Bulls-Wizards Preview

The Chicago Bulls have taken advantage of a lighter stretch in their schedule to stay alive for the final playoff spot in the Eastern Confidence.

Before the slate becomes more challenging, the Bulls on Friday night visit the last-place Washington Wizards, who look to record back-to-back wins for the first time since mid-February.

Chicago (35-39) is two games behind Toronto for the final postseason berth. The Raptors, who are idle Friday, own the tiebreaker and will host the Bulls on April 11.

Following a 10-game losing streak, the Bulls have won four of their last six to stay close to Toronto in the standings. The victories all came against teams with records at or below .500.

However, Chicago has split two games against Washington (22-52) this season with each team victorious at home. The Bulls are looking to avoid another setback in the nation's capital especially since this is one of two remaining games against opponents with losing records.

Chicago has had to contend with injuries recently, although that situation seems to be getting better. Joakim Noah continues to improve after being limited over the last month because of plantar fasciitis, and Luol Deng - out the last 11 games with a calf strain - is expected to return either Friday or Saturday against Charlotte, according to the Bulls' official Web site.

Chicago is also optimistic that Kirk Hinrich, who sat out the second half of the Bulls' 111-105 loss to Phoenix on Tuesday with a sprained ankle, will be available to face Washington.

Derrick Rose and Flip Murray each scored 23 points in the loss as Chicago gave up 14 3-pointers.

"We have not been able to get over the hump against some of the better teams," coach Vinny Del Negro said. "It just comes down to getting some stops. Thirty points is too many (to allow) in the fourth quarter."

The Bulls also failed to contain the Wizards the last time the two met, allowing them to shoot 50.6 percent in a 101-95 loss on Feb. 22.

Andray Blatche scored 25 points in what has turned out to be Washington's most recent win at the Verizon Center, where the Wizards will try to snap an eight-game slide.

Blatche will be looking for another big game as he continues to shine late in the season. He's averaging 22.6 points over the last five games and scored 23 in Washington's 96-91 win over New Orleans on Wednesday.

That halted a franchise-record 16-game losing streak and was the Wizards' first win since Feb. 28. They shot 55.9 percent and got 27 points and seven rebounds from Mike Miller.

"People were saying we were not going to get a win in March, and we got one," guard Nick Young said. "We got that monkey off our back and we have to keep going."

The Wizards haven't won consecutive games since Feb. 17 and 19 against Minnesota and Denver, respectively.

Bulls keep pressure on Raptors with win in Washington

WASHINGTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- Chicago Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro is happy that Luol Deng is back after missing 11 games with a strained calf muscle. And he's ecstatic that the plantar fasciitis that has hobbled double-double machine Joakim Noah is finally starting to relent.

But the bottom line for Del Negro and his Bulls these days is getting wins and moving on to the next game as the team tries to hit the tape ahead of the Toronto Raptors and qualify for the eighth and final spot in the Eastern Conference playoffs, which begin later this month. The Bulls are 1.5 games out of the eighth spot.

Friday night in Washington the Bulls took one step closer to their goal, defeating the woeful Wizards behind a solid defensive effort. The Bulls (36-39) eliminated any chance that the Wizards might have had at getting their first win at home since they defeated Chicago back on Feb. 22 by holding the Wizards to just 12 points in the fourth quarter. Washington was just 2-for-16 in the fourth quarter (12.5 percent) and a paltry 32-for-83 (37.6 percent) for the game.

"It was a good win for us. Any win now is a good win," Del Negro said after being asked about working in the injured players. "We don't have time for an adjustment period. We play tomorrow night. Guys are going to just have to battle through it. We'll see who is healthy and who is feeling good tomorrow and those are the guys who will be out there. We're going to need everybody and whoever can go will be out there. We're going to need everybody every day."

Guard Derrick Rose is among the walking wounded but he didn't look anything like it against the Wizards. Playing with a sore wrist and hip, Rose logged more than 40 minutes and finished with a game-high 24 points and five assists. Rookie forward Taj Gibson continued to be a pleasant surprise for the Bulls, notching 14 points and a game-high 16 rebounds for his sixth double-double in the last seven games. Deng came off the bench for 14 points and six rebounds, Noah added 10 points and eight boards, and Kirk Hinrich added 10 points and five assists.

The Bulls didn't exactly set the world on fire in the fourth -- they scored just 19 points themselves -- but it was enough to win. And right now that's fine for the Bulls.

"Hey, a win is a win and we'll take it whether if it's by 10 points or by a basket," Rose said. "A last-second shot or whatever, we're just trying to find ways to win and that's what we're doing. We're getting our guys back and we're just fighting. I'm feeling good. I'll be kinda sore tomorrow but this is the homestretch for us."

Meaning?

"Every game is like a playoff game from here out. I remind everybody of that every day. The Wizards are in a rebuilding mode but we couldn't afford to look past them. Can't look past anybody. They were tough. We tried to take control of the game but we weren't able to do it until the end."

Andray Blatche led the Wizards with 18 points and 15 rebounds and now has 13 double-doubles on the season. Mike Miller, who scored the Wizards' final field goal of the game when he hit a 3-pointer with 4:26 to play, finished with 15 points, seven assists and five rebounds. JaVale McGee came off the bench to score 13 points, grab nine rebounds and block three shots, and Shaun Livingston and Nick Young scored 12 and 10, respectively.

Wednesday the Wizards ended their franchise-record 16-game losing streak with a win at New Orleans, but Friday they set another futility record with the team's ninth consecutive home loss, eclipsing the previous record of eight consecutive home losses from Dec. 17 1966 to Jan. 8 1967.

The streak is so long that one of the team's starters, Livingston, signed in the second half of the season after a pair of 10-day contracts and has yet to experience a victory in the Verizon Center.

"Yeah, that's kind of rough," Livingston said. "Chicago is in a different place. They are playing trying to make the playoffs, and you could see the difference in the second half. But it's no different for us. I want to win games. We want to win games. We wanted to win this one and string two together. "
