Timberwolves-Kings Preview

Although they're one of the worst teams in the league, some believe the Sacramento Kings can be competitive in a few seasons as rookie guard Tyreke Evans continues to develop.

The Minnesota Timberwolves are also in the midst of an awful season, but their future appears to be far more unclear as they seem to be a team in disarray.

A pair of disappointing clubs that appear to be heading in different directions square off when the Kings host the Timberwolves on Sunday night.

It's been a rough first season in Sacramento for coach Paul Westphal, as his Kings (22-44) have already been eliminated from playoff contention with the Western Conference's third-worst record. Sacramento, though, has been encouraged by the play of Evans.

The No. 4 overall pick from Memphis has emerged as a top contender for Rookie of the Year, leading all first-year players with 20.1 points per game while averaging 5.5 assists, 5.0 rebounds and 1.5 steals.

Evans recorded his first triple-double in a 113-90 win over Toronto on Wednesday and had 10 points and 10 rebounds in Friday's 110-94 loss to Portland. The Trail Blazers didn't make it easy on Evans, keeping constant pressure on him defensively.

"Square your shoulders and try to shadow him in transition because he is really good going coast-to-coast," Portland coach Nate McMillan said of guarding Evans.

While the Kings have a legitimate scoring threat that demands the attention of opposing defenses, the conference-worst Timberwolves (14-52) have no such leader.

After falling 110-102 to Denver on Wednesday, the team's two best players - Al Jefferson and Kevin Love - questioned coach Kurt Rambis' defensive game plan. Love, who sat out Friday's 103-85 loss to San Antonio with a sprained left foot, also said he was still confused about his role in the offense.

Rambis said he recognized the losses - eight in a row and 14 in the last 15 games - are starting to take their toll.

"They need a win is what they need," Rambis said. "Guys establish winning attitudes and losing attitudes and right now, our guys feel when things go bad, it's here we go again."

Defensive letdowns have been a big problem for Minnesota, which has allowed an average of 111.6 points in the last seven games and is 3-35 when giving up at least 104.

Things haven't been any better on offense, as Jefferson, who averages a team-best 17.3 points, has been limited to 13 or fewer in six of the last nine games.

The Timberwolves have lost 15 of 17 away from Minnesota and play six of their next seven on the road. They've been outscored by an average of 15.7 points in losing three straight in Sacramento, falling 120-100 on Dec. 12.

Evans just misses triple-double as Kings rout Timberwolves

SACRAMENTO (NBA.com exclusive) -- It might be time to start the engraving process on this season's Rookie Of The Year award.

Tyreke Evans nearly earned his second career triple-double in a week, as the 20-year-old finished with 29 points, 11 assists and nine rebounds in a 114-110 Kings' victory against the Timberwolves in Sacramento.

The rookie, always fluid through traffic in the lane, sidestepped, spun and accelerated himself through the Minnesota defense throughout Sunday night. Oh, and he was hitting his jumper.

Evans was taken out of the game with six minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, just one rebound shy of his second career triple-double. His first triple-double came just days earlier on March 10 at home versus Toronto.

Evans said he thought his coach, Paul Westphal, was going to take him out of the game earlier.

"He let me stay in longer than I should have," Evans said. "I definitely was looking for (one more rebound) in the game. ...I was attacking the boards trying to get a triple-double."

Evans' story checks out -- mostly.

"He wasn't begging to go back in the game," Kings coach Paul Westphal said. "We don't play to pad stats. He doesn't need it. We play to win the game and he understands that."

Evans seemed to be playing a game within the game. In the first half he went for points, earning 24 of his 29 total points. In the second half, he recorded nine of his 11 assists.

So, which did the guard say he enjoyed more?

"Both," said Evans. "When you're getting assists and points you can't be mad. For me it's just to go out there and share the ball when I see an open man.

"I might miss the open man when I have a layup but my teammates know there are no hard feelings. I try to make the pass when I can and that's what they like about me."

There's little to knock about Evans' game as a rookie, but if there have been any whispers they have surrounded his inability to find open teammates.

The guard displayed his unselfishness in the third quarter when he found himself out in front of a three-on-none fast break, slowed down and lobbed the ball up for teammate Donte Greene, who finished with a dramatic one-handed flush.

"Donte always complains about my alley-oops so I wanted to prove to him (I could do it)," Evans said.

Being able to add a consistent jump shot to his game would make the top Rookie Of The Year candidate even tougher to contain.

"I am going to work hard it on this summer and try and come back with that in my game," Evan said. "Once I get that, it's going to a tough night for whoever is guarding me."

The Kings are now 2-1 on their current five-game homestand.

"That was the kind of game we look for every night," Westphal said. "We did a great job taking care of the ball, we ended up doing a great job rebounding, and we moved the ball. ... It was the way we like Kings basketball to look."

Carl Landry, playing in his 13th game with Sacramento, scored 13 points and grabbed six rebounds. The third-year power forward has scored in double-figures in his last 14 games, including 13 with Sacramento.

Kings second-year forward Jason Thompson was off to a strong start this season, posting 17 double-doubles and starting in all of the Kings first 47 games. But after missing a pair of games to attend a funeral on the East Coast in early February, he moved back and forth in the starting lineup before being sidelined with a lower back injury for five games.

Since returning on March 7, Thompson has scored in double digits in three of the last four games. On Sunday night, Thompson scored 15 points and grabbed eight rebounds off the bench.

In three games versus Minnesota this season, Thompson is averaging 18.7 points and 9.7 rebound.

Minnesota's big man Kevin Love, who has averaged 17 points and 14 rebounds in two games against the Kings this season, missed his second consecutive game on Sunday night with a sprained left foot. Darko Milicic did not play due to flu-like symptoms.

Minnesota has now lost nine consecutive games and 15 of its last 16. The current streak is the second longest drought of the season. The club dropped 15 straight games in November.

The Timberwolves shot just 39.6 percent in the first half, a number that would have been far worse had it not been for the 8-for-12 shooting of forward Al Jefferson who finished the half with 18 points.

Leading 64-49 at the break, the Kings really blew the game open at the start of the third quarter with a 15-0 run, 11 of which were scored by Greene. The Timberwolves missed their first eight shots and didn't score until the 6:40 mark of the quarter. The Kings led 94-61 after three quarters.

Minnesota's Damien Wilkins connected on a half-court shot as the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter.
