Warriors-Jazz Preview

The Utah Jazz have moved into sole possession of first place in the Northwest Division, a standing that would guarantee them home-court advantage in the first round of the Western Conference playoffs.

Now they would like to stay there.

The Jazz can increase their lead with a win Wednesday night against the visiting Golden State Warriors, who are coming off their first road victory in nearly three months.

It remains to be seen where Utah (49-26) will finish amid the crowded cluster between second and fifth place in the West, but the outcome of Monday's games helped.

While the Jazz beat New York 103-98, Denver lost at Dallas, pushing Utah one game ahead of the Nuggets for its first outright division lead of the season. Denver and Portland finished tied atop the Northwest last season, denying the Jazz a third straight title.

"Now that we've got it, it's great, but we want to be in first come the end of the season,'' Utah forward Carlos Boozer said.

The Jazz have clinched a fourth consecutive playoff berth, no surprise considering they have gone 30-9 since Jan. 9 - the NBA's second-best record in that span behind Cleveland.

Boozer had 26 points and 14 rebounds against the Knicks for his 50th double-double, third most in the league. Point guard Deron Williams is seventh, notching his 41st with 23 points and 14 assists Monday.

Utah still needed to outscore New York 16-11 in the fourth quarter to earn its eighth straight home win.

"These teams are always dangerous. They're not playing for anything," Williams said. "They're loose. They're free. They have a lot of confidence and sometimes it's tough to go up against them."

The same could be said of the Warriors (21-52) as they play out the string. Golden State has won two of three, snapping a 13-game road skid with a 121-103 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Sunday.

The Warriors are hoping to push Don Nelson past Lenny Wilkens as the NBA's winningest coach. Nelson needs two victories to match Wilkens' total of 1,332.

Utah's Jerry Sloan ranks fourth on the list with 1,186 wins.

"It might not be important to Don, but it's important to us," forward Corey Maggette said. "We're just trying to play these games out as best we can and hopefully get the record for him. I know our guys are very conscious of it."

Nelson's fast-paced approach worked against the Clippers as Golden State shot 53.4 percent.

With leading scorer Monta Ellis out (flu), rookie guard Reggie Williams scored a game-high 25 points. Williams is averaging 14.9 points in 15 games since the Warriors signed him from the Sioux Falls Skyforce of the Development League.

"He's a special player - and here we got him out of the rock heap," Nelson said. "I think he has a gift, and he doesn't even know how big a gift he has."

Golden State's Stephen Curry ranks second among rookies with 16.5 points per game. He has averaged 21.7 in his last 23 contests.

The Jazz held Curry to 13 points in Utah's 100-89 win in Oakland on Feb. 19, one of three times this season Golden State failed to reach 90 points.

The Warriors, however, won their last visit to Utah 118-108 on April 11, snapping a six-game skid there and improving to 6-40 in Salt Lake City since the start of the 1986-87 season.

Jazz pad Northwest Division lead with easy win over Warriors

SALT LAKE CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Utah Jazz lead the Northwest Division and are looking to continue climbing the Western Conference standings.

The Golden State Warriors, although they've shown some fight in the last 10 days, are lottery-bound with little to play for other than trying to help coach Don Nelson set the NBA record for most coaching wins.

With the two teams in completely opposite situations during the season's final stretch, the result was fairly predictable.

Utah led by as many as 33 points and cruised to a 128-104 win over Golden State on Wednesday night. The Jazz (50-26), who have won eight of their last 10 games, increased their lead over Denver in the Northwest Division to 1.5 games with the victory. The Warriors (21-53) will miss the playoffs for the 16th time in 17 seasons.

Carlos Boozer had 25 points on 12-for-14 shooting and 13 rebounds, Paul Millsap added 19 points and 11 rebounds and Mehmet Okur contributed 18 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Jazz.

It was one of Utah's best games of the season, both individually and collectively. Deron Williams dished a season-high 19 assists even with sitting out the fourth quarter. Kyle Korver scored a season-high 21 points on 8-for-12 shooting. The Jazz scored 76 points in the first half, a season-high for points in a half.

A 16-4 run in the first quarter gave Utah a comfortable 35-19 lead. Boozer hit a jump hook to make it 27-16 and the Jazz led by double digits the rest of the way.

"They put the screws to us in the first quarter and just added to it," Nelson said. "That's what good teams are supposed to do."

The Jazz lost a key game to the Warriors late last season, and it cost them in the Western Conference race. They made sure it didn't happen again.

"I think our guys got off to a great start," Jazz coach Jerry Sloan said. "They came out and played hard, got themselves going. Their bodies were alive. I thought they did a good job defensively, and when they did that they got some easy baskets out of it."

The Jazz dominated pretty much all facets of their win over the Warriors, but perhaps what was most impressive was their ball movement and unselfish play. Utah recorded 37 assists on 46 made baskets.

"We did a great job of moving the ball, finding the open man," Boozer said. "We got the ball inside. We did a good job offensively."

Utah's ball movement was spectacular in the first half. The Jazz made six passes on one possession that culminated with Wesley Matthews making a 3-pointer and giving Utah a 52-32 lead. The Jazz made 14 shots in the first quarter and assisted on 13 of them.

"Our guys really pass the ball well," Sloan said. "That gives you a chance every time you're out there. "

The banged-up Warriors were especially overmatched in the paint against Utah. Golden State did little attacking offensively, settling mostly for outside shots. The Warriors missed their first nine 3-point attempts and were 4-for-26 from 3-point range. They scored just 26 points in the paint.

Utah destroyed Golden State on the boards, recording a 57-35 rebounding advantage.

"We came in (shorthanded) and didn't have any size and they just didn't give us a chance," Nelson said.

Golden State only dressed eight players and was without leading scorer Monta Ellis. He missed his second straight game because of the flu. The Jazz were without Andrei Kirilenko for the eighth time in 10 games because of a strained calf.

Sloan was pleased that his team didn't let up after building a 76-49 halftime lead. He played Boozer well into the fourth quarter to make sure the Warriors didn't rally. He experimented with some zone defense in the second half, and Utah kept Golden State's offense in check. The Jazz stretched their lead to 33 early in the fourth quarter.

"Sometimes we lay an egg in that department (playing well in the second half), especially with a lead like that," Sloan said. "I was glad to see us come back and finish the game up pretty strong."

Williams, who scored just eight points, earned his fourth quarter break by efficiently running Utah's offense and playing solid defense against Golden State rookie Stephen Curry. Curry finished with 15 points, but missed eight of his first 10 shots and picked up his fifth foul early in the third quarter.

"I couldn't throw it in the ocean tonight, so I decided to pass," Williams said. "We made a concentrated effort to play better defense. We're playing with a lot of confidence right now."

The Warriors have eight games left in the season to try and get Nelson the NBA record for coaching victories. He currently has 1,330 coaching wins, trailing all-time leader Lenny Wilkens by two victories.
