Celtics-Mavericks Preview

Neither the Dallas Mavericks nor the Boston Celtics will enter the playoffs as championship favorites, but both veteran-laden division leaders are trying to prove they can still make deep postseason runs.

While the Celtics look for a fourth consecutive win as they continue their road trip Saturday night in Dallas, the Mavericks will be trying to close their homestand with a 15th victory in 16 games.

Dallas (46-22) may be the more likely club to make noise this spring based on its impressive recent play. The Mavs saw their 13-game winning streak end in a shocking 128-94 home loss to the New York Knicks last Saturday, but they bounced back Wednesday by beating Chicago 113-106.

Newcomer Caron Butler scored a team-high 27 points to help build a big lead, although Dallas squandered much of an 18-point fourth-quarter advantage before finishing off the Bulls.

"We've got to get better at closing out games," reserve guard Jose Juan Barea said. "But as long as we keep getting those leads and as long as we keep getting Ws, it's all fine."

Dallas has a 4 1/2-game cushion on San Antonio in the Southwest Division, and trails Denver by one-half game for second place in the Western Conference.

It should help the Mavs having Jason Terry back in the lineup after the high-scoring reserve missed five games following facial surgery. Terry wore a clear plastic mask Wednesday and was held to nine points - about eight below his season average - in 25 minutes.

"He's a factor on the floor because of all the attention he draws," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "He changes the geometry of the rest of the players. Even when he's not scoring, he's a factor."

The win over the Bulls was Dallas' only game in the last six days, but the club's schedule will get significantly busier down the stretch. Starting Saturday, the Mavs play three games in four nights and eight in the next 13 days.

"From here on out ... the games just keep coming till the rest of the season and it should be fun," said star forward Dirk Nowitzki, who had 37 points in a 99-90 win at Boston on Jan. 18, snapping Dallas' four-game losing streak in this series.

It was the Mavericks' first victory over the Celtics since Boston acquired Kevin Garnett and Ray Allen in 2007.

Garnett was injured for the Jan. 18 loss - one of 10 games he had to sit out during the Celtics' 13-16 stretch between Christmas Day and the end of February, as the durability of Boston's aging core came into question.

The Celtics (44-24) have recovered to go 8-3 in March, reestablishing a double-digit lead in the Atlantic Division and pulling into a third-place tie with Atlanta in the East. Perhaps their most impressive win this month was Friday night's 94-87 victory at Houston.

Paul Pierce had 26 points, following up a 29-point effort in Wednesday's win over the Knicks, as Boston held the Rockets to 39.5 percent shooting.

The Celtics are 12-0 when their opponents shoot under 40 percent, but they're not achieving the feat as often as they used to; over the previous two seasons, they were a combined 46-4 when that happened. Allen blamed Boston's defensive problems on the team's performance at the other end.

"Executing offensively, that's been our Achilles' heel, when we've been bad," Allen said. "With bad offense, you put teams in transition, and we don't give our defense a chance."

The Celtics still have the NBA's second-best road record at 23-12, trailing only Cleveland's 25-11 mark.

"The road is hostile," Garnett said. "You expect the worst, and that's what it is. Maybe we're too confident at home."

Pierce, Rondo lead Mavs to come-from-behind win in Dallas

DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- On a strange Texas evening where there were springtime snowflakes outside, Paul Pierce and Rajon Rondo scored a flurry of second-half points to lead the Celtics to a 102-93 victory Saturday against the Mavericks.

Pierce scored 17 of his 29 points after intermission and Boston shot a scorching 68.8 percent (22-for-32) over the final two quarters to cool off Dallas, winner of 14 of its previous 15 games. It was the fourth straight win for the Celtics and their 24th road victory of the season, second only to Cleveland with 25.

After the Mavericks cut Boston's lead to 94-93 with 2:03 remaining, Pierce took over. He drained a 3-pointer at the 1:44 mark, then stole an errant pass from Dirk Nowitzki and dished to Rondo for a fastbreak layup with 1:21 remaining. Just like that, it was 99-93 and Dallas was done.

"He's starting to get his confidence," Celtics coach Doc Rivers said of Pierce. "I got on him in a timeout because I thought he was looking to pass too much, which I don't think I've ever had to say that to Paul, and told him to just be aggressive, just be who you are, and he was that."

Pierce's wasn't the only hot hand for the Celtics in the second half. Rondo scored 10 of his 20 points in the fourth quarter and Ray Allen scored 13 of his 21 points in the half. Over the final two periods, Pierce was 6-for-7, Rondo was 6-for-8 and Allen was 4-for-6 (3-for-5 from 3-point range). Rondo added 10 rebounds and five assists and Kevin Garnett contributed nine rebounds and five steals.

The Celtics improved to 25-6 when shooting at least 50 percent, connecting at a 52-percent clip in an occasionally sloppy game where the two division leaders combined for 36 turnovers.

It was yet another slow start for the Mavericks, who trailed 30-24 after the first quarter and 48-47 at the break. Dallas has trailed at halftime in 37 of its 69 games this season, including nine times in 17 games since the All-Star break. Its record is 18-19 in those contests.

"We were playing from behind for most of the night," Mavericks coach Rick Carlisle said. "That made it tough. You've got to be able to get some stops. We didn't get stops. That was our undoing."

Nowitzki came to life after intermission, scoring 12 in the fourth quarter and 20 of his 28 in the second half. Shawn Marion scored 10 of the Mavericks' first 14 points in the game and finished with 16. Sixth man Jason Terry, in his second game back following surgery to repair a fractured orbital bone, outscored the entire Boston bench 18-13. Jason Kidd added 11 points, nine assists and six boards.

The Mavericks seized their biggest lead at 82-75 when J.J. Barea punctuated a 10-0 run with a 3-pointer with 8:34 to play.

The Celtics made 11 of their next 13 shots, a momentum-swinging stretch that included a 5-for-5 effort by Rondo.

"Rondo was really key down the stretch," Mavericks center Brendan Haywood said. "He made a lot of plays for their team. I think they really fed off his energy. We didn't get the stops. We didn't quite do enough to close this game out."

It was a tough loss to begin a tough stretch of the schedule for the Mavericks, who played the first of three games in four nights and eight games in 13 days. Thanks to Milwaukee's win against Denver on Saturday night, the Mavs remain just a half-game behind the Nuggets for the No. 2 seed in the West. Dallas returns to action Monday at New Orleans. Nowitzki needs just three points to pass David Robinson (20,790) for 29th place on the all-time scoring list.
