Trail Blazers-Hornets Preview

The Portland Trail Blazers have proven to be a tough team to match up with for at least one of their potential first-round playoff opponents. Now they just have to make sure they get into the postseason.

Coming off an impressive win, the Blazers can knock one of their Western Conference competitors out of playoff contention as they visit the New Orleans Hornets on Saturday night.

With 10 games remaining, Portland (43-29) appears intent on finishing the season strong, winning six of its last seven.

Portland beat Dallas 101-89 at home Thursday night, earning its third victory in the season series. The Blazers are jockeying for position in the West, and Dallas could be their first-round opponent.

"We've got to put it behind us and go on to New Orleans and try to get another one," guard Brandon Roy said.

The Blazers are five games ahead of ninth-place Memphis and can eliminate 11th-place New Orleans (34-39) from contention with a victory.

These teams have each won a road game in this season's series. This is the first meeting since the Blazers acquired Marcus Camby from the Los Angeles Clippers on Feb. 16.

Camby is coming off his best offensive game since then, posting 17 points and 11 rebounds.

"I think it's a matter of (Camby) getting used to how we want him to play that center position," coach Nate McMillan said.

The Blazers have won five straight and 10 of 12 when their starting lineup consists of Camby, Nicolas Batum, LaMarcus Aldridge, Roy and Andre Miller. It's the most games of any starting combination used by Portland this season.

Portland's bench has gotten stronger with the return of Rudy Fernandez, who missed a 93-87 loss at Phoenix on Sunday night due to a strained quadriceps. The second-year guard is shooting 53.8 percent (21 for 39) from 3-point range over his last eight games.

Chris Paul struggled in his second game back for the Hornets, finishing with five points and seven assists in 32 minutes of a 105-92 loss to Cleveland on Wednesday night. Paul returned Monday night after missing 24 games due to a left knee injury, scoring 11 points in 21 minutes as New Orleans beat Dallas 115-99.

"I have to get back into the flow and understand what we're trying to do," Paul said. "Hopefully, that will come sooner rather than later. ... The biggest thing is that my knee feels fine."

Paul was held to three points on 1-of-8 shooting in an 86-78 loss to the Blazers on Nov. 13.

Rookie Darren Collison, who was impressive as a starter for Paul, continues to play well despite returning to a reserve role. He's averaging 16.5 points and 7.5 assists in his last two games.

Red-hot Blazers eliminate Hornets from playoff contention

NEW ORLEANS (NBA.com exclusive) -- You can scratch off the New Orleans Hornets from the list of teams vying to catch the Portland Trail Blazers for the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

And the Blazers can take extra satisfaction as they had a personal hand in ensuring the Hornets will be home for the postseason as Portland pummeled New Orleans 112-101 on Saturday night.

The loss mathematically eliminated the Hornets from playoffs, while the win gave Portland a 5 1/2-game lead over Memphis for the final playoff spot. Portland is easily one of the hottest teams in the NBA as it's now won 10 of its last 12 games.

It may have been a combination of hot shooting from Portland and poor defense from New Orleans, but any way you look at it, the moral of the story was that the Blazers dominated the Hornets on offense.

Portland was shooting 66.7 percent from the field with about 3:30 left in the third quarter. The Blazers went on a span through the second and third quarters where they shot 18-of-20 from the floor.

Even though the Blazers ended the game only shooting 57.3 percent, Portland's starting five of Brandon Roy, LaMarcus Aldridge, Andre Miller, Marcus Camby and Nicolas Batum shot lights out as they combined to drain 76.6 percent of their shots going 36-for-47.

"It's nice to see the ball go in," Blazers coach Nate McMillan said. "We've got guys who can knock down shots. We want to establish the inside. I thought we did that ? LaMarcus, Brandon and Andre. I thought we played from the inside out. We knocked down our shots. When our shots are falling, we get aggressive defensively."

Roy started hot and never looked back as he scored a game-high 28 points only missing on two of his 14 shots.

"Coming in I didn't feel over aggressive," Roy said. "I just tried to make plays. I know early on they put (Marcus) Thornton on me. I just tried to get something going more towards the basket. My midrange was falling so I think any time that's going it's going to be tough to defend.

"They were trying to push me in the middle. I just tried to take what they gave me. ... I felt good. From that first shot he hit my elbow but it felt good. I was pump-faking and jabbing and when that midrange is kind of going for me I'm in a really good groove. Making shots early helps because it gives you confidence."

Aldridge saw little resistance from the Hornets' David West as the Blazers' forward scored 24 points. Batum chipped in with 13 points, while Camby added 11 points and 14 rebounds.

"We were pretty efficient tonight," Roy said. "I thought L.A. (Aldridge) did a pretty good job in the post. Cam (Camby) did a good job of getting rebounds and putbacks and you know, 'Dre, he's a tough cover because you've got to double team him when you put those small guys on him. So we did a good job making shots and that's how you've got to play sometimes to win games on the road."

McMillan and Roy took satisfaction in personally knocking the Hornets out of the playoff hunt, but both said they're looking more toward catching San Antonio and Oklahoma City, who Portland plays Sunday night on the road.

"We knew this is a team along with Houston and Memphis that's trying to chase us," Roy said. "We're the eighth-place team, so it's always good to get those teams behind us. We don't want them to make any ground."

The Hornets didn't struggle at all from the field either, though, ending with a better shooting percentage than the Blazers at 58.6 percent. Rookie Darren Collison led the charge going 10-for-10 from the floor with 22 points off the bench.

It's little consolation for a team that now has to look to next season as the postseason aspirations have disappeared.

"I think because from being a ballplayer, we've kind of known where we stood for the past two weeks just knowing the uphill fight we had," West said, who scored 18 points. "So I just think that when it comes down to it, you just got to be honest to yourself, be honest about the
