Mavericks-Bulls Preview

The Chicago Bulls can point to a banged-up roster as one reason they've lost three straight, but a growing injured list has yet to derail the NBA's hottest team.

The Dallas Mavericks already have three road wins against Eastern Conference playoff contenders during their 10-game winning streak, and they'll look for a fourth as they visit the struggling Bulls on Saturday night.

Although guard Jason Terry was beginning a two-week recovery from facial surgery and newly acquired center Brendan Haywood missed the final three quarters of Friday's game against Sacramento due to back issues, Dallas still extended its longest winning streak of the season with a 108-100 victory.

The Mavericks (42-21) benefited from an unsurprising 31-point, 12-rebound effort by Dirk Nowitzki, but were also buoyed by a career-high 22 points off the bench from rookie Roddy Beaubois.

"Roddy did a great job for us being that energy plug that (Terry) usually is and hitting some big shots," Nowitzki said of the Guadeloupe native.

None of Dallas' wins during its run have come by more than 10 points, and its last eight have come by single digits, but despite the lack of blowout victories, the Mavs have put together their longest winning streak since they won 17 in a row from Jan. 27-March 11, 2007.

They trailed the Kings by double digits in the first half but took the lead for good by outscoring Sacramento 33-19 during the third quarter.

"When you're on a streak like this, everybody's gunning for you, everybody wants to be the team to take you down," said Dallas coach Rick Carlisle, who was ejected in the second quarter. "So you're going to get everybody's best game. We've had some slow starts, but it's something we've been able to overcome many times."

The Mavs have already beaten Orlando, Atlanta and Charlotte on the road during the streak, improving to 11-3 at East venues this season.

They are also missing center Erick Dampier and forward Tim Thomas, and they could be somewhat thin in the middle if Haywood cannot return Saturday.

But the Bulls (31-30) have also had a difficult time inside without top rebounder Joakim Noah, who is dealing with plantar fasciitis. Noah has missed each of Chicago's three straight losses, with the Bulls getting outrebounded by a combined 109-68 in the last two.

"We have to get bodies on people and be more physical," Bulls coach Vinny Del Negro said after a 105-96 home loss to Memphis on Thursday. "You have to control the tempo of the game and get more baskets. Everyone has to be more physical and get more loose balls."

As one of five teams jockeying for the final four playoff spots in the East, the Bulls can't afford a continued slip. A turnaround may be difficult with top scorers Derrick Rose and Luol Deng playing through sore knees and Chicago's next seven games against teams currently at or over .500.

"It's not time to panic," Deng said. "We've got 21 games left. We've got to play with a lot more energy than (Thursday), especially in the second half."

The Bulls' challenging stretch includes two games against the Mavericks, with the team traveling to Dallas on March 17.

While the Bulls have dropped 18 of 21 to Dallas since Michael Jordan's departure, Chicago gave the Mavs trouble last season, beating them 98-91 at home on Nov. 13, 2008.

Nowitzki was held to 12 points in that game, but he bounced back with a 44-point effort in the Mavs' 115-114 overtime win in Dallas on Feb. 7, 2009.

Mavs extend win streak to 11, hand Bulls 4th straight loss

CHICAGO (NBA.com exclusive) -- The best efforts of a struggling Chicago Bulls team were not enough to stop the charging Dallas Mavericks Saturday.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 27 points, 13 in the fourth quarter, and Caron Butler and rookie Rodrigue Beaubois each had 24 points as the Mavericks won their 11th straight game 122-116 over the host Bulls. The Mavericks shot 56 percent for the game (49 of 87), committed just six turnovers and made 11 of 27 3-pointers to extend their impressive streak.

The Bulls, who have been losing since center Joakim Noah was set down to repair his plantar fasciitis, shot 52 percent (47 for 90), outrebounded the Mavericks 37-33, turned the ball over just eight times themselves, and stayed in the game despite trailing from the end of the first quarter on.

There was a lot to like in the game, which saw the Mavericks make important shots from start to finish and the Bulls refuse to fold to a visibly better, more veteran, team.

"Chicago was a motivated team,'' Dallas coach Rick Carlisle said. "We knew coming in we were going to have to be opportunistic and efficient. We stepped into 3s when we needed to and got into the paint and made some good things happen."

Bulls guard Derrick Rose, the team's first all-star since Michael Jordan left in 1998, scored 34 points on 15-for-22 shooting, handed out eight assists and matched Nowitzki with 13 points in the fourth quarter. The Bulls had five other players in double figures and forward Taj Gibson had a double-double with 10 points and 11 rebounds.

Beaubois, from the French outpost of Guadeloupe, made 10 of 17 shots and scored 18 points in the third quarter to get his season-high 24 points in his 14th start of the season.

"He gave us a big lift,'' Carlisle said. "A couple of those shots were timely shots because [the Bulls] were making runs. He has had a couple of high-impact games for us and we are going to need that with Jason Terry out."

"They push me to just play, just play, [the shots] kept going in, so I kept pushing,'' Beaubois said.

The Mavericks (43-21) led by as many as 14 points, with a 94-80 lead after three quarters, but the Bulls got a pair of 3-pointers from backup guard Jannero Pargo to pull within four points, 98-94, with 7:59 remaining.

But Nowitzki made a 14-foot fadeaway jumper, stole the ball from Bulls center Brad Miller that led to a 3-point basket by Butler and the lead was once again nine points.

In the game's final three minutes, the Bulls got the lead down to six points only to see Dallas get key baskets from Marion and Butler. With Dallas leading 119-113 with 1:19 left, Nowitzki finally missed a shot but the long rebound ended up in Butler's hands and he converted it into a layup and another momentum turn.

Pargo made his third 3-pointer of the quarter to cut the difference to five points, 121-116, with 46 seconds left but the Bulls couldn't make any more headway.

"We gave it our all, but Dallas is a very good team," Rose said. "The team needs to find ways to win games."

"We cut the lead down but couldn't get the stop,'' said forward Loul Deng.

The Bulls starters, minus Noah, stayed with the Dallas starters, minus injured Brendan Haywood, through the first quarter. The scored was tied 20-20 at the 2:45 mark when both teams first accessed their bench.

The game turned in Dallas' favor in the final minute of the first half. With the Mavericks leading 62-55, Bulls center Brad Miller got sent to the floor with a stuff block by the six-foot Beaubois that Dallas turned into two points at the other end on a shot by Beaubois with 28 seconds left in the half.

The Bulls wanted to get that basket back in a hurry but turned the ball over with a bad pass by Rose. Nowitzki had little trouble working Miller from the free-throw line down to the basket for another quick two and a 66-55 Dallas halftime advantage.

The Mavericks, who take their streak to Minnesota for a game Monday, got 15 assists and 1 rebounds from Jason Kidd and 11 points from backup forward Eduardo Najera.

"We are a motion team that has one of the great all-time point guards running the show,' Carlisle said. "Everything starts on this team with Kidd and Nowitzki."

"I think we are loaded,'' Kidd said. "We have guys who know how to put the ball in the basket and we all enjoy sharing the ball and being a part of a play that is successful."

The Bulls have lost four straight since Noah played too long on his sore foot to help the Bulls beat Portland back on Feb. 26, and their playoff fortunes are sliding along with their record (31-31). They face Utah at the United Center Tuesday.

"I don't believe our confidence is taking a hit,'' Bulls guard Kirk Hinrich said. "We know what we are capable of doing. We have to stay positive and just play."

"We have 20 games left and need to get wins,'' Deng said. "We can't get down because it will make the situation worse."
