DALLAS (NBA.com exclusive) -- The head coach of the NBA's hottest team didn't need a reminder of how rare and how fragile a lengthy winning streak can be.
Rick Carlisle got one anyway Wednesday. His Mavericks got all they could handle from the struggling Timberwolves before eking out a 112-109 victory and extending the league's longest winning streak to nine games.
"When you're in a winning streak, you've got to ride it," Carlisle said before the game. "You've got to keep doing what you're doing and roll with it because they don't happen that often in this league. It's a tough league and there's a lot of parity."
Minnesota nearly became the poster child for parity, putting a scare into a surging Dallas squad that trails only the Lakers in the Western Conference standings. The Timberwolves have lost four straight and 10 of their last 11. They've won only five times on the road all season and have dropped 14 of their last 15 meetings against the Mavericks. They were also playing without suspended center Al Jefferson, their leading scorer and rebounder.
Yet there they were, trailing by just one with 95 seconds left after a putback layup by Ronnie Brewer cut the Mavericks' once double-digit lead down to 107-106.
After Brewer's bucket, Dirk Nowitzki converted two free throws with 1:15 remaining. Nowitzki, playing in his 900th game as a Maverick, is shooting a gaudy 96.4 percent (132-for-137) from the line in the fourth quarter and overtime this season.
Minnesota missed its next three shots and Caron Butler stretched the Dallas lead to 111-106 with two free throws with 9.6 seconds left.
"We played hard tonight," Brewer said. "We gave ourselves a chance to win, but we had some tough breaks at the end."
Minnesota's unlikely upset bid was fueled by a decisive rebounding advantage (49-30), including 16 offensive rebounds and 22 second-chance points. The Timberwolves shot 53 percent for the game and had a 19-7 edge in fastbreak points, but were ultimately doomed by too many errors as Dallas racked up 29 points off 22 turnovers.
"We made some silly mistakes, which has been the hallmark of our team the entire year," head coach Kurt Rambis said.
Brewer led the short-handed Timberwolves with 24 points. Jonny Flynn added 19 points and Kevin Love posted a double-double with 14 points and 14 rebounds off the bench.
Jefferson began serving a team-issued two-game suspension without pay, stemming from his arrest Sunday on suspicion of DWI. He had played in 50 straight games since sitting out against the Mavericks and Grizzlies on Nov. 13-14 for family reasons. Minnesota also made the trip without Wayne Ellington and Nathan Jawai, who both have sprained ankles.
Dallas played without point guard Jason Kidd, given the night off after a busy stretch of nine games in 14 days. The 10-time All-Star had his most productive month in February, averaging 13.6 points, 9.6 assists and 6.2 rebounds in 13 contests. He shot 45 percent from 3-point range with four double-doubles and one triple-double last month, but also averaged nearly 37 minutes per game.
Kidd, who turns 37 on March 23, had seven turnovers against the Hornets on Sunday and shot 1-for-9 against the Bobcats on Monday.
"He's perfectly healthy and we want to keep it that way," Carlisle said. "It's the right time to do it. It has nothing to do with any disrespect for the opponent."
Sixth man Jason Terry was 5-for-8 from 3-point distance and led the Mavericks with 26 points. He was briefly knocked out of the game in the third quarter after getting smashed in the nose by Brewer's elbow. He returned to score seven points in the fourth quarter, but team officials said the injury would be further examined Thursday.
Nowitzki scored 16 of his 22 in the second half. Shawn Marion had 17 points, as did rookie Rodrigue Beaubois to match his season high. Dallas shot 50 percent from the field, 53 percent (9-for-17) behind the arc and went 17-for-18 at the free-throw line.
"They are a spunky team. They played until the end," Marion said. "We had them on their heels and we should have put them on their backs."
Dallas has won nine straight for the first time since March 16-30, 2007. The Mavericks have won a season-high six straight at home. They improved to 24-6 when scoring 100 or more points and 16-5 in games decided by five or fewer points.
