Thunder-Bobcats Preview

With the Oklahoma City Thunder closing in on the franchise's first playoff berth since 2005, the emerging Western Conference contender may have to readjust its goals down the stretch.

Simply qualifying for the postseason would be good enough for the Charlotte Bobcats.

Charlotte, however, will have a difficult task as it tries to bounce back from its first loss in two weeks Wednesday night against the visiting Thunder, who've won five in a row and 17 of 20 and can secure a winning season with another victory.

After going 43-121 over their previous two seasons, the Thunder (41-24) have solidified their status as the NBA's most improved club during their recent run, which continued with Sunday's 119-111 victory over Utah.

The Jazz remain in fourth place in the conference, but Oklahoma City pulled even with Utah in the loss column and could realistically earn home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs, which would be a major surprise in the deep, competitive West.

"I think if we continue to keep playing and keep playing the way we are, we're going to keep moving up," said point guard Russell Westbrook, who had 30 points and 11 assists against the Jazz.

While Westbrook has three 30-point performances in his last 13 games, averaging 19.8 points and 9.8 assists in that stretch, Kevin Durant continues to be the driving force behind Oklahoma City's renaissance.

Durant had 35 points Sunday, shooting 10 of 17 from the field to spark one of the Thunder's most efficient offensive efforts. Oklahoma City shot 60.3 percent, topping 60.0 for the first time since Jan. 21, 2002, when the franchise was in Seattle and the SuperSonics beat Philadelphia 109-98.

"When guys make shots and we get stops, that gives us a lot of momentum and that gives us kind of like some more energy," Durant said. "Guys were coming out there and when they got the opportunity to get the ball, they were making shots.

"We were putting each other in good positions to score, and when you do that, that's what equals out to good shots."

Durant, whose 29.8 points per game trail only Cleveland's LeBron James, scored 30 in a 98-91 home win over Charlotte on Dec. 26, but the Bobcats have been much better at home. They've won four straight at Time Warner Cable Arena to improve to 24-8 there.

Charlotte (34-32) had a chance to set a franchise record with a seventh straight win overall on Tuesday night, but it lost 99-94 at Indiana as top rebounder and second-leading scorer Gerald Wallace missed his second consecutive game with an ankle injury.

The Bobcats won 96-89 at reigning East champion Orlando without Wallace on Sunday, but slipped up against the Pacers, who had lost 13 of their previous 16.

"It's still a young team that's growing," Charlotte's Stephen Jackson said of the Bobcats. "We tend to get away from understanding what's important and what's at stake."

The team remains in sixth place in the East, percentage points ahead of Miami and three games ahead of ninth-place Chicago, which has lost eight straight.

Although Charlotte will be playing its sixth game in nine days on Wednesday, Jackson refused to blame fatigue for the Bobcats' latest result.

With Wallace out, Charlotte has had one pair of fresh legs with little-used Stephen Graham in the starting lineup the last two games. Graham had a career-high 19 points and matched a career best with eight rebounds against Indiana, shooting 8 of 10 from the field.

Graham steps into lineup, helps Bobcats shut down Thunder

CHARLOTTE (NBA.com exclusive) -- Michael Jordan got to experience the highs and lows of owning an NBA team in his first day as majority owner.

Jordan, who was formally approved as majority owner of the Charlotte Bobcats on Wednesday afternoon, saw his new team trail by as many 19 points in the first half before rallying to pick up a 100-92 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder on Wednesday at Time Warner Cable Arena.

"Purchasing the Bobcats is the culmination of my post-playing career goal of becoming the majority owner of an NBA franchise," Jordan said. "I am especially pleased to have the opportunity to build a winning team in my home state of North Carolina. I plan to make this franchise an organization that Charlotte can be proud of, and I am committed to doing all that I can to achieve this goal."

Stephen Jackson led the way for the Bobcats with 18 of his 20 points in the second half while Stephen Graham chipped in 17 of his 19. Charlotte was once again stingy on the defensive end in the second half allowing the Thunder just 41 points on 17-for-41 shooting.

"We're playing like we want to be a playoff team," Jackson said. "To let that one get away last night and then bounce back against a good team like Oklahoma City tonight says a lot about this team."

With Jordan sitting next to the Bobcats bench, Kevin Durant and company led 51-32 late in the second quarter. Raymond Felton then capped an 11-0 outburst with a 3-pointer to close the quarter and leave Charlotte within striking distance.

"Coach lit a spark underneath us at halftime," Graham said. "He said there was no way we would win unless we could play with some passion and energy. We took what he said and really locked up out there defensively."

The Bobcats came out on fire in the second half as well. Graham's layup knotted the game at 61 midway through the third quarter. Charlotte tied the score again at 63 and 65 and then took the lead for good with 2:07 to play in the third on another basket from Graham.

"Stephen Graham has been great," said Charlotte point guard Raymond Felton. "My hat is off to him. Without Stephen Graham in there tonight, we wouldn't have won -- no question."

Gerald Wallace was again absent from the Bobcats lineup with a left ankle and mid-foot sprain. However, Graham again filled in nicely in the starting lineup with 19 points and five rebounds. Graham has averaged 16.7 points in his three games as a starter.

"I saw it as a chance and an opportunity," Graham said. "We're trying to make this playoff run and someone had to pick up where Gerald (Wallace) left off. I think it was a good opportunity for me to come in here and show what I can do."

The Thunder came in as one of the hottest teams in the league having won 17 of their last 20, but Durant's game-high 26 points proved to not be enough.

"(The atmosphere) was fun," Durant said. "It's been like that in our building too for a couple of weeks now. We're trying to fight to get into the playoffs as well, it's going to be fun for these last 16 or 17 games."

Oklahoma City's Jeff Green left the game with 9:19 to play after colliding with Stephen Jackson. Green had 17 points at the time of his injury and returned to the lineup, but was ineffective for Oklahoma City.

"We battled a good team on their home floor," Oklahoma City's coach Scott Brooks said. "This is a playoff team, and they have one of the best home records in the league."
