Thunder-Nuggets Preview

After coming up empty in a pair of road games, the Denver Nuggets are probably looking forward to staying at home for a few days.

Awaiting them in their return, however, will be one of the NBA's hottest teams.

The Nuggets will try to avoid matching their longest losing streak of the season Wednesday night against the Oklahoma City Thunder, winners of 12 of 14.

During a two-game trip to face the Los Angeles Lakers and Phoenix, Denver (39-21) suffered consecutive defeats for the first time since dropping three straight from Dec. 25-28. After falling 95-89 to the Western Conference-leading Lakers, the Nuggets lost 101-85 to the Suns on Monday night.

The Nuggets built a nine-point lead after one quarter but couldn't recover after getting outscored 33-11 over the next 12 minutes, recording their lowest point total for any quarter this season. Star forward Carmelo Anthony missed 14 of 21 shots overall and finished with 17 points for his lowest output since Dec. 27.

"We're not happy now but a week from now, hopefully after we win a few home games, we will be happy,'' coach George Karl said.

Winning the opener of their three-game homestand would probably make Karl very happy considering how his team performed in its previous meeting with the Thunder (36-23) on Jan. 29.

The Nuggets shot 40.3 percent while getting blown out 101-84, and the Thunder connected at a 51.9 percent clip as they snapped a five-game slide in the series. Kevin Durant scored 30 points and shot 12 for 19.

That was the first of 12 wins in a stretch of 14 games for Oklahoma City, which continued the surge with a 113-107 victory over Sacramento on Tuesday night.

Durant once again led Oklahoma City with 39 points, the 32nd time in 33 games he's had at least 25. The All-Star forward has also scored at least 30 points in his last six meetings with Denver, averaging 32.3.

However, Durant wasn't completely pleased with the Thunder's performance against the Kings after they allowed an opponent to reach the century mark for only the sixth time in 21 games.

"We're satisfied with the win. Of course, we didn't play the way we wanted to, but you're going to have games like that,'' Durant said. "I think that we did a better job of responding to that and coming out and scoring points and getting everybody involved, and we got stops when we needed them."

The Thunder, winners of five of six on the road, haven't won in Denver since relocating to Oklahoma City from Seattle. The franchise has dropped five straight at the Pepsi Center since March 28, 2007, including a 102-93 defeat Dec. 14.

Anthony scored 31 points in that win and has averaged 30.8 points in the last six matchups with the Thunder, but an ankle injury kept him out of the loss in Oklahoma City in January.

The Nuggets bench could be a little thin in Wednesday's game with reserves Chris Andersen (chronic patella tendinitis) and Ty Lawson (sprained left thumb) dealing with injuries.

Anthony, Nuggets storm past sluggish Thunder

DENVER (NBA.com exclusive) -- Thunder coach Scott Brooks isn't ready to talk about the playoffs. Even though his team won 12 of 14 and vaulted into the sixth spot in the Western Conference, Brooks was avoiding the subject.

"I know one day we're going to have to start talking about that if we continue to play at this clip," he said before Wednesday's game against Denver.

Brooks still wasn't in a mood to talk about the playoffs after the Nuggets thrashed Oklahoma City 119-90 on Wednesday night. Denver, coming off two straight losses, completely dominated the Thunder, leading by as many as 40 and sitting its starters for most of the fourth quarter.

"We've been focusing so much and playing harder than we did tonight," Thunder forward Kevin Durant said. "It's a minor setback. It happens, but we don't want it to happen this time of the year."

With the Thunder playing well and the Nuggets fighting for a high seed in the playoffs, the game held a lot of importance. The highlight of the night was supposed to be Durant facing Carmelo Anthony, but Anthony dominated that matchup, outscoring him 30-19.

Like most of his teammates, Durant struggled from the field, going 5-for-12. He failed to score at least 20 points in a game for the first time since Dec. 19 -- a span of 34 games.

"We came out with an aggressive mindset on the defensive end," Nuggets forward Kenyon Martin said. "We put two bodies on him and got him out of his comfort zone."

As the game wore on, most of the Thunder players looked out of their comfort zone. The starters shot a combined 13-for-43 and the team overall shot 32.5 percent from the field.

Meanwhile, the Nuggets were hovering around 50 percent all game and constantly building on their lead.

"It was one of those nights we didn't do anything right," Brooks said. "They were getting easy buckets, paint points. Carmelo got going, which he's capable of doing. We didn't play well."

The Nuggets led by nine at halftime and quickly got the lead to 16 in the first two minutes of the third. Durant's 3-pointer was the only bucket Oklahoma City had in the first 9:08 of the quarter, and fittingly, Eric Maynor's short floater at the third quarter buzzer rimmed out, adding an exclamation point to the Thunder's 4-for-23 shooting in the period.

Going against a team that has beaten Dallas, Atlanta and Portland of late, the Nuggets were surprised this one was a laugher.

"We didn't expect to beat them like that," Anthony said.

Anthony almost didn't suit up for this one. He said he has been feeling drained for two weeks and has dropped weight, although he wouldn't say how much. He was given fluids through an IV after Wednesday's morning shootaround.

"After that Cleveland game I wasn't feeling right," he said. "My body wasn't right, my energy wasn't right, and it took me a week and a half to figure out I was dehydrated."

Now that he has his energy back the Nuggets are ready to make a push for a top-two seed in the Western Conference. They're a half-game behind Dallas for second in the conference and 6 ½ games behind the Lakers for first, but they needed a win to shake off recent losses to Los Angeles and Phoenix.

"It's a confidence booster for us," Anthony said. "OKC is a playoff team right now. For us to go out there and do what we did tonight boosts our confidence."

The Thunder are in the thick of the playoff race but they know they can't afford too many nights like Wednesday. Brooks said he knows getting routed by Denver won't mess with his team's psyche.

"Some teams, yes you can worry about that, but our team has an incredible knack for bouncing back," he said. "I have a lot of confidence in our guys. One game I'm not going to lose all the things I believe in them."

Durant feels the same way.

"We're a team that bounces back well and shows a lot of resiliency," he said. "It's one of those wake-up games that happens throughout the year."
