The Dallas Mavericks have hit a rough patch since going almost a month without a loss. A visit from the Los Angeles Clippers could help them get back on track.

Looking to avoid a third consecutive defeat, the Mavericks try to bounce back with a seventh straight home win over the Clippers on Tuesday night.

Dallas (46-24) won 13 straight games from Feb. 17-March 10, and appeared ready to challenge the Los Angeles Lakers for the top spot in the Western Conference. However, after a 115-99 loss at New Orleans on Monday, the Mavericks have dropped two in a row and three four since that winning stretch.

Now third in the West and six games behind the first-place Lakers - Dallas hasn't lost three straight games since Jan. 28-Feb. 1.

"I think the big thing is we're being inconsistent," Mavericks guard Jason Kidd said. "Maybe a little bit too relaxed. It's something we have to look at."

The Mavericks have a chance to turn things around against the Clippers (26-44), who've lost four in a row and 10 of 11 between the teams. Losers of 10 straight on the road overall, Los Angeles hasn't won in Dallas since April 19, 2006.

Still, Dallas likely needs to play a more complete game than it did against the Hornets to get back to its winning ways.

Jason Terry scored 24 points and Dirk Nowitzki added 16 for the Mavericks, who shot 51.9 percent but blew an early 16-point lead and committed 18 turnovers, which New Orleans converted into 35 points.

After holding its opponents to 97.1 points per game on 45.0 percent shooting during the extended winning streak, Dallas is giving up an average of 112.8 points on 53.8 percent shooting over the last four.

"It's disappointing, (the players) clearly have a focus problem that we must look at and fix before the postseason," Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "And we have the ability to do it. We have a quick turnaround and everyone has to bounce back We are going to have to do a lot better than we did (Monday)."

The Mavericks haven't had much trouble stopping the Clippers at home in recent years. Los Angeles has averaged 91.3 points during its last six trips to Dallas.

Nowitzki's averaged 30.0 points in his last four games against the Clippers. He had 24 with nine rebounds in Dallas' 93-84 win at Los Angeles on Oct. 31.

Chris Kaman had 27 points and 11 rebounds in that contest for the Clippers, but the veteran center was held to 12 points in a 102-89 home loss to Sacramento on Sunday.

After snapping an eight-game losing skid with a 101-93 win over Milwaukee on Wednesday, the Clippers allowed the Kings to shoot 50 percent while being held to fewer than 90 points for fifth time in nine contests.

"There is no explanation for our performance. It was just a lack of effort,'' said guard Baron Davis, who had 13 points but two assists. "On a given night, not everyone is going to have it offensively. But I think there are other things that can be done on the court.''

Second-year guard Eric Gordon had 23 points Sunday, and 32 in Los Angeles' 107-102 loss in its last trip to Dallas on Jan. 6, 2009.

Kidd celebrates 37th birthday with win over Clips

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- After Dirk Nowitzki got kicked out of the party and the Clippers threatened to steal his cake and gifts, Jason Kidd took over in the fourth quarter and carried the Mavericks to a 106-96 victory on his 37th birthday Tuesday.

The 16-year veteran scored 13 of his season-high 26 points during a decisive 22-3 run to start the fourth quarter. Kidd sank a season-high six 3-pointers and delivered 12 assists for his 24th double-double.

"It was a nice birthday gift and a good birthday and I'm glad we got the win," Kidd said.

Fueled by a career night from former Maverick Drew Gooden, Los Angeles nearly crashed Kidd's party. The Mavericks cruised to a 16-point lead in the first half, but lost their composure after Nowitzki earned an ejection with two quick technicals after arguing a foul call at the 9:16 mark of the third quarter. The Clippers promptly put together a 15-4 run after Nowitzki's dismissal, his first since Dec. 26, 2008 at Utah.

"That was a bad decision by Dirk," Mavericks head coach Rick Carlisle said. "It put the team in a terrible situation and he knows it was wrong. If you get a technical, you get one and make your point and you've got to let it go. He is too important to us."

Dallas shot 26 percent (6-for-23) and managed only 14 points in the third quarter. Gooden scored 14 by himself during the period and finished with 26 points and 20 rebounds, his first career 20/20 game.

Los Angeles opened the fourth quarter with a 77-76 advantage, but Kidd ignited the comeback with a perfect alley-oop pass to rookie Roddy Beaubois. The Mavericks made nine of their first 11 shots in the period, including Kidd's 3-for-3 effort from behind the arc, and capped the 22-3 spurt with a layup from the birthday boy to make it 98-80 with 6:40 remaining.

"He willed the team with his energy and his enthusiasm," Carlisle said. "He got guys engaged and it wasn't just playmaking, it was shot making, it was assists, it was defensive plays, it was giving guys confidence out there. I can't say enough great things about Jason Kidd."

The Clippers missed nine of their first 10 shots in the fourth. Their only made field goal in the first six-plus minutes was a banked 3-pointer by Baron Davis. They shot 23 percent (5-for-22) and were outscored 10-0 in fastbreak points during the quarter.

"They went to a small man zone and we fell into the trap," Clippers coach Kim Hughes said. "We started launching quick outside shots. We didn't attempt to try to go inside, and it proved to be our demise. When they made a run making 3s, we got caught up in the euphoria of that and tried to shoot 3s of our own and it just cascaded from there."

Dallas halted a two-game slide and handed Los Angeles its 10th loss in 11 games. The Clippers have lost their last seven trips to Dallas and have dropped 11 consecutive road games this season. They also fell to 3-36 when giving up 100 or more points.

Nowitzki finished with 18 points, Jason Terry scored 14 and Shawn Marion added 12 for the Mavericks. Brendan Haywood had 12 points, 10 rebounds and four blocked shots in 30 minutes off the bench and Beaubois scored all 10 of his points in the fourth quarter.

Gooden had his best game since joining the Clippers. He averaged 8.9 points and 6.9 rebounds in 46 games for Dallas before being traded to the Wizards with Josh Howard last month for Haywood, Caron Butler and DeShawn Stevenson. He was dealt to L.A. a few days later and has settled in nicely as the full-time starter. On this night, he outscored and outrebounded Haywood, Butler and Stevenson, who had a combined 16 points and 17 boards.

"I still feel like they are family," Gooden said after his first game in Dallas since the trade. "But I wanted to compete tonight and just be a professional and compete against my old team."

All five Clippers starters scored in double figures, but the bench was outscored 43-5. Chris Kaman tallied 22 points and nine rebounds, Rasual Butler and Eric Gordon each scored 16 and Davis had a double-double with 11 points and 13 assists.

"I was disappointed that our bench didn't help us," Hughes said. "I think if our bench would have performed, we would have won."
