BOSTON (NBA.com exclusive) -- The Boston Celtics nearly blew another second-half lead, but this time it felt different.
For one, they still picked up the victory, 94-86, despite letting a 24-point advantage over the Tyreke Evans-less Sacramento Kings dwindle to six. But also, it was partially a result of Celtics coach Doc Rivers pulling the starters with a minute to go in the third and, with both Nate Robinson and Kendrick Perkins out with injuries, inserting combinations of bench players that didn't have a full game's worth of minutes together all season.
With a 13-point lead to open the fourth quarter -- and momentum already slightly in Sacramento's favor -- the Kings hit three tough jumpers to get to 12. Then Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo came back in and the lead dropped to eight. Even as Rasheed Wallace and Kevin Garnett returned, Beno Udrih hit a three to get within seven before the starters found their groove and played keep away for the final four minutes.
"We stopped playing," Rivers said. "I wasn't real happy with it. It was really difficult for me to put the starters back in. It looked like it was the benches fault, and it really was not. But we won the game."
And Sacramento is headed home with a lump of fool's gold.
The game mattered, in the sense that Boston used it to clinch the Atlantic Division -- a feat Kevin Garnett said nobody even mentioned afterwards in the locker room -- but it was also overshadowed by the individual accomplishments of Rajon Rondo. As an appetizer, Rondo set a new career-high with 18 assists, but far beyond that, with three steals, Rondo became the All-Time Celtics franchise leader in steals with 170, passing Rick Fox for the record.
"It may mean more to me when I retire or I am away from here," Rondo said. "I am just focused on winning. It is a great accomplishment. This organization has won so many championships and has had some great players come through."
Not too shabby for a player widely reported to have been shopped around by General Manager Danny Ainge last summer. While the record itself is just something to look up online in a couple decades and tell people about when speaking of Rondo, for this season it's a remarkable mark of his growth.
"[Records] come in the path of doing great things for the team," Rondo said.
The player that came into the league four years ago playing possum and cheating into the passing lanes for quick steals has slowly morphed into a complete defender.
"Records don't just fall in your lap," Garnett said. "The anticipation [for a steal] is a gamble at times, but you know we understand Rondo's game. We know that nine out of ten times he is solid. Eight out of ten times he is right. The two we have to make up for, but at the same time when we mess up, he is there to help us.
"He's just growing up in front of us."
But not too fast. Rondo said, with a laugh, that the bench players still joked that he leads the team both in steals and gambles as the record was announced over the PA system.
On the Kings' end, they were without their best player in Evans and didn't have much of a chance, on paper, to win. But they fought back, despite never appearing -- through body and facial language -- to actually believe they would complete the comeback.
"The second half we really got it going," Kings coach Paul Westphal said. "We played the way we think we're supposed to play and we made it interesting."
For Boston, interesting is just fine. Things can be interesting and you can still win. Things can interesting and you can still grab an innocuous division title.
"So I guess that's good," Rivers said. "It's obviously not what we're trying to do. When you have a team with your goals so high, you don't really focus on it."
