in Johnson's place.
