OKLAHOMA CITY (NBA.com exclusive) -- Coming off a big win against the New Orleans Hornets on Wednesday and looking forward to a huge showdown game with the Utah Jazz on Sunday, some wondered if the Oklahoma City Thunder (40-24) would be paying attention when the New Jersey Nets (7-58) rolled into town Friday night.
For the first 11 minutes, the Thunder were fully engaged, jumping out to a 15-point lead. The rest of the game, though, was another story.
But in the NBA, it doesn't matter what you look like when you win, and Friday night in a soldout Ford Center the Thunder held on for a 104-102 victory.
"We got the win," said a relieved Thunder coach Scott Brooks, "It's not easy to win in this league no matter who you're playing. New Jersey played hard and competed. We gave them opportunities to get hot but we got the win and we move on."
It's something Nets coach Kiki Vandeweghe has seen a lot of lately, his team playing good enough to win, just not quite getting it done.
"We have had seven or eight games in a row where we've played playoff type teams. We are right there, right there with those teams. I thought our bench tonight was terrific."
So good in fact the Nets' bench outscored their starters 53-49.
"They kept us in the game when we were struggling a little bit."
Thunder forwards and best buddies Kevin Durant and Jeff Green kept the Thunder in front most of the night. Durant contributed a double-double with 32 points and 12 rebounds. Green went off for a season-high 27 points on 11-for-16 shooting.
"I was being aggressive attacking the rim," Green said, "then when I hit a couple of threes they had to honor that."
"Tonight Jeff pressed it," said Durant, "and he was good. We fed him the ball and he scored. He was unstoppable."
Durant surpassed 30 points for a franchise-best 36th time this season, passing Spencer Haywood's mark from the 1972-1973 season with Seattle.
Thunder point guard Russell Westbrook had a tough time getting started. He again flirted with a triple-double, just not the ideal kind -- finishing with 11 points, 10 rebounds and tying a career high with 9 turnovers.
"Russell did not have one of his better games. We'll look at the film together and figure out why," Brooks said.
Point guard Devin harris led the Nets with 19 points, Jarvis Hayes came off the bench to score 16, Keyon Dooling had 15 and Brook Lopez and Terrence Williams each added 14.
Thunder center Nenad Krstic had 10, while his backup Nick Collison dropped in 10 and grabbed nine rebounds. The Thunder missed rookie shooting guard James Harden, who is out 2-4 weeks with a strained hamstring.
"James gives us that scoring punch on the second unit," said Brooks, "It's unfortunate he got hurt but other guys will step up. Jeff gave us the start we needed."
In the early going, the Thunder threatened to run the Nets right out of the Ford Center, jumping out to a 31-16 lead in the first. But the Nets refused to go away, pulling to within five points at 41-36 halfway through the second.
The Thunder built a 16-point lead in the third, but everytime the lead grew, OKC seemed to relax.
"We did a great job of playing defense in the first half," said Durant. "But in the second half not so much. We kinda got relaxed which we just can't do."
"We can't relax like we did tonight," Green agreed. "If you give a team confidence then they can hit shots. We have to stay focused."
It was a fourth-quarter series that seemed to wake up the Thunder and the crowd. After Hayes brought the Nets within eight at 86-78, the Thunder reeled off seven straight. Durant started it with a steal and slam, then the OKC defense forced New Jersey into a shot-clock violation. Serge Ibaka followed with a basket and Durant added a 3-pointer to make it 93-78.
"Everybody keeps asking us about looking ahead to next year," Nets center Brook Lopez said. "I'm not ready to do that. I'm trying to help us get as many wins as we can."
The Nets came close, outscoring the Thunder 31-22 in the fourth. Two straight treys from Hayes melted a 10-point OKC lead down to four in the closing minute. But Durant and Westbrook hit four free throws to seal the game.
It wasn't pretty but it didn't have to be.
"A win's a win," said Brooks. "There's a fine line in this league between winning and losing. We made careless mistakes at the end, we can't afford to do that. So we'll work on it in practice and get ready for Utah Sunday night."
