Suns-Nets Preview

After five months, the New Jersey Nets finally earned their 10th win - a mark that will prevent the team from earning the distinction of the worst in NBA history.

By comparison, the Phoenix Suns nearly have the same number of victories in their last 10 games alone.

Fresh off clinching a playoff berth, the surging Suns look to win their ninth in a row Wednesday night when they visit the Nets.

By earning its eighth straight victory and 16th in 19 games - 111-105 on Tuesday at Chicago - Phoenix (48-26) secured its fifth playoff berth in six years. Despite playing with a sore back and a case of the sniffles, Steve Nash scored seven of his 22 points in the final two minutes and finished with 10 assists.

"If I'm honest, I was taking so many meds for my back and cold that I actually felt a little loopy for most of the game,'' Nash said.

Jason Richardson scored 27 points Tuesday and Amare Stoudemire added 21 for the Suns, who haven't won nine in a row since a franchise-record 17-game run Dec. 29, 2006-Jan. 28, 2007. The current streak has vaulted them from seventh in the Western Conference to fourth, one-half game ahead of fifth-place Utah.

Phoenix is averaging 120.3 points per game during its eight consecutive victories.

While the Suns are trying to secure home court for a first-round playoff series, the Nets' postseason aspirations ended long ago.

New Jersey (10-64) notched its 10th victory - a mark Phoenix reached in its 12th game - with Monday's 90-84 win over short-handed San Antonio.

While 10 wins are hardly reason to celebrate, Monday's victory means the Nets can no longer tie the worst record in NBA history. New Jersey appeared poised to set the record after opening the season with an NBA-record 18-game losing streak, and reaching the season's midpoint with three wins. However, after Monday's victory - the Nets' third in four games - the 1972-73 Philadelphia 76ers and their 9-73 mark are assured of remaining in the record books alone.

"We don't want to be a part of the worst team in history, so it's exciting to get 10 wins, but it is 10 wins, you know what I mean?'' point guard Devin Harris said. "It's fun. We haven't won that many games, so we are excited to win. We are continuing to move forward."

Brook Lopez, who led New Jersey on Monday with 22 points and 12 rebounds, has been a good indicator of his team's fortunes recently. Lopez is averaging 28.3 points and 11.7 rebounds in the Nets' last three wins, compared to 15.6 points and 6.7 boards in their last nine losses.

Although the Nets have three wins in the last week, they haven't exactly beaten the best teams, defeating Sacramento, Detroit and a Spurs teams without Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker.

New Jersey is showing some signs of improvement on the defensive end, allowing an average of 94.8 points on 42.7 percent shooting in the last four games after yielding an average of 104.8 points on 50.8 percent shooting in their previous eight - all losses.

In the other meeting between these teams this season, Stoudemire had 27 points and Richardson added 26 in the Suns' 118-94 win Jan. 20 in Phoenix.

Streaking Suns pick up ninth straight win in New Jersey

EAST RUTHERFORD (NBA.com exclusive) -- Team temperature can be a relative thing.

Hot for the Nets means a last-ditch effort to get out of the NBA cellar. For the Suns however, hot is winning nine straight games after a 116-105 victory over New Jersey on Wednesday night at the IZOD Center to keep pace with the elite of the Western Conference.

"This team is battling for playoff position and this game really means something to them," Nets interim coach Kiki Vandeweghe said of the Suns. "We had to have great focus and intensity for 48 minutes. Unfortunately, we had it for about 42 minutes."

Jason Richardson scored 12 of his 23 points in a breakaway third quarter for the Suns, while Steve Nash recorded 24 points and 14 assists. The Suns, who had 11 3-pointers on the night, were trailing the Jazz by ½-game for third place in the West, with Utah hosting Golden state on Wednesday night.

New Jersey, which won its 10th game of the season with its surprising 90-84 decision over the Spurs, has had thoughts of catching the Timberwolves to avoid having the worst record in the NBA this season - despite the fact it would hurt the team's chances of landing the No. 1 pick in the draft. But as of now, the Nets (10-65) still trail Minnesota (15-60) with each team having seven games to play.

Rookie Terrence Williams was a bright spot for New Jersey, with his career-high 21 points. Brook Lopez had 19 points and eight rebounds, while Courtney Lee and Kris Humphries had 17 points apiece. Devin Harris, playing with a sore back, was held to nine points on 2-of-10 shooting.

Despite the Suns' scorching play of late, they still entered a little tired coming off Tuesday night's 111-105 win over the Bulls. The Nets took advantage early on, leading by seven in the second quarter and taking a 53-50 lead into halftime.

"They were doing everything they could do to prevent me from getting the ball," said Suns forward Amar'e Stoudemire, who finished with 15 points.

After their mid-game respite, the Suns recovered and opened the third quarter with a game-defining 13-0 run. Phoenix had a 63-53 lead and opened it to an 86-71 edge by the end of the period, having outscored the Nets, 38-23, in the frame.

"It was tough, especially on a back-to-back," Nash said. "We had a tough game in Chicago. We didn't get in New Jersey until three in the morning. We had to find a way to win."

The Nets, who were missing Chris Douglas-Roberts due to back spasms, never got closer than five in the fourth quarter. A Nash 3-pointer with 5:02 left iced it at 107-95.

"They came out guns blazing (in the third quarter)," Harris said. "They got out in transition. They got some easy looks, but all night long they shot the three incredibly well. And with a team like that, they're going to shoot threes, but you've got to try and limit their looks as much as possible. And they shot a good percentage tonight and when they do that, they're tough to beat."

The game marked another chance for the Nets to see another potential coveted free agent in Stoudemire, who has been making up for Robin Lopez's absence and averaging 28.6 points, 10.3 rebounds and 61 percent shooting over his previous eight games. Stoudemire is slated to make $17.7 million next season, but could opt out of his contract to secure a longer-term deal now.

Before the game, Stoudemire spoke highly of the Nets to reporters.

"I think this franchise is definitely going to turn things around here soon," he said. "New ownership is coming in. They're looking to move to Brooklyn. All that is a factor."
