Thunder-Celtics Preview

Although the Boston Celtics are coming off one of their worst defeats of the season, they don't seem to be too concerned.

The Celtics look to bounce back and beat the Oklahoma City Thunder for a seventh straight time when they meet Wednesday night at TD Garden.

After losing three of four earlier this month, Boston (47-26) won six of seven to assuage fears its aging club was wearing down. Then, the Celtics were completely outplayed at home Sunday against San Antonio.

Boston shot 37.0 percent and missed 13 of 14 3-point attempts in a 94-73 loss. Paul Pierce scored 18 points and Kevin Garnett had 12 points and 10 rebounds, but couldn't prevent the Celtics from posting their lowest point total of the season.

Despite the subpar performance, Ray Allen still believes the team - which has already clinched a playoff berth and is tied for third in the Eastern Conference - in good shape to make a deep playoff run.

"This does not change our progress,'' said Allen, who scored seven points while shooting 2 of 9. "You trip up a little here, but it doesn't change the mission we're on or the direction we're heading.''

Boston hasn't had any trouble beating the Thunder lately.

The Celtics, who defeated the Thunder 105-87 on the road Dec. 4, have won six straight meetings in this series - outscoring the Oklahoma City franchise by an average of 17.0 points in that span - since a 101-95 loss in Seattle on Dec. 31, 2006. The Celtics have also won nine of the last 10 matchups between these clubs in Boston.

Seven Celtics scored in double figures in the December meeting, led by Garnett's 23 and Pierce's 21.

The Thunder (45-28) arrive in Boston following Tuesday's 111-93 win at Philadelphia to move closer to their first playoff appearance since 2005, when they were the SuperSonics. Oklahoma City, which has won three of four, is sixth in the Western Conference, two games back of fifth-place Denver and seven games ahead of ninth-place Memphis.

"Every game is critical for us," said Kevin Durant, the league's second-leading scorer (29.6) behind only LeBron James' 29.8 average. "We just want to go out there and play are hardest and leave it all out on the floor."

Durant, who had 36 points against the Celtics in December, led the Thunder on Tuesday with 26 points and 10 rebounds, while point guard Russell Westbrook had 10 points and 14 assists with only one turnover.

This will be Oklahoma City's last matchup with an Eastern Conference opponent before closing the regular season with eight straight contests against West rivals. The Thunder will follow this matchup with games against Dallas, Minnesota, Utah, Denver and Phoenix - all but the West-worst Timberwolves have already clinched a playoff berth.

"We start every game with the same approach, to have a serious competitive effort no matter who we're playing,'' Thunder coach Scott Brooks said.

Celtics frustrated after home loss to Durant, Thunder

BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- In a season that has seen the Boston Celtics suffer a number of embarrassing losses, Kevin Garnett has never appeared, and sounded, more upset than he did after losing a playoff-caliber contest, 109-104, to the Oklahoma City Thunder.

Garnett sat at the post-game podium, index finger digging into the table and head hung low, swaying side to side as he analyzed the box score. Surely, on that sheet, he saw that the Thunder had taken 34 free throws to Boston's 17, with 15 of those attempts coming from Kevin Durant (37 points).

"Obviously, we were playing Michael [expletive] Jordan tonight, the way he was getting the whistle," Garnett said. "Durant damn near shot more free throws than our whole team."

Though Celtics coach Doc Rivers said he wouldn't broach the subject, the officials were a clear talking point following the loss. The topic, however, was mostly an easy target for frustration after the Celtics lost one of their best-played games, shooting 59.5 percent with 30 assists on 44 made field goals.

"If you want a tape about how to score the basketball you gotta watch this game," Durant said. "It was a great game as far as offensive is concerned."

For much of the night, the Thunder were the ones drawing contact when they penetrated the lane. Durant certainly used some veteran moves to get himself to the line, but his aggressiveness was a far cry from that of Boston, which had players getting to, and then floating by, the rim. And whistles had little to do with Oklahoma City shooting 50.7 percent or scoring 128 points per 100 possessions.

"It was a battle of the offenses it seemed like," Boston's Paul Pierce said. "Whoever had the ball last was going to win, it was that type of game. Both teams really had a good rhythm on the offensive end and we were struggling to get stops and they were too."

Nor did calls have anything to do with back-to-back plays in the final two minutes. With the Thunder up by one, they ran Kevin Durant off screens on the right side of the paint, playing the decoy. As Durant drew the eyes of nearly every Boston defender, Jeff Green came from the baseline, slicing past a Nenad Krstic pick to pop out on the left wing for an open three.

The Thunder go up five. Ray Allen responds by driving in to the paint for a three-point play to get Boston within one at the 1:36 mark of the game. Then Oklahoma City ran the exact same play on the other end, with the exact same result: another Green triple that essentially sealed the game.

Garnett, the man chasing Green around those screens, was surprised by the shots.

"Up until those two threes I don't think he was even that much of a factor, to be honest," Garnett said. "We were helping off him and he hit two big threes."

As recently as last Friday, it had appeared as though the Celtics had turned the corner. But now they're on a two-game home losing streak. At least Sunday they knew they had been thoroughly beaten by the San Antonio Spurs. This one, Pierce said, was a tougher pill to swallow.

"It's a human game," Rivers said. "Sometime you're just going to play poorly. It's tougher for you when you know you were in the game and you had it, and you still lost it. That's a tough one. That doesn't happen very often; when we play well we usually win."

That's an equation that hasn't been holding true very often. Though the Celtics are still playing much better than they had been during entirely forgettable months of January and February, what's startling is that young teams -- like the Thunder and Portland Trail Blazers -- that were throttled in this building last season no longer have any fear. The intimidation factor is gone. Boston is just another beatable team.

"We've grown up," Durant said. "We've added a lot of different pieces since our first year, [when it was] me and Jeff. So it's good to come in here and beat a team like Boston -- a great team, a championship. It's all about moving on from here."
