Even though the results were different, the Atlanta Hawks have played well the last two games without their leading scorer.

After falling on a late shot in their last contest and with Joe Johnson being a game-time decision, Atlanta hopes for a more favorable outcome against the Charlotte Bobcats on Friday night.

The Hawks (43-24), who are tied with Boston for third in the Eastern Conference, return home after splitting a pair of games without Johnson (Achilles' tendinitis). After defeating league-worst New Jersey by 24 points Tuesday, Atlanta appeared on its way to its fourth straight win Wednesday against Toronto before Chris Bosh hit a shot with 2.1 seconds remaining to lead the Raptors to a 106-105 victory.

After leading by 12 at one point, the Hawks were outscored 31-19 in the fourth quarter. Jamal Crawford, who scored a season-high 33, was held to four over the final 12 minutes.

"I thought we played pretty steady throughout the ball game," coach Mike Woodson said. "But coming down the stretch we just unraveled and didn't make the plays that we needed to make."

Despite the loss, it was another outstanding game by Crawford, who tallied 25 in the win over the Nets and shot 56.0 percent versus Toronto. For the season, Crawford is averaging 17.9 points, but scoring 22.1 points per game this month.

Crawford may need to step up again Friday. Johnson, who averages 21.5 points, is day-to-day, but he wasn't listed in the team's starting lineup on the Hawks' official Web site.

Crawford scored 24 in a 103-89 home win over the Bobcats (35-32) on Jan. 22 in the most recent meeting between the teams. Atlanta has won five straight at Phillips Arena over Charlotte including a 103-83 victory Nov. 6.

The loss in January to Atlanta began a 7-12 stretch for the Bobcats. After losing by 24 at Boston on March 3, however, they have won seven of eight, including 100-92 over Oklahoma City on Wednesday.

Stephen Jackson scored 18 of his 20 points in the second half to help Charlotte rally from a 19-point first-half deficit. Stephen Graham matched a career high with 19 points while filling in for the injured Gerald Wallace (ankle).

The come-from-behind win came hours after Michael Jordan was approved as the first former player to be a majority owner of an NBA team.

"I say this all the time, that there's a different energy when he's around, in the building, in the locker room, among the players," coach Larry Brown said.

Brown's team continues to play at its best against playoff contenders. Among the other teams it has beaten during the last eight games are the Lakers, Miami and Orlando.

Charlotte may be joining those teams in the playoffs for the first time in franchise history. The Bobcats are in sixth place in the East, 4 1/2 games ahead of ninth-place Chicago.

"We're playing like we want to be a playoff team," Jackson told the Bobcats' official Web site.

Johnson comes up clutch as Hawks down Bobcats

ATLANTA (NBA.com exclusive) -- Friday night's game of cold and hot in Philips Arena came down to who had the ball in his hands last, and that was Joe Johnson. So, Hawks win.

His buzzer-beating 21-foot jump shot finished off Atlanta's 93-92 overtime win over the Bobcats, who thanks largely to Gerald Wallace's 16-point third quarter nearly won for the seventh time in eight games.

Johnson missed all nine of his shots through the first three quarters in his first game after missing two straight with tendinitis in his Achilles' tendon. But he ramped up for nine in the fourth as Atlanta overcame a 10-point deficit, and added seven in overtime to finish with 18.

Wallace, in his third game back after missing three straight with a left ankle and foot sprain, missed his three shots in the first half before making 5-for-6 in the third, including a 3-pointer, and 5-for-6 from the free-throw line. Wallace finished with 20 points and 16 rebounds.

"I've been off for five days, and ... it took a while for me to try to get into the game, and get in the rhythm," said Johnson, who was not listed as a likely starter before the game. "In the fourth quarter, I pretty much just tried to force it, make plays whether it was offense or defense."

Beyond the on-and-off duel of superstars, Friday's game was tight most of the way, kind of like the style of basketball both teams expect to be playing a month from now -- in the playoffs.

These teams could very well meet beyond their April 6 matchup in Charlotte. Atlanta (44-24) and Boston are tied for third in the East. If they finish the regular season tied, Boston would be the No. 3 seed by virtue of winning the Atlantic division regardless of the Hawks' 4-0 sweep of the Celtics.

And the Bobcats, who lost for just the second time in nine games, are sitting at No. 6, primed to face the No. 3 team in the East in the first round. "It was a playoff atmosphere," said Atlanta coach Mike Woodson. "Two teams playing for something, two teams defending and rebounding, bodies flying all over the court."

The Bobcats rode Wallace to an 69-64 lead after three quarters, and pushed the spread to 76-66 early in the fourth when Boris Diaw hit an 18-footer with 8:58 left in regulation.

But after Stephen Jackson's 20-foot jump shot with 2:18 left in the fourth gave Charlotte (35-33) an 84-79 lead, the visitors didn't score again until overtime.

The key came with 49 seconds left, after Josh Smith fouled Jackson. A 78 percent free-throw shooter who had hit 24 of his previous 27, Jackson missed both to leave Charlotte's lead at 84-82.

"The turning point in the game is when I missed the two free throws," said Jackson, the former Hawk who finished with 19. "I had a chance to ice the game and put it away. And I blew it. I owe my team one."

After Johnson's running 7-footer with 35 seconds left in regulation tied the score, Charlotte's Theo Ratliff missed a wide-open 17-foot baseline jumper with 23 seconds left to bring about overtime.

Should these teams meet in the playoffs, the Hawks will need to find a way to keep Charlotte point guard Raymond Felton out of the paint. He scored consecutive layups, including an acrobatic drive down the lane where he avoided menacing shot blocker Josh Smith to pop in a left-handed scoop with 3.8 seconds left in overtime for a 92-91 lead. That was the last of his game-high 25 points.

After a timeout, Mike Bibby inbounded to Johnson high on the left side, and he dribbled hard -- with Jackson defending -- toward the left side of the lane. As Felton slid over to help, Smith stopped, elevated and shot.

It was good defense, the kind the Bobcats play pretty regularly, the kind that has helped them sweep the Cavs and split with the Lakers -- and nearly win in Los Angeles.

"They play hard for 48 minutes. They don't back down," Johnson said. "Give 'em a lot of credit; Larry Brown has those guys rolling."

The last guy with the ball, though, won. The shot hit nothing but net and then hardwood.

"Joe Johnson made a great shot," Brown said.

"I knew we had 3.8 seconds on the clock so I knew I could take a few dribbles and try to get to a sweet spot and get a good look," Johnson said. "It felt great when it left my hand."
